Re: [10/28] *Updated* Comprehensive patreon list

That merely depends on the artist you are going to hire.
professionally, drafts are approved first by you before the artists rendering to avoid a lot of revisions. failure to communicate will definitely bring problems.

you have to be clear of your expectations and the reality of what quality you like if you do ever pay for $20 commission. Still images are very much doable under that rate. (animating is another problem and an irrelevant issue as you're doing VN?)

I can't imagine any artist in this thread being interested in a collab with FSA since most of them already get $500 to $2500 (or more) on Patreon.
It would probably be easier for them to do their own thing and not deal with picky game designers (like myself).
You do have a point, and tho there are also artists out there looking for a programmer to collaborate with and most can even take on more than 2 jobs and still deliver on time... I do understand your fears. I'm sure you've heard nightmare stories. and they are very true, specially dealing with people you never knew.

Btw there are sites like elance that cover the security of both parties. You could also use something like that. Some of the adult stuff I did were from sites like those.

Re: [10/28] *Updated* Comprehensive patreon list

If you create a good game without art, there is a possibility someone will play the game, enjoy it, and perhaps join your project to do the art. Honestly, I'm surprised Sierra Lee has not had an artist come forward with Last Sovereign, given how popular it is.
I do want to say that I'm very grateful for the battler and pixel artists that have come forward to help with things! Dedicated and professional project artists are worth their weight in gold, so I doubt I'm big enough to attract one yet. But I don't say that to discourage you, Paladox - connections and hitting the right niche matter a lot.

I really wish that some artists would make and sell hentai art packs for commercial use. Kinda like the art packs that are available for RPG Maker.
I know that Cypress (Overwhored) and Nomoshing (Harem Collector) have floated the idea of creators pulling together to commission a hentai pack. I doubt it would have custom characters, but it would probably include a lot of helpful bases and background stuff that NSFW projects need. You might want to keep an eye on them, in any case. As our community grows, hopefully this kind of thing will start appearing.

I would prefer to purchase some commission work (maybe I can luck out on Deviant Art, but most close up shop VERY fast!).
I wouldn't mind paying $10 to $20 (or more, depending) per commission, but the emulation of 70+ frames from VH could be a problem.
For whatever it's worth, I'd advise you look for artists in places more specific than Deviant Art. The various RPG Maker forums have professional artists who can do work specific to your project for less than you'd probably find a general artist. That's where I've gone for the custom characters and edits I have, anyway, and I've been happy with the results.

Re: [10/28] *Updated* Comprehensive patreon list

Thank you both for the suggestions and advice. I will definitely keep these things in mind. I will probably poke around a bit and check on some artists.
I really should focus less on this though and focus more on game development.
It's not like I can afford to pay an artist yet anyway. xD

I did see one that I really like a lot. The commission price was about $50 but that seems pretty fair, considering the quality.

If I got everything I wanted it would probably run me about $8000.
Hmm.. well if FSA becomes more successful on Patreon then I'll see about getting that a little at a time. xD

50 bucks per image?
That is quite a huge price. Normally, artists give discounts for bulk orders. specially for your case of having 70+ images made. Can I see the quality of the image if you mind not?

For a full sized CG? That is not a huge price. For a sprite maybe, but even most sprite sheets run in the $15-25 range. Honestly, for a high quality CG, $50 would be a steal, in my opinion.

I charge by the character and im not even especially good at drawing the same characters over and over consistently

I still need to see the quality that justifies that price.

i know contacts who could do it in less, in time and in the right quality.
before i became a programmer, i used to do commissions on art as well and 50 bucks can go a long way from the right people.

EXPENSIVE! to think it's just svg.
I had the idea that it was semi painted.
also, the prices are for NON-COMMERCIAL use. if you plan to make profits out of em, it's going to cost you more.

Without the non-commercial tag, it's still a bit pricey imho. and if you're going to request it for nsfw? it's probably gonna cost more.

Edit: Btw, delivery time is also going to be another factor in considering this. If he's blazing fast to deliver with that quality, by all means take it.

