Re: Games Discussion Thread

HAHAHA, dark damage is from faith based spells now, or at best a split between int and heavily favored faith. (I really can't remember anything other than THE GIANT BLACK BORDERS ON MY SCREEN from dark souls 2 though so maybe it was like that before)

Enjoy being staggered by every single attack unless you're in the very last part of your swing with a super-heavy weapon. I don't do PvP but apparently R1 spam with the rapier or estoc is the popular scrub method.

Traps are non-existent, they STILL haven't fixed the goddamn lock-on system and in fact there are a few enemies that exploit it's failings by moving upwards so quickly it breaks the lock (REALLY? I'm pretty sure there's no way I'm going to lose track of something that's 20ft tall while I'm fighting it!). The dumbass stat that's just there to limit your carry-weight is still around. OH and don't believe the in-game description of poise, it's a lie.

To be honest, I'm done giving fromsoft money. Poise was the last straw.

yea im a die hard souls fan, but after playing dark souls 3 at a friends house im not interested in buying it. finished the game but further pve dosent interest me, nor does pvp.

poor balancing in favor of the Japanese market ruined the game, as well as a general lack of story telling simply killed any interest in a second playthrough.l

Re: Games Discussion Thread

You know what? The guys on the Japanese forums are bitching that Fromsoft is pandering to the western market. Fromsoft is just playing us against each-other in attempt to keep the heat off from themselves.

maybe, but a lot of the things the Japanese market was vocal about, like not wanting poise, not wanting 1v1 pvp, those things made it into the game. there are plenty of other flaws in the game, but its the ones that were intentionally put there to make someone else happy that bother me most.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

So I was checking out War for the Overworld and saw that a few people here on the forums already have it. Is it worth the asking price? Reviews appear positive.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

If you loved the Dungeon Keeper games and are rabid for a third installment, definitely. If not, the originals are on GoG i believe, worth a shot to see if you like the series, and much cheaper.

I'm about halfway through the campaign myself, and it just bleeds nostalgia, I quite enjoy it. They even got the same voice actor to do the narration, it's great.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

For those who watch my streams; I'll be streaming on Thursday rather than on Friday this week.

Are you serious? Every time I play a souls game I play as a mage so now dark magic favors more to the faith stat? lol booo
They haven't fixed the locked system since dark souls 1 so I'm not surprised.
The popular raiper or estoc "poke your face" technique, I usually dodge and hit him with promancy or close range soul spells like "Soul Greatsword".

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Yeah, ultimately... I think I'm not as much into Dark Souls 3 as I was into 2. I played through it once and am now close to finishing NG+, but it doesn't grab me like DS2 did. Partly, I think the lack of variety in level design factors into this. Not only are you going castle to cathedral to castle, but they all LOOK largely the same. There's nothing that stands out as much as the Crystal Caves did in DS1 or the Iron Keep in DS2, with the exception of one late-game, optional area that I don't want to spoil here. Even launching people into the air with an Ultra Greatsword uppercut gets boring after a while. I didn't even stumble into anything new on NG+, with the exception of the +1 rings. It's still a great game though, and I don't regret the hours I've put into it. Just... a bit disappointed.

So, for a change of pace, I'm currently downloading DOOM. That just looks like pure, unadulterated fun.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I was playing Dead Island today and died 3 times in a row, losing at least $15,000. Ouch! It's going to take a while to make up for such a huge loss. I tabbed out and then forced the game to close, but I'm guessing that won't do away with any recent gameplay. xP

This reminded me of one of the problems I have with the Dead Island game, the increasing cost of weapons. I know the tougher enemies can "sometimes" drop thousands of dollars, but for the most part you're only getting up to $100 from the common enemies.

I'm thinking about starting over and picking the guns expert. I'm thinking she would get free bullets during her rage, but I could be mistaken. The blade expert isn't very good in rage mode because damage isn't reduce any (which makes it kinda pointless).

Pistols at dawn, sir or madam! I won't have you slander Saint's Row in my presence. Actually, Gat Out Of Hell IS pretty bad, but still. The humor and ridiculousness of IV is especially terrific if you know what you're getting into. True, they recycled the map, but the story is so balls-out INSANE that you won't even notice after a while. It's great, and I heartily recommend picking it up.

They did do pretty good, considering it was the same map (and same exact stores.. why so many SR stores?).

The boss fights in both games are kinda anticlimactic, leaving something to be desired. I guess this is to go along with the nonsense vibe that the games are going for. SR4 almost had the ridiculousness thing pegged 100%, but then along comes my character spouting profanities while everyone else is pretty much G rated. It was rather jarring and felt inconsistent.

Still, despite the games' shortcomings the open world experience is tons of fun. I do wish they had more customization options with clothing (let us mix and match a bit more, rather than so many 1 piece outfits. The add-on content (which thankfully was all complimentary) is even worse).

I'd be hard pressed to give full retail for one of these games (anything over $20), but they're definitely worth playing when they hit lower price points.
I'm not saying the games are bad, but they're certainly not perfect. I'd rate them about 7/10.

