Ergh this kind of hard to answer....
Mostly it depend on ur unit of coz, if you are more lucky on black gacha or fairy or plat cans should be able to do it....
I think its save to say at least rank 100 since you really want that morale buff at least.
In my case I'm really lazy or more like i dun't have spare chr to spare doing story map most of time....
My head has always been thinking about event map and what the best story map to feed my unit in this case is dessert map (40 chr) hence why I'm pretty slow on story.
I believe the only wall for 3 star (well u can do 1 star clear) is only 4th story map, reason is golem golem and more golem (aka high def enemy map, where low lvl = low atk unit will have alot trouble)..
It also safe to say you will need some AW from 3rd story map onward unless you just have the right silver unit to clear, which i doubt most ppl want to lvl their silver if they get gold++ (main reason AW make silver unit almost inferior... i know its 2 cost less, but the stat sometime just not enuff specialy physical atk-er vs enemy def, PS: strangely enuff silver witch still useful

Edit: yes there still silver clear for 3rd story map without AW, but using those strat take care on ur own risk
