Re: Member Announcements Thread

I've actually tried that and I can tell you from personal experience that it works like a charm. You should try it as well, let us know how it goes.

So.... Dragon Age. I played for ten or fifteen minutes before work this morning and I have to say, it actually looks quite promising. This just might be an Epic Game for Alias. Skill trees / character builds look appropriately in-depth, controls are smooth and easy to master, and here's the shocker: the graphics ARE NOT THAT GREAT.

*doubletake*

WHA?? An EA game with merely okay graphics instead of stunninglysuperbzomgdeliciouscakes graphics??? Dear god, I think EA might not have fucked this game over by getting their greedy little claws into it!!

Haven't got into any combat yet but I'll be sure to let you all know how that goes.
The skill and ability trees aren't as impressive as you might think. What you're seeing right now is what you get for the entire game, except unlocking another 4 with a specialization. Also, generally, the specialization talents seem to suck except for the rogue ones.
To illustrate: I'm playing a mage right now, and when I took Shapeshifting I thought "Well, no more getting killed in three hits when they get up close for me!" I was wrong. I managed to cast the bear transformation ability (which takes like 10 seconds and can be interrupted by taking 20 damage) and turned into a giant grizzly bear, and proceeded to maul one of the rogues surrounding Alistair as he desperately tried to survive. I did 1 damage per hit, and when the rogues downed Alistair they immediately turned and killed me in about four seconds.

The special abilities are largely hit or miss, some of them being useful (fire ball, cone of cold, bard songs) while the rest are completely and utterly useless (chain lightning, shield bash.) The skills are all worthless except for survival on one character, persuasion on your main, and a rogue with lockpicking. Far as I can tell, the rest are meaningless, and I've never used alchemy once so far.

Also, why is it that Bobo (the dog) does more damage at level 9 (per hit) then Shale, a level 12 golem?

I actually find the shield bash fairly useful. And the Champion specialization isn't too bad either.

As for mages, I use them to stand back and fling magical death at folks. So fire ball and frost cone and such. Rogues, mostly archers with lock picking. That's how I use em.

Just like Mass Effect though, I'm in love with the game for the storyline. Hell I even read the prologue book a few months back. It's about Maric and Loghain fighting against the Orlesians. It made it so much easier to just slip into the universe.

Didn't say they were impressive. I said they were appropriate. Also, shield bash is useful.

Re: Member Announcements Thread

I'm playing on normal, and I have yet to see anyone fail the save, including mages. Then the dog goes and tackles a darkspawn commander.

And my mage does the most damage in my party after casting 2 spells (tempest and fireball) but then she gets KOd in like 5 seconds because the AI can't be programmed to protect her.

I'm playing on hard, and just got morrigan, and I've seen shield bash work about two thirds of the time.

Also here's how to program the ai: when <mage> gets hit by <melee or ranged>; use ability <some sort of stun or knockdown>. Beyond that, YOU have to pause and command your party to rape whoever is killing the mage. The game won't do everything for you.

Re: Member Announcements Thread

See, I do that. But then, they turn around and go back to whatever they were doing. And my mage dies, and then Lilliana dies, and then Alistair dies, and then I'm left fighting a boss and half his minions with the dog (who wins.)

*shrug* Aggro manage then. If you're finding that your mage is getting fuckraped by mobs after throwing fifteen fireballs, use her debuffs instead. I've never had a problem keeping stuff off of my mage, and that's mostly because I play her as a debuffer and light dpser rather than heavy ranged dps. From the sound of it, any deaths you are experiencing seem to be a pebkac, not the game.

None of the debuffs have dramatic enough effect for, I tried the entropy spells and they didn't do shit. Literally, the enemy still hit all my characters with every attack and took/dealt the same damage.

It just annoys me that the characters abilities are all useless, and then I end up playing as Bobo who has yet to fail a single one of his abilities and does 60+ damage per hit, killing the boss that wiped out my party in two or three hits.

Eh, I'm just going to make a dwarf warrior with a greatsword next, so I won't have to worry about it anymore. (Except maybe for keeping Morrigan alive.)

Dragon Age... mooched off a friend, and I think Yahtzee pretty much sums up the game better than I could.
Definitely going to buy it when I have money, it is quite fun.

I play on normal and I see shield bash work quite a bit. Sometimes even against the bosses. And Morrigan doesn't get attacked too often. My warrior is pretty heavily armoured (which attracts enemy attention) and sometimes uses things like taunt, just as Alistair does. So the enemy is more concerned about me warriors.

I wish the demo for Dragon Age wasn't a bloody simple character creation... :(

I'd hate to dish out money for the game, only to not enjoy it.

Re: Member Announcements Thread

here is my advice for you raptor if you enjoy biowares other rpgs (Kotor,Mass effect) then you will enjoy dragon age. Its like they took kotor's combat and skill setup and put it in a mass effect style story and gameplay.

ps i will be on vacation starting wednesday until sunday. i am hoping to get my cyoas character to the temple she is heading before i go on vacation so please vote.

It might be similar, but it's not exactly like how The Old Republic plays out, just based on the videos I've seen alone. Like what Tass was talking about, a certain thing about the game might ruin it for me.

Don't let a pebkac ruin it for you. There's nothing wrong with the skills as far as I can see. Yeah, shield bash sometimes doesn't work. But you get it at level one. It's obviously not going to be as effective as a tier-four skill.

Temper temper, Mister Grouch. :(

Also, I managed to get to play a little of Dragon Age thanks to a friend, and so I decided to get it! Pretty fun game to, although I didn't see much of Mass Effect in there though, reminded me more of KOTOR more than anything else. Still, it's a good game.

And yet another announcement, I got my first bright green thingie! Yay! :D

Re: Member Announcements Thread

So it seems I'm back-ish for the moment. The reason for my absence was Dragon Age (duh), but it just keeps on crashing for me. A little bird told me I need a better CPU, and I've contacted a local retailer if it's even possible to install an appropriate CPU on my current mainboard.

Time to feed the fishes, they're looking aweful and their tank is filthy as hell.

Due to Thanksgiving this week, I'll be gone starting from about now, to late Friday night.

Much love, and I'll be sure to tell you all how good the Turkey was.

I ate the TG turkey last weekend^^

(We take the time we can:)

Actually, the best part isn't the starter during dinner. The best is the day after when you start the main course. (Leftovers...)
