Funny how Titanic was the highest grossing before Avatar... and James Cameron did that one too...
Regardless, people seem to be drawn in by Avatar's visuals rather than its story.

It wasn't mediocre, it was just a classic. Essentially it was a scifi remix of dances with wolves (Or whatever one it was that dealt with native americans).

Yeah it's actually a very good story, and good visuals as well. My only problem with it was that it wasn't as original as I thought it would be. If I was expecting it to be Dances With Wolves in a different setting, I would have been perfectly happy with it. I can easily see how it's doing so well, other movies have done the same thing before for example Yojimbo and the Seven Samurai have been remade in different settings so many times it's not funny. In fact I think it shows how good the story actually is that it can be so easily transported to a completely different setting.

My biggest problem with the movie, though, is the navi. Everything else on the planet had four forelimbs coming from their shoulders and two hind limbs coming from their hips. For some reason, the navi were lacking one pair of forelimbs.
(The flying mountain bit is weird as well, but I guess that might could be explained as extreme magnetism, although that should have rendered electrical devices inoperable there.)

Did you see in in 3D Cloud? Because apparently that's where the special effects really stand out.
However, I don't think cinema is going downhill. I've recently got myself a copy of The Hurt Locker, and it was a brilliantly made movie. Though it didn't get nearly as much recognition or sales as Avatar, its up for as many Oscars.

Yeah doesn't seem to be going downhill, at least no faster than normal. Theres always going to be movies, music, games, what have you that you don't like. You don't like them don't watch them, maybe they'll stop making them that way if they don't make any money. Someone else I know said the Hurt Locker was good. Don't really want to watch it myself though.
