Hmm, I've been thinking over a particular concept I came up with earlier when drawing #2 that could work with the whole light/dark thing.

I could have the main character receive what other characters refer to as a "Halo" at the beginning of the game from a god like entity. Basically it's main function would be to prevent the main character from being overcome by whatever it is that's engulfing the world (darkness, corruption, etc), which causes people to lose their reason and give in to their desires, or be controlled. It would be some sort of accessory, such as a chain, amulet, or whatever.


It would also allow the main character to materialize a weapon and cast spells, meaning it would be the main character's only means of protection. The weapon would be able to change into different forms, such as the chain sword or a claymore once the particular ability is found. Elements could also be applied to the weapon, which would change the color of the glowing sections


There would then be a health and pleasure meter. If the player's health is depleted or if the pleasure meter gets too high, then the halo shatters, leaving the main character defenseless (as in game over, the player doesen't have control over the character anymore). The god like entity would warn the main character that giving into pleasure could cause it to shatter, and reward the player for avoiding sexual acts. A demon-like entity however, would tell the player that while giving into pleasure can cause the halo to shatter, keeping it near the breaking point constantly will cause the Halo to adapt to the darkness (or whatever), allowing the main character to control it.

Anyhow, there's one option. I'll come up with some alternatives.

Hm.. judging from that concept it would make sense if there would be a light and dark variety of weapons. The light ones can only be materialized when you are keeping your halo the dark ones materialize when the halo is shattered. Light could be a sword, a wand and staff that shoots light orbs, dark ones can be a scythe, chainsword and some kind of living greatsword(think soul calibur 3). If you'll have some kind of meter that shows how pure/corrupted you are, then you can make some weapons materialize when the meter reached some point in ether pure or corrupted side. Something like lv1, lv2, lv3 and max level weapons and maybe a neutral one. But that would require 9 weapons.

Oh crap, you just reminded me. I completely forgot, but this whole concept depends on whether or not the game is linear and level based or a metroidvania. And I'm assuming most people would much prefer a metroidvania..

...looks like I have to think this over some more..

Well my first catslevania was Symphony of the night, that art style, that story, that fun gameplay, that huge castle, but most of all THAT MUSIC! Pure. Audio. Orgasm. I mean I liked classic music before but this just made me fall in love. So I'm pretty much doomed to love every castlevania game or metroidvania type platformer. So go for a huge sandbox type world with little secrets and by secrets I don't mean breakable walls but maybe some chairs character can sit on, maybe a bed, a mirror, something a character could interact with or make some sexy poses. But I realize It's too early to talk about that yet, so I'm just spouting ideas.

Yeah. I love metroidvania's too. The only problem is how much planning they take if there's leveling up involved. Balancing is a bitch.

That being said, I there won't be stats or leveling up in this. That would complicate things quite a bit. There can still be weapon upgrades though, cause that's not nearly as difficult to manage.

Besides, Castlevoid is much better, but don't mind me, i'm bored...

LoS is a reboot which I didn't play since I lack consoles. But I loved LoI so I think I'm gonna like LoS too. As for 64's they are the first attempts at 3d so they are like the black sheep of the family, but I still think that I will like them, gonna play them someday. If only they created more 2d metroidvanias. But the last xbox live one makes me think that they will not make those anymore. Well at least OoE was good. Maybe we will see more once the 3ds is out.

Don't get me wrong, on it's own it's a pretty good game, but it doesn't feel like a Castlevania.

Funny how no one stood out for the poor Judgement(damn, sounds like a pun...).:(

Then again, don't mind me, i'm bored...

Ok, i'll stay updated on this since it seems like an interesting project :D

Also I think you are doing the right call in making smaller sprites since it improves rendering speed for slower computers. I noticed from my own game development experiences that it's kinda hard to hard code larger images that constantly updates and make it look good. I don't know if game maker have that kind of problem but for future reference in case you decide to go for some of the other languages later.

No, it seems most people seemed hated it as well. It's just that I'm one of the few who loved it, for whatever reason..-sigh-

@AMDKurt: And no, game maker doesn't have that problem. But of course, smaller sprites still mean a faster game. But that's not why I'm going with smaller sprites. (I'm going with smaller sprites cause I can make them much faster)

Also, I'm going to start doing some character animation now. No matter what the gameplay ends up becoming, I can still do running animations and whatnot.

Much like the younger generation of Castlevania games, I agree with keeping it simple. While it's a fairly fun thing to have, we can't have any fun at all if you're never able to even make it to begin with.

Maybe if you get into the groove of this kind of thing, perhaps?

There's a lot of ideas going around here, and I...I can't not like any of them really. Kyrieru, you have what seems to be good visual and design sense so far, and that combined with a willingness to try new ideas and experiment should result in a fun and playable, but also new and refreshing game. Will definitely be following this as I continue to...not work as hard as I should on Consuming Ocean. Wish you better luck than I'm having, but seeing your art, I know you're ahead of me there :V

I didn't stood out for it cause I didn't play it, the lack of the console thing.
But I really think a Castlevania fighting game should really be a bonus to the real game, but then again I could be wrong.
Funny how LoI came out before god of war and had everything it did except for the QTE. But the newest castlevania is still doomed to be compared to GoW rather then to LoI, which is just wrong. The LoI didn't feel like castlevania at first but then the music kicked in and all was well.
As for the 64's it's not about the graphics, but when you take a 2d gameplay and try to implement it in 3d and it just so happens that you are one of the first to do it, glitches and bad platforming are just bound to happen.

Pretty much everything but the faq and game list got unstickied.
I figure the admins got sick of scrolling down to read new posts, and it makes sense, if a game is popular, it will be bumped in any event, no need to sticky every game.

Actually RJ got on Dark's ass about making stickies even though our merciful lord isn't a mod/admin and therefore has no right to criticise the actions of a moderator of the hentai section.
