Re: Renfield

Browsing H-shop sites reminds me why I started this project.
So much porn. So much of it the same. So much of it unremarkable.

Not sure if the market is just stale and out of ideas, or if I'm just getting pickier over time.
It's not just you. Too many vanilla, hunt-for-the-still-image-CG games.

Happens to every entertainment industry, though. People don't want to go outside the box, they want a "sure thing", something guaranteed to make money.

Re: Renfield

When's the demo going to be released?

What's the object of the game. Story wise. Or is there no story to it?

Soon.
I could release an application that just lets you walk the map right now.
But there isn't anything to do at the moment.
Each system is being developed independently and will be integrated into the game one piece at a time.

There's a story, but you can ignore it and just wander around.
To beat the main quest, you need to sacrifice 5 people of a certain bloodline as part of a ritual to keep an ancient evil asleep.
Pretty standard stuff.
Come to think of it, it's basically the plot of Cabin in the Woods.

Re: Renfield

Your character will have a Smithing stat.
At first it will just be for upgrading weapons.
Eventually I'll introduce crafting and repairing.

Screenshot is from Dark Souls with a shader mod.

The early alpha demos will mostly be about testing mechanics.
I want to make sure the combat and exploration are balanced and enjoyable.

Re: Renfield

As much as I'm borrowing from the Elder Scrolls series, I'm not going to copy their level up system.

The Fallout series has a much more sensible method for awarding experience and leveling up.
You actually get rewards for kills, quests and skill checks instead of standing still letting a wolf bite you to level your Armor Class.
Renfield will have a compromise between these 2 systems.
Skills can be leveled with use, but they aren't the determining factor in your character level.

Re: Renfield

If anyone is interesting in featuring their content in the game, don't hesitate to come forward.
Since I'm funding the game out of my own pocket there may not be much money in it for you.
But it could be a good way to get a visible portfolio of work.
(Although since the game has dark & sexual themes that could actually backfire)

I personally think it's strange to acquire exp in any way you feel like, and then you're able to level any skills you want at level up. Run around for half an hour exclusively smashing enemies to death with a hammer, and then you put all your points into science or magic or whatever, lol. Clubbing enemies to death makes you smarts. It's something that takes me out of a lot of rpgs immersion wise, temporarily anyways.

It's done so often over a more realistic approach to learning/improving, makes me sad. Not like it ruins a game for me, but eh.

I think a balance is best.
One way of doing it will throw your immersion under the bus.
Another way will throw the game mechanics under the bus.

Somehow I need to find a system that lets you gain proficiency through use
while also giving you some points each level to spec more deliberately.
All without the character becoming too powerful too quickly.

Re: Renfield

We won't do the leveled enemies thing like in Elder Scrolls.
In Renfield, the further away you travel from your starting point, the tougher enemies get.
It will be relatively gradual.

The other thing we won't do is use these leveled zones like in an MMO or in the Witcher 3.
(You are in a 1-10 zone. Take the left path to go to a 11-20 zone. Take the right path to go to a 41-50 zone.)

You could do something like fable where you gain a certain type of experience for doing something like striking someone with a weapon and also gain some general experience that can be used to advance anything from killing enemies/crafting things/whatever.

Re: Renfield

Just finished a list of over 700 enemies and their stats.
Many of them are reskins/variations as you'd expect.
But there will be about 120 unique base models.

Re: Renfield

Working on dialogue is a pain the ass.
I've never been much of a writer.
But writing the English and Japanese translations is tiresome.
After playing JRPGs in their original language I can read Japanese just fine.
But translating English idiom into Japanese is tricky at times.

Re: Renfield

Watching footage of older RPGs is always encouraging.

They are a reminder that a simple game with solid gameplay
can be more enjoyable than many modern AAA cutscene-a-thons.

Re: Renfield

The playable pre-alpha will be out any day now.

I'm looking for feedback on the map, controls and interface.
As always, questions or suggestions on any aspect of the game are welcome.

Ah yes, Dragon Quest (or Warrior as it was known here back in the day) 3. My favorite of the series actually (always liked games where you could build a party). And I couldn't agree more. With a very few exceptions, I'm just as happy playing something like that as I would be playing a modern "AAA" title. And there is the nostalgia, I grew up playing NES games.

And if I can (see below), I will try that demo and give you some feedback. From the point of view of someone who has been playing games since the 1980s. ;)

What I mean by "if I can" :
