Re: Random movie talky stuff.

I don't really see the Tween Porn vibe in Snow White and the Huntsman despite having Kristen Stewart in it. Feels like a dark fantasy to me, and having Charlize Theron's version of the queen essentially like Elizabeth Bathory, I only feel that being backed up.

That's just me though. Still wish they didn't choose Kristen Stewart, but the rest of the movie looks good.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

lollin @ the leather pants under dress deal.

That movie certainly isn't chauvinistic.

Which is a nice segway to the latest underworld movie. I won't go into much detail but this movie seemed to be just about kate beckinsale kicking ass (they do try to veil it thinly in story, but so much more could have been done) in tight leather pants. Our friend from the first two movies (and demigod) Micheal Corbin appears for maybe 5 minutes at best, he has so little screen-time (most of which is spent changing forms, because in underworld particularily strong lycanthropes have to follow DBZ logic and take forever to "power up") that he doesn't even get billing in the credits!

Lets talk generally about the "story", somehow one or more of the writers have confused the traditional and widely accepted roles of the two different species. Vampires are cold, caluculating and use subterfuege, and cunning to mingle among humans in their cities undetected, and often hold postitions of power within human society. Where as werewolves would tend to be impatient, highly emotional, in constant battle for control over their body with their feral nature and far more suited to a rural community or the wilderness as they don't need to eat humans. But I'll stomach the setting change for werewolves because it's needed for the story, although the writers sure don't seem to think very highly of werewolves, putting them in the sewers with rats and all.

I'm just going to spoiler the rest because I don't feel like dancing around my point anymore.
Yet in this movie we see that the lycans have infiltrated human society far better than the vampires could after the purge. Controlling the only company that tests wether you're human or not which is quite out of character for them. It seems to me as if the writers are trying too hard to make werewolves the badguys or are completely confused on the lore. And for some reason werewolves are technologically superior to vampires (This one takes the cake), having made UV bullets, because silver bullets aren't hard to make, though points for using liquid silver so it spreads through the blood. They've got syrums to slow down the "change" of an individual into a lycanthrope, they were the ones that made Micheal Corbin into a hybrid. Now that they've figured out how to make a baby hybrid from Micheal and Selene, they've been able to make drugs that enhance their war-form's size, strength, and healing speed OH and let's not forget that it's fairly resistant to silver. But not silver grenades...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a decent movie if you can overlook the traditional roles of the two species, but I personally found it lacking.

I don't see how leather pants are chauvinistic, especially since these particular pants are actually leggings. It's pretty good choice of attire for anyone running around in the woods getting chased by assassins. Don't want to get those legs torn up with thorns, brush, and bushes. The combination with the dress top is a little weird, but it's a fantasy movie. I think it gives her a kind of rustic aura and fits in with the medieval fantasy vibe. The whole point is she's not your typical medieval fantasy "Oh dear me!" wait-to-be-rescued type princess. There doesn't seem much chauvinistic about that.

Besides, I'm with Sin. That queen played by Clarlize Theron looks like a fantastic character. Deliciously evil and turns into a swarm of ravens! She's the biggest draw of the movie for me. It looks like it'll be fun.

I'm gonna avoid the underworld conversation because I want to see that movie too, but I haven't yet.

Hm! Well then. I feel like a dummy. Just ignore me! I'm just attached to the whole rugged princess concept and misinterpreted I guess. I mean just look at my user name. Anyways.. Sorry!

...but the point still stands because we agree!

New Total Recall trailer.

Now, before fans of the Arnold/Verhoeven version, and people against remakes at all get upset and start raging without even looking into it... give it a shot. I think it looks good, seems to be a bit closer to the original Philip K. Dick novella, and looks like a good ride all in all.

I don't even mind the much more ordinary looking Collin Farell over the muscular and stands out in a crowd Arnold "How the fuck are you supposed to be stealthy" Schwarzenegger.

Not that keen on Collin Farrell (always end up seeing him as bullseye somehow), but the trailer looks pretty good. Total Recall is one of those movies that was more about the action and special effects (at least for me) and can definately benefit from a modern update.

I hope they had Michael Ironside as Michael Ironside

Eh, some poor cg, but it looks decent enough by today's standards.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

After seeing Collin Farrel in flicks like Tigerland, In Bruges, and Alexander (acquired taste that one...) I know he has the acting chops to pull off some really good stuff. I still need to catch him in London Boulevard.

Saw today, really enjoyed it. Got shushed by a woman, which should not happen during a martial arts film.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Saw the trailer for with Johnny Depp a while ago, and today I decided to find out what Tim Burton was ripping off this time in a moment of boredom. After reading the wiki entry on the and in particular the I wonder how someone who claims to have adored the old series could turn it into the bad comedy that the movie looks to be shaping into.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

You didn't really expect Tim Burton and Johnny Depp to actually make a serious homage to a horror soap opera did you. Kind of figured it would end up being a bad comedy myself, guess I was unfortunately correct. Shame too, I actually liked the old series.

Then maybe you should be quiet... else you'll get sent to the special hell.

Regardless, I really want to see that movie.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

So they aired James Cameron's Avatar for the first time on TV today. Watched it, enjoyed it even though I shouldn't. More than obvious Deus Ex Machina in the final act, predictable character deaths (typecast, anybody?), many scenes being effects moneyshot after effects moneyshot, and the message it sends to wheelchair-bound people is... questionable. At least worthy of discussion, in my opinion.

Of course you can have a fulfilled, happy life! All you need to do is trade in your crippled-ass body for a better one!

Avatar was fun for a one time viewing and breathtaking on the big screen. Cameron also really knows how to shoot an action scene. That climax...fucking yes, I love that climax. That's how you do a fucking climax.

Also, anyone here of ? It's Simon Pegg's new film, seems to be a dark comedy mixed with horror. Looks awesome.

Well, I don't think the film was ever about disabled people. Sure the main character is wheel chair bound, but that was never a major focus of the film.

Besides, it's true that nothing beats having a healthy body. You can have a happy life being a cripple, but it will never be quite the same as having a working pair of legs.

It may not have been a focus, but it was certainly an important plot point. Hell, the first thing he does when he gets his blue body is take off running and laughing. The fact that he ends up abandoning his old, broken body for his new blue one that would in every way be superior even disregarding the usefulness of working limbs is just icing on the cake.

It's there, and you don't even have to look that hard.
