Re: Scale Garden's ~ Sangeki of Gear [RJ080939] Full English Translation
With how RPG Maker files work, you probably would have to. Unless there's some program out there that takes two files, notes the differences, and makes a patch file out of it
Or you could just upload the data files and overwrite the oldest versions, that way only maps that have been modified (i.e. have new translated bits) will be placed in.
Ok so, I wasn't really planning on saying it but most of you have figured it out, I translated this, I didn't really plan on it but I just got swept up and ended up doing it.
As for why Twisted's version looks more natural, that's because, essentially, it is, originally this game was in 1st person, but I made a major fuck up and did it in 3rd person and didn't notice until I was about 5 or 6 hours into the translation so there was no way I was going back and doing it all again. This game is gargantuan, I wish I could say I was exaggerating here but it's probably bigger than Virgin Island which was the biggest one I've done to date before this. That being said, the language in the game is VERY clinical no matter if it's done in 1st or 3rd person, simply because of how the language works.
Another thing people have pointed out is that I'm using machine translations, I've had people ask me why I bother doing that, the truth is even if a native Japanese speaker was to translate it to English, it would still look a bit unusual. There's so many more sounds and descriptive words in Japanese than there is in English so most of them have to be improvised simply because if you write them down in English they just look odd. Basically machine translations that have been cleaned up and modified slightly are the best you're going to get.
That being said, I don't just use the one, I have about 2 or 3 custom dictionaries, 4 translation sites working in tandem etc, so calling it a machine translation isn't exactly doing it justice, that would imply I just straight copy and pasted the text, most translators I know agree with me when they say the hardest part isn't translating it, it's making the stuff that a machine translation throws at you make sense.
Any way, that's my two cents on the whole thing, sorry Twisted for ninja'ing you on this, I didn't actually know you were working on it. Had I known, I would have said something about it :L
