Re: Random movie talky stuff.

So they aired James Cameron's Avatar for the first time on TV today. Watched it, enjoyed it even though I shouldn't. More than obvious Deus Ex Machina in the final act, predictable character deaths (typecast, anybody?), many scenes being effects moneyshot after effects moneyshot, and the message it sends to wheelchair-bound people is... questionable. At least worthy of discussion, in my opinion.

Of course you can have a fulfilled, happy life! All you need to do is trade in your crippled-ass body for a better one!
I think the only major motion picture that I've REALLY had a problem with (or maybe just the only one to come to mind), message-wise, is Big Daddy starring Adam Sandler. The message to would-be parents is... is...

Maybe... Adam Sandler can make terrible movies and still make lots of money? He teaches a young child that it's funny to throw sticks in front of people on rollerblades!

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Your problem is that you're looking for a message in Adam Sandler films.

Okay. That's... yeah, that's a pretty good point.

Still a bad movie, though...

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

It may not have been a focus, but it was certainly an important plot point. Hell, the first thing he does when he gets his blue body is take off running and laughing. The fact that he ends up abandoning his old, broken body for his new blue one that would in every way be superior even disregarding the usefulness of working limbs is just icing on the cake.

It's there, and you don't even have to look that hard.
So... after being without limbs (due to losing them in a war) for a set period of time, if you got them back you'd just shrug and go "Eh. No big deal. Not like I'm happy having limbs back or anything."

I think you're looking for something to be offensive here in all honesty. It seems like a fantasy come true for a lot of people who have missing limbs to be able to get them back somehow. So why should it be offensive for someone who is suddenly able to walk, run, sprint and so forth a bad message. It's not even a message really, it's almost a fact that someone who had their legs blown off would doubtlessly be quite happy to have them back.

Sly broke her ankle about a month back. She can barely move around the apartment as she waits for it to heal. When she does heal, she'll be running around cheering and hollering with joy that she can MOVE.

This isn't a message... it's a bit of characterization. Quite frankly, I would have cocked my eyes more at the movie if the man who had no legs suddenly got into a new body and went "NO! I want no legs again. Give me back my chair,".

I don't even care that hard, I'm just saying it's not hard to see if you want to look for it.

Obviously not. But it's not exactly a message being sent out to those without working legs as you claim it to be, which is the point I'm trying to get across.

Aye, but that was like the first 15, or may be 20 minutes of the film. After a while I almost forgot the guy was human to begin with.

Just the very beginning and the very end.

I'm not making the argument, that was Rule. And I'm sure no one is arguing that it's a message sent intentionally. I'm saying that with the evidence available the argument could be made, and even almost sensibly. There's also a very strong message of nature's superiority to technology, and an anti-colonialist message, and probably a load of other messages too. All life is connected. Something about faith and miracles. The problems greed can bring. So on and so forth. The only real opinion I have on the matter is that this probably wasn't written as a morality play, so whatever lesson you manage to pull is entirely your business. I am pretty sure Cameron couldn't care less.

okay wait. I thought we were having a fun time discussing the role of disabled people in the movie. I apologise if I sounded a bit harsh or smth like that. I love discussing stuff, and being in an extremely academic college where everyone around you is more than happy to jump headlong into a debate doesn't help.

Oh the anti-colonist stuff is pretty clear I think. Have you seen that comparison between pocahontas and Avatar?

It's virtually impossible to refute that. As for the nature bit, perhaps Cameron has been watching too many Miyazaki's lately. However, the ending makes no sense from a military standpoint. If you can't beat them on the ground, beat them from the air. If you can't beat them from the air... well, nuke them from the orbit.

Not like the mineral is going to evaporate or anything. The deposits are underground, so it's pretty safe.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

The fact that the native creatures won against mechs and machine guns in that movie amused me, though the numerous poor tactical choices on the part of the humans might be able to at least partially explain that.

I went to see Iron Sky last night. Much of the movie failed to amuse me, though that might not be entirely the fault of the movie, as it wasn't quite what I was expecting. There were some awesome moments in it, too. Like
Near the end of the movie, it is revealed that US wasn't the only one breaking the treaties banning space war ships. Actually, everyone was breaking it - except *drumroll* Finland!

I was expecting the entire movie to be similar to the scary movie series. Is the assumption wrong?

Btw, has anyone seen Battleship? I remember seeing the trailer for the first time (many months ago) and it was awesome in a stupid way.

I've only seen the first Scary Movie. There are similarities, but despite the over-the-top premise of Iron Sky, the movie itself isn't nearly as over the top with the jokes.

I checked IMDB and Battleship comes out on May the 18th noman. I think you're right about the trailer too, it looks like it may actually be pretty good considering.

Some regions releases movie way earlier than other countries. I know for sure that movies often get released a month earlier in Singapore than they do in UK. I was hoping that someone somewhere might have seen it already.

American made movies usually get released in the states first though.

Much more interesting if you don't read the description first. See if you can catch it by the end, and try not to look at the title, which also gives it away.

Battleship is one of the movies I'm interested in watching this summer. I had mixed reactions of "Seriously!?" and "This might be good" after watching the trailer.
