Re: Hounds Of The Blade

If it makes you feel any better, I gave you positive rep.

I've been using Windows since 3.1 and realized pretty quick that it is best to always skip over one OS. For example, 98 is better than 95, and XP blows Millennium out of the water, while 7 demolishes Vista. Based on my experience, if things continue to play out that way, whatever MS releases next will make Windows 8 look like a place holder. I'm not saying Windows 8 is trash, I'm just saying that MS has a rep of going good.. bad.. good.. bad.. good.
Oh man. Not the neg rep. Although to be fair, I got another negrep after that saying that it was because I had been rude. Which is weird, because I wasn't rude, and said nothing that could be construed as rude. People are just uh, you know, stupid. And before someone says "that's rude", yeah, I know it is. Eat shit.

I do appreciate your gesture, though. Thank you.

More on (off lol) topic, your sample size is too small to say that imo. Yeah, it has happened such that 98, XP, and 7 were great, but... meh with only 6 values, it could easily just be a fluke.

Yeah, but unlike taking 6 values out of a hundred, or even thousands, 6 values is almost half of the windows OS's -__-

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

Win 7 image viewer also struggles with BMP files over 3MB.
I take pictures of odd occurences while playing FO3, and can't view them because they're too f***ing big.
I could go and get Irfan, I guess.
I've open 12MB big BMP files without any problems, even in Windows XP.

Windows XP Pro (32bit) and Windows 7 Pro (64bit). Don't know if it could be a memory problem, cause I had 8GB RAM the last time I opened a BPM that large.

I just tested with an image that's only 5.6MiB large, but it started up instantly.

Not wanting to bicker too much here, but it's been relevant to the game considering how the topic gets brought up every single time the game gets an update, and how HotB hates Windows 8.

And how every time there's an update, someone new makes a post of how it somehow doesn't work for them because they have Win8.

Might as well cherrypick all the posts and delete half the thread if that's the case....

I guess is one of those discussions within a discussion that isn't going away anytime soon. Better to let people get it out of their system? (Ha...)

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

haha, I guess you're right, no wait you're fucking not.

Yes, it's giving the game problems and that'd be acceptable if that's what y'all were talking about, but it's not. There's a difference between the issues the game gets with an operating system and comparing operating systems entirely. This is NOT "Hounds of the hey, why can't we all just be on linux"

Talk about the game please, cuz it's pissing the people off who actually come here to talk about the game and check the thread for updates, and I'm getting complaints about it.

Anyone tried the Win10 test versions? Does that cause the same problems as with Win8?

Maybe it has a better compatibility mode but I would assume it probably does have the same problems and maybe a few more since you've also probably got problems with compatibility to drivers and game critical software and support files.

That being said, I doubt that the creator gives a shit about whether or not the game has problems with 8. Honestly, I wouldn't either lol

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

windows 8 tablets are actually quite popular in japan because they can play flash based games.

in any case, i have windows 8.1 and the game works fine as long as you disable all sound under playback devices and re-enable them once you hit new game or load game.

it's been stated countless times before and yet someone always turn it into an os war.

please make the first post mention this trick or else this will continue on and on and on.

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

If anyone is interested I've an small launch app that has an workaround for Windows 8, it basically does the following:

- Disable Windows Audio
- Start HOTB
- Wait 30s and enable Windows Audio again
- Close launcher

/ UPDATE

Maybe the thread starter or HOTB dev wants to include it but decided to just upload it to Mega so everyone can choose to use it or not, source code is included and requires .NET framework 2.0 which is already included in Windows 8:

mega.co.nz/

#F!RYZzDJAC!BlKuJYjA_t7_JFDI57nsrg

^^ not allowed to post URLs yet so combine the above two parts to make the url complete ;) ,the launcher might require elevated rights (i.e. run as admin) if UAC is set too strict as it needs to restart the Windows Audio service.

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

All you need to do to get this working on Windows 8 or 8.1 is to replace the dmsynth.dll in your system32 folder (or if using a 64 bit OS then put it in the SysWOW64 folder) with a dmsynth.dll from windows 7, this sorts the issue out! I've copied my own working version from my install directory, you may have to jump through some security hoops to get it to swap but that's it!

You don't need to "deactivate the sound" or "run a program" to get this game to work, can someone link this to the first post, its the 3rd time I've explained this! Thank you

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

Understand that but replacing system files isn't something I would recommend, even though with the launcher you will still get the performance hit of the crappy Windows 8.* DirectSound implementation it's better than modifying files that might cause other problems.
Currently trying to expand the launcher to hook the dmsynth.dll into the HOTB exe so that it won't have to replace the Windows build-in one but having no luck so far.

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

I've had no issues at all for a year and its even fixed some older games that had a similar issue with sound, if people back up their old dmsynth.dll and run into issues they can just replace it with their old one.

Re: Hounds Of The Blade

Thanks, it's a valid solution but hope it can be done easier so that we don't need to fix it manually :)
Playing around with Game Maker 10 which supports Windows 8 but requires a lot of changes in the HOTB scripts as that is in version 8.0 so doubt that would work as the developer would need to use it as well, otherwise on every new release I would have to do it all over again.

Found an easier way to patch the game by using FMOD for the audio engine, minimal patching and looks promising:

Since I dont have any version of windows 8 (I could use a VM tho) installed, but knowing how to fix old DirectX problems, has anyone tried installing any older DirectX packages? Like 9 or older? I haven't read into the thread properly (155x20 pages is alot :p)

Don't do this.

You should be able to just plonk the dll file in the same folder as the HOTB exe file, most exes will look for the dll file in the exe folder before looking in the system folders.

That's is good to hear :D , liking the Win 10 preview so far and if they don't screw up this might be best alternative to Windows 7.

Sadly doesn't work, looked at the Game Maker forums and only other solution is replacing the audio engine or upgrading HOTB to the Game Maker Studio version which supports Windows 8.

Both of those take a lot of time and tweaking, the audio engine looked easy enough but is giving the same performance issues.

That's wierd, that usually fixes alot of DLL related problems. But then I havent tried it on Win8.x
