Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Speaking of non Hollywood horror films, just watched Extinction the other day, a low budget German zombie movie that was surprisingly rather good. It focuses on a small group of survivors in an old US cold war base and what they do to survive on a mostly day to day basis.

I'll check it out. Zombie zombies or like infected?

I had a running joke with my friends that, in the event of holing up during a zombie apocalypse, holidays should still be celebrated in an effort to keep up spirits. And then I would be most likely shot for dressing like a zombie for Halloween.

Infected it seems... but it's not fully clear. The main character is a former German soldier (served in Kosovo) so he doesn't really understand how anything works. Though he points out the differences between shamblers and runners and some other mutated zombies.

I just came back from an advance screening of Pacific Rim. It's amazing. It's fantastic. It's probably the best chance of making "giant robots fighting monsters" a Hollywood genre. If you were in the fence, go see it. If you were opposed, carefully reconsider. This will likely be the best film of the summer.

I have seen pacific rim.

It was terrible, one of the worst crimes against cinema, an atrocity against physics and an abomination towards logic.

I need more.

Pacific Rim. Movie of the year. Best Mecha I've seen, period. Best fight scenes since The Avengers. (In a blockbuster style movie at least, don't start spouting asian martial arts movies or somesuch at me. I don't care.) Likable characters despite that all of them were deliberately made more into representative archetypes than people. Believable acting. Followable (if simple) storyline without any glaring holes. (Just some small ones that are easy to ignore.) No pointless romantic scene between the main characters despite the occasional hints that such was about to happen. Interesting monster and robot designs that makes all of them immediately distinguishable despite the simple color palette used and similarities in shape.

I give it a 9/10, with one point off for the goofy scientists.

As long as there isn't a mention of "Unobtainium" by said scientists, I think we can let it pass. I'm going to have to get out and see that. But then again, the Wolverine opens this week, too. I see a creature-double-feature in my weekend future, maybe.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Without any holes!

I could fit the entire british empire through the holes! But I'ma start with my favourite:

Hmmm... these giant monsters seem to be a reoccurring problem and fighting hem with out giant robots has mostly been working out but things are getting worse. What are we going to do? I know we'll discontinue the robots just in case we need some defense and build a wall... around the ocean... that will solve the problem forever... yeah, go us.

Also don't get me started on the australian accent (technically refered too as occa, as opposed to a normal australian accent, which is what wolverine has) the son had, it kept slipping into cockney.

Also I'm going to use this cargo ship as a sword (the same type of ship that can't support its own weight out of the water) and thats going to be great, but 5 minutes later when we are all out of weapons I don't know what are we gonna do? I know, quick draw our sword! (it was at this specific point that my brain decided that it could not go on, and the rest of me quite enjoyed the movie)

And really punching seems to work okay but the kill shots are all projectile attacks, but they need to be mounted on giant robots to get around the monsters damage reduction. If they aren't launched from giant robot they just don't quite cut it.

Also why are the fighters trained to beat up the monsters, pick them up and instead of deliver a finishing blow, throw them away, which might hurt if they were on land but because they are on water just starts the fight again.

I could go on... but as I said, the movie was an abomination, I still want another one though.

Ahhhhh!!!!! Too much nitpicking for wasted me. Stop whining about a decent action movie for once after so many Roland Emerich/Michael Bay style blockbusters. Yes it doesn't make sense that they don't just use cruise missiles or satellite weapons against the kaiju, or that said kaiju are used as weapons in the first place in place of more efficient fire and forget weapons. No, I don't care in the slightest to stretch my suspension of disbelief that far for the sake of the movie.

Also leave me alone I'm drunk and in the dark and took way too long to type this and may explain myself better later if I for some reason care enough to justify my opinion to people on the internet that I don't even RP with. I mean, to like, Taki and BlueSlime and Hafnium and etc, I might put in the effort. To the rest of you though, I don't give even a single fuck.

It's not Avatar, and thus isn't shitty and heavy handed for the stupid children expected to watch it. It's like Sucker Punch, in that it takes a whole grown up to understand most of the symbolism while still appreciating the well-above-average action scenes.

Politics and politicians. They had just started losing kaiju fights, they needed to gain popular support again. What better way than a promise to solve the problem forever?

Also don't get me started on the australian accent (technically refered too as occa, as opposed to a normal australian accent, which is what wolverine has) the son had, it kept slipping into cockney.
You can have that one, except that mostly no one gives a shit because Australian isn't his character trait, dickbag is.

Standard Giant Fistfight trope: You never use your best weapon first. Plot reason? It's possible that the swords were a new addition from the renovation. Pilot A didn't know about it, pilot B was new and following A's lead.

And really punching seems to work okay but the kill shots are all projectile attacks, but they need to be mounted on giant robots to get around the monsters damage reduction. If they aren't launched from giant robot they just don't quite cut it.
If range is an issue, than yes it makes sense. Most of the shots with the plasma weapons are at very close range.

Also why are the fighters trained to beat up the monsters, pick them up and instead of deliver a finishing blow, throw them away, which might hurt if they were on land but because they are on water just starts the fight again.
Actually, something that size hitting that water from that high up (several stories) would hurt like a motherfucker. Not good enough for a kill shot, I'll grant you.

I could go on... but as I said, the movie was an abomination, I still want another one though.
We can agree on that, at least.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

So, mentioned it in the announcement thread but forgot to talk about the fact that I went to go see The Wolverine.

