Kantai Collection, also known as Kancolle, is a DMM web browser SLG (Strategy/SimuLation Game) featuring anthropomorphic WW2 warships. It is the most popular game on DMM, and one of the most popular games in Japan, with more than 700,000 registrations since the game was released in April.
To that end, public registrations for the game have been closed off and relegated to a series of near-daily lotteries that open up registrations in batches of 8,000 as they work to set up new servers to handle the overwhelming demand to play the game. How to register:

How to register:
1. First, you need a DMM account. Making one is intuitive and self explanatory.
2. Next, you need to watch the Kancolle twitter.
The twitter account will, near-daily, announce lotteries between 5:30pm to 7:00pm Tokyo time. They will announce the exact starting time of the lottery long before it begins, and will also tweet instructions on what to do.
GMT-8 (PST) : 1:30am-3am
GMT-5 (EST) : 4:30am-6am
3. Set up a VPN or proxy, because Kantai Collection is region-locked to Japan.
VPN Gate is very easy to use and is free, offering a list of high quality proxy servers from various countries.
Note: You need to log in to DMM before using a VPN, or you will get a B-001 error.
4. Clear your browser's web cache so that the lottery page will show up at the appropriate time. Instructions on how to clear the cache from various different browsers can easily be found through Google.
I personally recommend using CCleaner to eliminate the web cache, as sometimes the browser will not clear everything.
5. Participate in the lottery.
Now this is where luck comes into play. When the designated time comes, enter the Kancolle game page:

The first is self explanatory. The second image, the cat-hitting image, means you have passed the initial part, having been accepted into the lottery itself. Those who haven't will receive the third image, cat-covering, and should try again during the next lottery. For those who got the cat-hitting image, now is the time to follow the instructions from the Twitter. Generally, the twitter will instruct would-be players to refresh every 5 minutes. Always, make sure at least five minutes passes, with several seconds to make sure.
Why? Because those who spam refresh or refresh faster than the given instructions are sent further back into the lottery queue, which can jeopardize your chances of getting a spot in the servers. The lotteries tend to last one hour, and should you not manage to see the server list upon refresh within that hour, then as with people who got the cat-covering image, you should try again the next day.
Those who failed to get in during the lottery will have increased priority in the following lottery. Those who made it to the server screen will have the option of choosing a server. The twitter announces which servers are open for registration, and they are generally the very last ones on the list, the newest and therefore less populated (in comparison) servers.
6. Play the game
If you're lucky or have been patient, you will now see the server list. Pick an open server, set up a username, and enjoy. At this time, you should refer to the various wikis.
One other source that you can look to for help to register and then play the game would be 4chan's Kancolle threads in /jp/. They are generally helpful and quick to respond to questions (Since they're no-life 4channers).
