Re: The Love Thread (Or Just Warms and Fuzzies)

Thought you'd be used to that by now. Having trouble getting yer sea legs up and going?

Quick question though, is the rocking of the sea very noticeable on a large military vessel? I know how bad it can be on a sailboat, as I've spent a week on one once, but never spent any time on a military ship.
Heh... having "sea legs" just means you've gotten to where you rock against the boat, so to speak... makes it easier to navigate a passageway without running your head into a stretcher or firehose or shoring or whatnot. You get that after a day or two in rough seas. It's still extremely nice, though, when you get back ashore and you can actually walk on solid ground. The small details get you, like being able to shower in a real shower, or drive a car, or sleep in a real bed as opposed to a tiny rack.

Being able to see your girlfriend is pretty nice, too.

As for the rocking or smaller or larger vessels, Alias is right. The larger the ship, the less noticeable the rocking. Our vessel's over 150m long, so the rocking's not THAT bad unless we're in heavy seas (the truly gigantic vessels like an aircraft carrier have virtually no rocking).

Then again, the rocking also affects one differently depending on the circumstances. It helps me sleep at night, but I find it unsettling while I'm trying to eat. I don't mind walking through the ship in heavy seas, but running on a treadmill is a whole different beast when the ground moves unpredictably beneath you, so to speak.

Re: The Love Thread (Or Just Warms and Fuzzies)

You've had experience with military vessels?
Haha, no, but I'm a sailor. One of my uncles sails tallships and I've been on those, in addition to being a sailing instructor for the local water sports club for several years. [Ronny Edit: whoops, got you two confused there.] HopeYouGuess pretty much said it when he told you that the bigger the vessel, the less noticeable the rocking; that might have been obvious. But unless you've been on one, you might not know that the rocking is more pronounced near the bow of a ship - that's the part that is cutting through the waves, where the stern is sort of just dragged along.

By the way, if you're ever in a whaler or any other sort of flat-bottomed powerboat, NEVER sit in the bow when going full speed. I made that mistake once. Lungs felt like they were in my pelvis, and my ribs were bruised for the rest of the week. Seriously felt like I was going to suffocate just from not being able to get enough air, that's how hard I got the wind knocked out of me, haha.

I think it's about that time gentlemen.

In the navy!

Yes, you can sail the seven seas

In the navy!

Yes, you can put your mind at ease

In the navy!

Come on now, people, make a stand

In the navy! in the navy!

Can't you see we need a hand

In the navy!

Come on, protect the motherland

In the navy!

Come on and join your fellow man

In the navy!

Come on people, and make a stand

In the navy, in the navy, in the navy! (in the navy)

Have I sufficiently raped this conversation yet, or are we still talking about sailing and ships =D?

Did you actually think that was going to be funny, or did you just post Village People lyrics just to have something to say?

Do you not enjoy my sense of humour? Too linear for you?
Fair enough, but I found it funny at least.

I can't really comment on your sense of humor, since this is the first attempt of yours that I've been witness to. I will say that quoting that song to members of any navy is akin to calling a person with glasses "four-eyes" or making jokes about a person who's first name is Richard. You might find a person or even two who share the laugh with you, but the subject has heard the tired old jokes so many times that they've moved from rage to disdain and ambivalent scorn for the joke-tellers.

Maybe to you, but I still find a little chuckle in that joke,
if you find it distasteful I apologise, but unless there are several people who share your opinion, I can't really say that I regret posting it.

Distasteful? I said nothing of the kind. There are much better adjectives: puerile, thoughtless, unimaginative, familiar, old, pedestrian, unimpressive, trite, banal, uninspired, bland, worn-out... I'd go on, but I refuse to consult a thesaurus over this. Make no mistake, I'm not offended. I just thought it was stupid, and felt like picking on you for it. Nothing personal.

Oh, so it's old, then just say that.
Simple, Old joke is old.

I would have made it that simple, if I hadn't suddenly given heed to my vicious side.

Well I wasn't very offended, good for me I guess, and we've just flooded this thread with an irrelevant conversation about an old joke, and comments about it.
Do we get a prize?

Re: The Love Thread (Or Just Warms and Fuzzies)

I love giving people shit. I love prizes. I love jokes (just not that particular one). That means all my posts were completely on-topic.

I also love bullshitting sometimes. Not lies -- bullshit.

Speaking of which, I love most of the One Piece opening themes, so up-beat and awesome, listening to one can sometimes make my day.

Try looking in military bases, specifically ones with combat arms. Alistair is a soldier, trained from a young age to be a killer. I've noticed, through my experience, that folks with some of the most serious jobs in the world, tend to be the zaniest off work.
