Eh. We're getting better, I think. We can still save the planet, and ourselves, if we actually try. The hurdle is actually getting humanity to try.
And Hooker is right. The Sun will become a red giant toward the end of its life, 'eat' Mercury and Venus, and heat Earth enough to melt the crust, but it's not going to explode. It'll end up as a black dwarf.