If you have an account with GameStop and you've been saving up points with their Power Up Rewards system, make sure you log into your online account and change your rewards preferences to stockpile before the 30th because a recent change in their system has defaulted all accounts to a $5 Reward Certificate option that will subtract 5000 rewards points from your account at the end of each month.

Here's the path to the setting
Account Details > Power Up Rewards > Manage Reward Preferences

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Ima try today a mod for sins of a solar empire rebellion, I hope it's a bit more than just a fresh paintjob...

Okay, I did play a couple games longest session was 3 hours:eek:. I must say I really like the 'halo' theme + the changes to the ships, what I scpecially like about the mod is that ships and stations/buildings are way easier to demolish than in the original game, makes for faster paced games.
Also the AI is quite challenging, just played vs a normal AI, but it's pretty damn hard to keep up with its expansion speed.:p

A mod that really convinced me was the for homeworld 2, the single player mode felt almost as if I was playing eve. ;)

Wrote another review review
For an old game this time. Almost as old as I am. (Just about half a year off!)

(Sid Meier's) Covert Action

Not going to paste it into a spoilered quote this time, because I've upped the professionalism and added shiny pictures. And you'd miss out on those.
Comments are welcome, of course

Re: Games Discussion Thread

So, I've played Digimon Cyber Sleuths and it is a fine game. Alright. Good for Digimon fans. But it is NOT an 8/10.

First off, several of the Digimon I wanted to see from the other games were there, such as the kendo Digimon from 3 aren't available.

Second, it is grindtastic and encourages leaving it on but unplayed by making the Digimon on the farm level up in realtime.

Third, there are really rough spots in the game. For example, I've encountered three situations where a status effect is named differently in different attacks, such as 'Dot' being called 'crystalized'.

Lastly, the boss battles are pretty boring and sometimes downright unfair. Usually it amounts to you keeping your HP up while watching the same animations over and over. Now, I know that sounds like a lot of games but it is somehow boring in this case. They also seem to try to make enemies 'bosses' by giving them ungodly amounts of Defense, Speed, and HP. I once spent thirty minutes trying to defeat one of the enemies before losing, getting a guy who could pierce defense, and winning in a minute. So you better keep a guy who has a defense-piercing attack or you could get screwed into a corner.

It's not bad but it isn't great.

I give it a 6.5/10 and this is from a loving Digimon fan. I'm still going to finish it, I'm close to the end, but I'm not going to bother with the New Game + unless they double the roster.

Damn. I guess I will get the other Digimon game instead.

Hey, don't let that dissuade you from the game. Cyber Sleuth is fun and as long as you're not trying to play as part of the metagame you'll have a blast playing it and enjoy the story. I say Cyber Sleuth is worth getting.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Well, I just read about the endings of Dark Souls 3 (MAJOR SPOILERS TO FOLLOW)
and I don't get why people think that the world ending is a surprise or something to be too depressed about. It's happened at the end of all three games: The First Flame is dying, that is happening no matter what. The previous two games could have extended it but it was only a stop gap measure.

The term End of an Age applies heavily here. Everything ends, everyone dies. Empires fall, fires burn out. There will be another age. Eventually a new fire may be found or created, causing a second Age of Light but the Age of Dark isn't exactly the worst thing that could happen. It's just a change. The cycle goes on.

fun fact, its not so much of a cycle of fire and dark, than it is a cycle of fire to fire. also there is a third ending to dark souls 3 which is the only different ending yet in the franchise, one that doesn't prolong the fire to fire cycle.

Haha, nice. Don't worry, it doesn't manage to do that this time around.

@HOZ: That implies that the Age of Dark is nothing more than a stage between the Ages of Light. But I think it is its own thing.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Small review
For a small game
Turmoil

Link with pictures
Getting right to it, Turmoil is a time-constrained pipe building optimisation puzzle game. Your main goal, and main problems will resolve around getting all the oil in a level out of the ground and sold within one year. It does what it does and it does it fairly well. The pipe building is intuitive(Simply drag the mouse to where you want it), and everything makes sense. Oil only flows as fast as the smallest pipe, thus you need to make sure you don't have a bottleneck in your system. And if you pump oil up faster than you can carry it away then you spill it, incurring a fine. The game explains mechanics well and there are enough upgrades and level varieties where it does not become a chore or too similar to other levels.

A solid foundation, improved upon by hazards such as rocks and natural gas which can be used for profit as well, with the right upgrades, or just by adding it to your regular oil pipes so the pressure brings the oil up faster. As before, you may spill some if you bring oil up too fast, so be careful about what you drill.
To further the gameplay there is a solid campaign that last just long enough to be a good experience without overstaying its welcome. You need to buy the upgrades, lease land you think has a good amount of oil in it, and compete with 3 AI players trying the same. Eventually leading to auctions for shares which allow you to win the campaign once you have a majority share. Even if you are not into optimising things, the base gameplay is well enough and the game forgiving enough that you can get away with a profit just drilling for oil, though you may have difficulty making large profit margins.

Turmoil is a simple but solid game, build on a good concept with good execution at a competitive price. If you're looking for a few days worth of entertainment, Turmoil is a good choice at a good price.