Trailers first, as I remember them.

47 Ronin - This one ticked the CB off. Keanu Reeves is playing the main character and to quote CB "The 47 Ronin is the greatest story of revenge ever told and did not involve fucking dragons!" We're probably still going to go see it anyway.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty - My version of the 47 Ronin here. Mostly because it stars Ben Stiller. But it's a remake of a movie based off of a short story that's basically about an everyman who concocts these elaborate fantasies to make his humdrum life and ordinary-ness less so. The original starred Danny Kaye (one of my favorite actors), had a musical number or two, and was a spy drama about a book editor who gets caught up with a blonde bombshell. Neither of them seem exceptionally true to the source material (though the new one seems to be drawing slightly from the old, Stiller works for LIFE magazine) but I honestly don't know how I feel about it.

Paranoia - The only reason I remember this one is because it's the one I forgot *laughs* Down and out kid gets tired to steal insider secrets from rival company. Original company fucks him over. Decides to use electronic genius to take them both out. Meh.

Elysium - Matt Damon's scifi epic of the down-and-outs vs. the filthy rich. Personally, I want to see it to see Jodi Foster acting like a stone cold bitch. But I'll probably wait until I can see it at home. Looks a little frantic at times and I like rewind.

Percy Jackson, Sea of Monsters - Old friends, new friends, old villains, new villains, holy fucking epic looking monsters and special effects, charybdis, and freaking NATHAN FILLION as Hermes.

That's about all that I remember. I think I might be missing one, but it's one of those "shows the impact it had" if I can't remember. If I remember later, I'll replace this with that.

On to Wolvie.

An enjoyable movie from a comic standpoint. Set post-X3. Delves a bit more into Wolverine's past as he heads to Japan at the request of a dying man whose life he once saved. While there, he meets the kickass Yukio, falls for Mariko, takes on a bunch of baddies who, I find myself going "how is he still alive" during some of the sequences, and deals with both ninjas and cyborg samurai. Also, Famke Janssen in a nightie. Several times.

Honestly, I enjoyed the movie. I wouldn't call it epic, by any standard, but it was a lot more enjoyable than X3. CB went with me and, as a good litmus test, enjoyed it as well, despite only having bare minimum knowledge of Wolvie/Xmen lore. There were more than a couple moments that had me shaking my head in disbelief but others that had me laughing, as well as cheering. Another thing I liked about the movie is that he was paired up with two strong female characters who did more than shriek and run when they were threatened. Hell, Mariko actually tried to beat up her kidnappers until one of them sticks a gun in her face. And Yukio just freaking kicks all kinds of ass. CB's biggest complaint was the use of the ninjas but was at least impressed with their tactics.

It twists a little of the lore around but for the most part, holds to a good portion of it, which I liked. I also had a fangirl moment during the end credits, when they did the bonus scene (nothing at the end.). All I can say is that I'm really jazzed for the next one, too.

See it again? Maybe. Own it? Yes. Recommend it? Matinee is likely a good choice and go in for it being a popcorn movie. It's fun to watch Hugh Jackman just cut loose and kick ass. The mid-credit scene (and there's only the one) had me doing a fangirl squee once it was done, especially since I know from Comic-con news what it's setting up. Which, of course, had the CB laughing. "You done?" "Uh-huh." "You sure?" "Yup." "Okay." And then had me explaining to them *why* the squee. One of these days, they'll get to sit down with my comic collection.

But, that's about it. Really enjoyed it. Didn't fully fall in love with the thing, but again, fun romp. Worth the the money, at the very least. Go see if you are a fan, but check the purist at the door.

I'm super excited for this cause it's from Neil Blomkamp. The guy who made District 9. I know Matt Damon can do action, and Neil can do a damn good sci-fi. I'll personally be seeing this in theatres.

Also. I loved The Wolverine. Might just be me though.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Saw the CB tonight and went "What trailers did we see?" and we listed them off and I was reminded of the one that I forgot, and, speaking from a personal point of view, I can see why.

Anchorman 2. Not saying anything about it because, frankly, I could care less, but there might be folks interested in it, so, *shrug*

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

Well, I just watched District 9 on DVD. I know I'm late, but whatever.

It's been hailed as brilliant, and I can't quite join that chorus. Directing is good, acting is good, but the story is relatively predictable, down to the ending. I also find the social commentary to be somewhat ham-fisted. The idea to the movie itself is pretty original at least, I give it that much.
Shut the fuck up, past me. District 9 is a great movie about a man overcoming his own prejudice and weakness as well as a nice little study about humanity and inhumanity of man.

Re: Random movie talky stuff.

In contrast, Indiana Jones IV was on free TV tonight. I watched it, thinking "this can not POSSIBLY be as bad as people make it out to be." And it wasn't.

It was so, so, SO MUCH WORSE. This movie is so riddled with plot holes and stupidity it looks like somebody emptied a tommy gun into it. Shia La Beouf said that if he'd mess this up, he'd be the Jar Jar Binks of Indiana Jones. Oh no. THIS ENTIRE MOVIE IS JAR JAR BINKS.

Last Crusade is my favourite adventure movie of all times, and to think that they BESMIRCHED it with this piece of GREASER MONKEY shit (no seriously, there is an entire species of monkeys with a greaser haircut in it - THIS IS A CRUCIAL PLOT POINT) makes me downright furious if you can't tell.
