Re: The technological answer to SOPA/PIPA.

I don't know how I missed this article, but read this:

Download Tribbler here:

This program is freaking awesome! I can't tell you how much of a bane this will be for the RIAA and MPAA. They, of course, will try to attack it SOMEHOW. Enjoy it while it lasts.
I dont know about posting links for it here... lets just get rid of them for now and you can go look it up yourself if your interested.

Re: In today's news...

How's that different from normal torrents?
Well, I happen to use a private tracker, but if you use a site like pirate bay they have trusted uploaders (or whatever they're called) so when they've commented on a torrent saying it's ok then you've got at least something to go on.

Not really.

1) Kazaa has always been owned by a company since early after its creation--making it an easy target.
2) The biggest source of malware complaints concerning Kazaa was the spyware and adware that were bundled with the client.
3) Downloading torrent files via Kazaa is no different than downloading torrent files via any other torrent software.
1) I really don't care about its viablity as a target, nor was I commenting on it.
2) This is foolish, most people didn't bother to complain about viruses they got using a peer to peer program (even if they fixed the virus or knew it was there or where it came from) when kazaa was in widespread use. That'd be like going to a party and making out with a bunch of people, then the next day going up to the host and saying "Your party gave me mono asshole".
3) See above reply to HS

Maybe I've become spoiled during my time using a private tracker, but honestly I haven't gotten a single file that wasn't exactly what the description said it was or any viruses. For me to go back to the virus-riddled ocean of fake files that decentralized downloading creates just seems silly.

Disturbing development concerning the future of HTML5:

The sad part is that Google is one of the three companies(next to Microsoft and Netflix) who are proposing adding DRM directly into the HTML5 standard.

Also, something cool from Ubuntu:

...and watch here:

This is sick!

Re: In today's news...

Really how much piracy is enabled via streaming? Sure some porn... basically that's it, you pull the porn off a website like xvideos and don't have to waste bandwidth/time to watch it again. Oh I forgot streaming tv shows, because you know, that's a large loss in profit there. So that leads me to believe they're either trying to distract these anti-piracy groups with the ruse that this will affect anything, or they're setting themselves up for some sort of giant winfall.

HAHAHA! They're trying to create a world in which all computers are the same! And by the same I mean, made exclusively by them for large amounts of profit.

It's not a large leap from them snubbing open-source on html5's DRM bullshit to just not allowing computers without it onto the internet, and next thing you know it will be illegal to own a computer that isn't directly controlled by microsoft/apple 24hrs a day, and I bet they'd even make you pay for that 'service'.

Re: In today's news...

TL;DW since the vid is 30min long: A new idea which aims to make the future world a better place.
A group with a few million (and rising) followers called Invisible Children Inc. are trying to make a currently unknown yet internationally top wanted criminal (Joseph Kony) famous to make people aware of his crimes against humanity and thus rally the interest of the people in charge to support the local troops in bringing him to justice.
For the past 26 years he has abducted about 66k children into his own stand-alone army as sex slaves and killers and forced 2 million people to abandon their homes in fear of being taken away. He is apparently also doing this "because God commanded him to".

Not sure if they couldn't have taken a better approach than immortalize him as a martyr though, the world will just have to wait and see what becomes of this I guess.

I hope they do catch him. People who can harm children need therapy or a cell...

On a different note. Employers are now demanding access to Facebook and other social sites despite privacy settings:

I think I just ruptured something. I imagine the moment when you're already in the middle of it and then see the eye. Only that you can't stop now, can you...

Er... you might want to skin until around 2 minutes in. Despite the video headline, there's about 2 minutes of stuff barely related to the headline before the story I'm trying to share >.>

Re: In today's news...

New gender equality rulings set to change car insurance prices. (UK/Europe. I don't know if other European countries already do this.)

"Despite jokes about women drivers, for years they have paid less for car insurance because they are statistically safer behind the wheel.

But this is all set to change later this year.

A ruling by the European Court of Justice that bans setting insurance prices according to gender is due to come into effect in December 2012.

The ECJ ruled that the long-established practice amounts to illegal discrimination."
My only hope upon hearing this, is that the insurance companies level their new prices propperly, and don't just take this as an opportunity to hike up womens prices to the current mens prices.

These are insurance companies we're talking about, of course they'll be hiking up women's prices to current men's prices.

It's a step for Gender Equality though... semi-good news in my eyes even if it means more money flowing out from women's pockets. If prices go down (highly unlikely) then it's a win for all.

That, and the European Court is known to be rather "employer-friendly". The execution of the policy changes are due 12/2012, however the decision dates back to 03/2011 (not making this today's news either). Maybe competition among insurance companies can prevent women's prices from rising. However I doubt that as well and I'm fairly certain that companies won't have to fear any consequences.

Also @ Unknown Squid : The gender-based pricing is due to differences in how often either males or females are involved in driving accidents, statistically speaking. As such, this policy is common in most European countries as far as I know, if not all of them.

Re: In today's news...

Edd Gould, the man behind Eddsworld, died sunday.

The site, formerly eddsworld.co.uk now links to a youtube video by his friends and flash co-stars explaining it, but he's been battling cancer, then was hit with a fever and his body was just too weak.

If you haven't heard of him, there's a chance you did without knowing it. But please enjoy what you can

Are the laws discussed in this article real? Strip-searches for minor arrests? Someone please tell me this is sensationalism... but at the same time it doesn't surprise me considering what the TSA gets away with.
