She hadn't been able to feed much since she had left home, as she hadn't passed through any major cities and someone suddenly dropping dead in a minor town was sure to arouse suspicion, so Maria had been forced to keep her feeding in check, taking only a little from each of her few partners. Despite this, as she neared the edge of Artmirst, she'd suddenly felt her hunger abate, as though the presence of the demonic portal had sated her need to feed, at least partially.

Maria wondered why, but decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth as she walked down the road, the afternoon sun beating down on her as she saw watched the smoke stacks of the factory getting slowly bigger while she trudged along. After another hour or so, however, the sky clouded over, and it began to rain. Curiously, Maria saw a single bolt of lightning strike somewhere in the midst of the town, but didn't think anything of it. Pulling her cloak in further, she trudged on through the growing mud.

Perception: Success.

As she trudged on, she suddenly heard a horse neigh up ahead.

Maria starts to slow down her pace as she draws her gun, clicking the safety off as she did so every time she had practiced with the weapon. She moves, hunching down slightly, towards the sound of the horse. She thinks quietly to herself,

"If I am lucky... I may get a good meal today... no, I mustn't think like that... it is probably nothing but travelers, trying to flee this place. She lowers her head as she keeps walking, hands on her rifle, just in case there really was trouble up ahead...

Holding her rifle tight, Maria keeps going down the road, and after a moment she sees a horse running up the road, but starts is surprise as she sees a bunch of red tendrils sprouted from the beasts belly, waving wildly as the horse charges toward her. It isn't until the beast is nearly on top of her, only five feat away, that Maria is able to snap out of her trance and react.

Maria holds her ground as she looks up at the horse, whispering quietly to herself,

"Is this... the fate of those who get too close to the gate...?" She considers trying to fire her gun point blank, but she knew even with all the practice she had put into it, it wasn't going to do enough.

Planting her foot into the ground at an angle, she twists her body, using the momentum to push her gun back onto her back so that both her hands would be free and then further using her momentum to try to land a kick on the horse, hoping the hit would be enough to dissuade her attacker, but knowing that that was likely to not be the case...

To-hit: 16 + 46 + 3 = 65 vs 24 = hit.
Damage: 3 + 2 + 24 = 29 damage.

Marias kick lands solidly against the horses side as it passes by, the force of the blow knocking the beast on its side. Its tendrils lash out at her as it falls, trying to find a hold on her.

Grapple: 19 + 26 = 45 vs 34 = hit.

Maria gasps as the slimy appendages coming from the horses underside wrap around her ankles and pull her from her feet, dragging her toward the strange beasts as it rights itself back onto its feet.

Maria struggles to balance as she gets pulled to the ground. She had little doubt in her mind what this beast was going to try to do to her once it had her pinned down, and despite the fact that she knew she somewhat still had a chance to fight even in those circumstances, she would much prefer not to.

She waited until she was close to the beast, until it was in perfect range, then she pulls her head back as far as her neck would allow, and swung forward as hard as she could in an attempt to headbutt the closest part of the creature.

Grapple: 2 + 54 + 3 = 59 vs 15 + 26 = 41 == Maria wins.
Damage: (3 hp left.)

Marias head snaps forward just as the beasts tentacles real her in close to its body, slamming against the horses ribcage with devastating force. She feels a few ribs break under the blow, and the mutated horse neighs once in pain and collapses to the ground once more, releasing Maria from its tentacles, which now hang limp except for an occasional twitch.

Maria untangles herself from the tentacles as she looks around, rubbing her forehead a few times as she groans, shaking her head as she brushes as much mud off her cloak as she could, then looking at the horse,

"You poor and sad creature... you did not deserve this..." She looks towards the town and starts to pick up her pace, taking her rifle out again as she approaches the town, careful to be on the look out for more discrete paths that she could travel via.

Her cloak had gotten quite muddy, but it isn't anything she couldn't just brush off. The horse gives a last gasp as it dies from its wounds just as she looks down at it, and she turns back down the path.

Perception: Success.

After traveling for a half an hour or so in the rain, Maria spots a path leading off into the woods, going straight in the direction of the town. A shortcut perhaps? She couldn't be sure, but even if it wasn't she could always just turn back.

Maria looks at the path as she peers around, she realizes that it would probably be better to travel through the forest, thinking that at least larger beasts would have a harder time sneaking up on her, plus it would mean that it would be slightly easier for her to hide if she really needed to.

Taking one last look around, she heads into the forest.

Stealth: Success.

Maria stalks silently through the woods down the path, which only turns slightly now and then unlike the winding road. She comes out of the woods back onto the road much closer to Artmirst, and spots another such path up ahead on the opposite side of the road. Maria guesses that someone must have gotten sick of the turns and just gone straight through.

Maria smiles a little at the idea of someone being so frustrated with the turns that they simply cut a straight path though and begins to follow that exact path, hoping to get into the city by nightfall.

Still though, she keeps her rifle at ready as she looks around every once in awhile, not wanting to get a nasty surprise...

Moving swiftly down to the next path, Maria heads down it just as quietly as the first one, and suddenly the forest clears to reveal a massive black oak tree, with numerous mobile vines waving around it while others are off in different parts of the forest. It didn't seem to notice her, and she had a fallen tree sitting in front of her which she could easily prop her rifle against if she wished to try and attack the animate tree.

Maria slowly lays her rifle across the fallen tree and puts on the glasses, lining up the sight using her right eye as she carefully waits, looking for any point that seemed weak.

"So even the local trees are affected..." Finally deciding on a point to shoot, she takes a breath and squeezes the trigger.

Damage: 4 + 10 = 14 - 10 = 4 damage.

Her bullet smacks into the side of the thick tree, striking it squarely, though Maria couldn't see any weak point for her to strike at. When her bullet hits the tree, all of the vines stop moving, and as she chambers another round they start moving toward her, dozens of them.

Maria winces as she sees how little damage she did with her weapon. She puts it away as she sees the vines heading towards her, she puts her arms up in a defensive position, taking only quick jabs at the vines as they get near her, this time trying not to get caught, "This is not good..."

Damage: 4 + 2 + 23 = 29 - 10 = 19 damage.

Maria bats a vine away, ripping it in half as it tries to grasp at her, but there are plenty more where that came from.

Grapple: 2 + 60 = 62 vs 34 = Success.

Maria finds herself lifted off the ground by a dozen tentacles, all of them wrapping around her arms and legs and holding up off the ground.

Maria lets out a yell as she is easily pulled off the ground, squirming around as she grunts, trying to hit the tree, a little frustrated at the amount of resilience this thing was putting up. She looks at the vines and realizes that there was still a possible way to damage it and tries to lunge to the best of her abilities to take a big bite out of it.

Damage: 6 + 2 + 23 = 31 damage.

Maria bites into one of the plantlike tentacles, tearing a chunk off of it and filling her mouth with a taste sort of like old lettuce. The tentacles respond by wrapping around her further, trying to prevent her from resisting any more.

Grapple: 20 + 54 + 3 = 77 vs 16 + 60 = 76 == Maria wins.

Maria manages to prevent herself from being bound too tight to move, wriggling wildly and disrupting the tentacles attempt to bind her.

Maria spits out the taste in her mouth as she coughs,

"That tasted nasty... but it seems effective I guess." After narrowly dodging behind held down by even more by the tentacles, she lunges again, trying to take another bite out of the vines, still hoping she wouldn't have to resort to her 'other' method of fighting...