Ah, I hadn't noticed the fine print. I'll ask them about pricing for Patreon supported projects.

I would certainly rather pay smaller prices. Of course I can't afford anything currently but shopping around can't hurt anything. Only problem is if I find a
great deal on just the right type of art and then when I can finally afford it (months or even years later) they've decided to close up shop. xP

BTW what does "just svg" mean?

Edit: I'm asking them about how much more commercial pricing would be. Probably not going to like the answer.
If it's a 50% increase or higher then I think I will sadly have to seek art elsewhere. Surely it can't be that costly. xP

scalable vector graphics.
usually done by flash, illustrator or inkscape.
when the artist already have a library of body parts from those, it can be easily re-attached / modify to certain, yet workable limitations. compared to traditional drawing, where the artist has to do everything from scratch, vector graphics, I can just drag a body part prefab and modify it slightly.

had i not an ongoing project (also a patreon campaign coming out soon), i would have collaborated with you.
anyway, deviant art is good, and better if there are ways to know the reputation of the artist.
best of luck!

Hmm.. yeah I can see it now, especially after viewing the portraits from the Arena set of examples. Many of the men look like the same person, but at different stages in their life. The two women have the same facial features as well but just angled slightly different.

Not necessarily a bad thing though, if all the characters are related.

Thanks. I do like your work, especially the more recent ones. Good luck with your project and campaign as well. :)

Edit: I got a quote on full copyright buyout (I think that's what she called it) for commercial purposes and it was 3x the original pricing.
A little pricey, but far preferable to the alternative base cost + 10% collab.
Still, those prices might be OK for an established developer, but as an Indie I would rather do without.

I hope it's not considered rude to openly discuss pricing on forums. I think it's good to discuss it as it could help me out about getting better rates elsewhere. :)

Thanks for the compliment!

holy crap x3! That's already way overboard for reusable graphics.
I think discussing the price is fine. How else would you protect yourself from a possible ripoff?

I really would suggest a collaborative effort if you can find one. tho, sure the profit share can get as high as 40-50% but it's worth it having a partner artist around. you can make more games in the future anyway, so even with the big profit share, you still have something afterwards to start a new project with. again, best of luck!

Hey.

You put Incest Story twice.
Just to let you know.

Amazing stuff here, too bad most of the game I find very interesting has such low patrons.

I'm pretty sure It's not legal to use copyrighted material for commercial use. Atleast that's what I think.

I mean making money with someone elses work can't be legal right? You are technically not selling the game, instead you are asking for support (which still is asking for money).
This is why lets players who make a comfy living irk me

If you're still looking for new patreons, check this user: pat reon.com/user?u=384890 (sorry I can't post links :s)

He pledges to a lot of patreon but he has 0 "good" (the stuff in the upper right corner) so he probably never gives money.

In many instances it can be mutually beneficial. The players are giving the game maker free advertising (which is normally extremely costly for big businesses).
Actually there are game companies that send lets players free games. If you're going to be irked by the players then you might as well place half of it with the game company.

It annoys me more when someone takes something free, like the Fallout 4 trailers, previews, etc.. and then make money just from re-uploading it.
Should be illegal but whatever. At least some of them make an effort to break down the trailer, discuss it, etc..

I'm going to assume the placeholder assets that I'm using in FSA are why my patreon hasn't gotten a spot on your list. Fair enough I guess.

Except me and the others I know that watch lets plays off and on never touch the games they do a play through on. Like horror games for example, I just watch those. Never think about buying the game though.

I watched a couple campaigns like CoD only cause I like the story but not spending money for a majorly online experience.

I often do the same thing. Horror games and Telltale Games series have such little interactivity that it's difficult for me to justify a purchase.
I rarely finish watching them though. It's often just as much torture as it would be to play the game.

I can't blame the Lets Players for this. It's the games at fault and I wouldn't purchase them anyway (with or without watching an LP).
Unfortunately I did buy Jurassic Park for $1. I'd rather have the $1 back. xD
