Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

Nearby, Daniel spotted a gas station. It was in alot better shape then most of the buildings in the area. The pumps were intact and besides a row of bullet holes on one wall, the store portion was perfect as well. There weren't even any cars blocking its parking lot. The big glass windows showed that there was nobody inside it, and for some strange reason, looters hadn't got the items inside yet, though they were in a bit of disarray.

"Nice," Having finally found some form of shelter Daniel parked her cart near the door and headed inside, just to make sure there was no one there.

The gas station was indeed deserted. There wern't any hiding places, the bathrooms and office just tiny cubby holes compared to even most other gas stations. The store room was slightly larger, but still no place to hide. There wasn't even a box big enough to fit something that could be a threat.

"Alright, time to test this thing out." With safety finally found Daniel decided to take out the rifle. It did need a field test ,and she was the only one around so that job came to her. She set up a range using a counter inside and what ever items she could find. After ward, she took the rifle, made sure everything was working properly, and started shooting at her targets.

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

There were plenty of items to stack up for targets, including the classic bottle on a fence style. Daniel had her pick of all the brands, any color, shape, or size when setting up.

Once the range was finished, she hoisted the rifle onto her shoulder and flipped open the screen, turning the platform on. The display read:

Charge - 100%
EMP Shield - Damaged
Power System - Unstable
Firing Mechanism - Ready

Daniel took in this information, unsure if she should continue.

*Gulp* <EMP shield damaged, that really doesn't sound good... but...> Daniel looked around the rifle's interface, maybe she could figure out where the shield was, or fire a lower charged shot, 10% normal power should do the trick if it's available. If not, well you don't make discoveries by being perfectly safe all the time.

(Check for those then if not fire a single shot.)

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

There was no way to get to the EMP shield easily. There was a compartment labled for work on the piece, but it would require taking screws out and whatnot, a reall big hassle. Either way, the rifle was on now, wasn't it, why would the EMP shield need to be used.

Daniel target the rifle at her makeshift targets. After making sure she was sure to hit, and the power slider was on on "10", she pulled the trigger. A massive burst of energy flew from the barrel, a long, pencil thin streak cut out of the side of the building, utterly vaporizing anything it its way.. As Daniel tried to grasp what just happened, the display flashed red.

Daniel's eyes went wide as the laser shot through the wall. "Wow... Ahhh," She screamed, the display surprising her. "Oh, crap, crap." She put the rifle down carefully and went through the box and book, trying ot get all of the parts needed.

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

There weren't many add-ons in the box, so finding the right one wasn't hard. The one power adapter looked like it was intended to draw from a wall socket, but a small button flipped up eight solar cells. When the book said any power source, it really did mean any!

The add-on fitted into a standard slot near the trigger. The next version really needed an extension cord or something, the entire platform needed to be taken outside to recharge now, intead of just putting the cells outside and staying "safe" inside.

"OK, well... this might not be so good." Daniel muttered as she brought the rifle outside. Looking around nervously she tried to place it in the most concealed area that still got sunlight that she could. "Well, I should get a better look around here." She said taking her axe and pistol and scouting the nearby area, careful to never let the gas station out of eye sight.

(Look around for anything interesting.)

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

As luck would have it, sticking the platform in a bush but having the charger stick out worked really well. It almost seemed intended to work this way. Daniel could leave it there with little chance of discovery.

First priority was making sure nothing was attracted by the shot. Nothing came to attack, that was good, but there were noises in the city. It seems like the monsters activity was picking up, and surviors could be heard firing, but they were a long, long way off. The fight would probably be over by the time Daniel could cover that distance. Atleast it was a distraction from her little incident.

The sound of shots caused Daniel's ears to perk up. <There's other people...> She looked back at the rifle making sure it was still concealed, nodding at the bush she headed off. <It'll probably take me a while, but... well let's hope they'll help.>

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

Zeroing in on the sound, it seemed to be comming from a high story of a skyscraper a few blocks off. The path looked clear, but there were plenty of ambush spots. Far off in the distance, Daniel sees a leaper climbing the outside of a skyscraper, but it doesn't even look in her direction, thankfully.

The trek is slow, many damaged cars in the way, but Daniel manages to find herself at the entrance to the skyscraper in question just as the firing dies down. She made good time, it seems.

Despite it only climbing the building Daniel stayed close to the cars to avoid it potentially seeing her. Finally making it to the skyscraper she'd glace around the lobby, not really expecting anything to be there, then head towards the level she thought the shots were coming from.

(Check elevator first, using that if it works, if not stairs.)

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

The elevators were without power, but intact. They were programmed to open their doors if power failed, via a backup, and three of the four in the elevator bank were open. One had the roof tiles opened up and set neatly aside. Someone had climbed up here in the recent past, or maybe climbed down, no way to tell.

This was a viable, but dangerous, way to get up the building, but there was also a staircase nearby. The door was open, but the stairwell was as dark as the elevator shaft. Going this way was still safer, but the shaft allowed a faster path, if Daniel didn't fall.

(Heh, make you choose again)

(Just a bit, lol.)

Looking at her options, one thing stuck out to Daniel. There was a choice here that definitely had someone come through it recently. And because the tiles had been set aside, they probably removed them form the bottom and went up. Though it may be tough that was the most likely way to find someone, thus Daniel ascended, hoping that she wouldn't have to climb up the entire building.

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

Daniel gott into the elevator shaft without much trouble, the tiles were a nice boost, allowing her to grab the edges and climb up. Inside, there was the elevator cable to climb, but whoever went first left a clue. Muddy footprints were all over the walls. Seems the person used the wall to walk up while holding onto the cable. The foot prints went up along way, however, farther then Daniel could see. Getting into position, it didn't seem such a bad way to climb, and Daniel started up the shaft.

The tracks ended at the 29th floor. Seemed like a good sign this was the end of the line. The only way over was to swing and then let go, a risky maneuver.

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

"OK, you can do this." Daniel said to herself as she lined up the swing. She needed to be careful here, a fall would probably kill her. After she got the direction right Daniel pushed off the wall, and didn't jump. Then pushed again, a bit harder, and still didn't jump. She practiced her swing four more times, making sure she had enough power to carry her safely to the other side.

Knowing this was her best shot, she'd gotten everything she could right. Daniel kicked off the wall one more time, swung back and forth in the elevator a few times ot build momentum and let go, hoping her practice was correct.

Stealth Check

17+14+18 = 49 vs 40 = 20+20
3+14+18 = 35 vs 28 = 8+20

Daniel flew through the opening with a bit more force then she intended to. She smashes into the floor with a loud thud. However, nothing seems to be in the area close by to hear her, thankfully.

Down the hall, however, Daniel can hear people. There is a faint noise, clearly human, but slightly off. Two people atleast, and they seem to be in pain.

Re: The Quest of Light (SomCr)

After falling to the floor and tumbling Daniel stood up rubbing her neck. <Not the best landing I could've had.> She perked up when she heard people, but something was off. Taking her axe and holding it defensively she crept down the hallway, both hoping and dreading that she'd need to use it.
