Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't your president already announce he'd veto the deal?

That said, I doubt this is the last we'll see of this sort of legislation, it's obvious that the american government wants some measure of power over the internet and as per standard negotiation tactics they start with a ridiculous offer to make their final offer seem more appealing.

Make no mistake, the fight is FAR from over once SOPA/PIPA get shot down, they made it perfectly clear that their goal is to monitor the only truly free media out there that anyone can access and they will very likely keep haggling and attempting to throw up new legislation to accomplish that.

Anyone who actually does their research would realise that online piracy isn't even close to a big deal, stealing of copyrighted property has been going on for centuries and most cases of such theft is done by people with no intention of purchasing the property where the alternative of theft not be available (leading to potential free advertisement for the copyright holders instead of absolutely no gain at all)

Yet companies love exaggerating the "damage" piracy imposes on them, it makes it rather easy to point the blame towards something other than your own bad product after all.

My rather longwinded point here is that the whole "stop online piracy" claim is a hoax, and excuse to make the legislation appealing to people who aren't aware of what's going on and win support, also demonising people who speak against it (you're supporting piracy!)

So think about it, your own government is lying to you and manipulating you in order to force your compliance, I think there's a much bigger issue going on here than just speaking up against a legislation.

plus surely it would damage the american economy as many websites would no longer need to pay for servers in america and some would shut down entirely damaging advertising and whether they like it or not porn provieds money and jobs so this would make more people jobless as well as pornless.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

The Pirate Bay is basically taunting SOPA and PIPA.

"SOPA can’t do anything to stop TPB. Worst case we’ll change top level domain from our current .org to one of the
hundreds of other names that we already also use. In countries where TPB is blocked, China and Saudi Arabia springs to
mind, they block hundreds of our domain names. And did it work? Not really."
I'm pretty sure comments like this though will help SOPA and PIPA.

Do any of you think this might be another big distraction? Think about it ... we're all preoccupied about SOPA and PIPA now, but what if it's just hiding something else?

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

Well considering the whole "stop piracy" claim is just a cover for "stop freedom on the internet" I doubt we've seen the end of it, the mask failed but the purpose remains, it would be quite unlikely for those involved to give up after this.

*edit*

After reading the linked articles above its obvious SOPA is by no means dead, "redraft" just means they will attempt for the same result using slightly different context which will come down to them still wanting control of the internet but in a way people wont object to, so they will be feeding us the same meal but instead of forcing it down our throat it will be in small chunks.

This is just another "clever" ploy where they suggest something outrageous at first so all the protesters will throw everything they have at it and slowly whittle down resistance. Ask yourself this, how often are you going to sign a petition to stop something like SOPA, once? Twice? Ten times? Twenty? They can keep throwing this at us until we grow weary of fighting it, unless the cancer is cut out entirely it will keep coming back. What I'm trying to say is that it should be made impossible to push this kind of unconstitutional bullshit in the first place and not just be swatted down like in a game of whack-a-mole.

Yeah ... just like those bastards from the PMRC ... But even with all their brainwashing media, people still think freely and are allowed to an opinion.

What do you know ... the system kinda worked! For now ...

Well, I sure hope people keep their eyes peeled, in that case ...

All I know is that if SOPA passes somehow while I'm still alive I'll openly rebel. Whether that means through violence or peaceful protesting I'll make it my goal in life to get the law revoked.

Edit: Also I'm almost certain they just did this so they could try to get more support from the big industries.

What do you mean you still have Megaupload? I'm British as well and I've lost access to it because of it being shut down.

He probably thought the IP just got blocked in the U.S. or something, but no, the entire thing has been taken down and their assets have been seized (without any form of lawsuit mind) they took all the hardware and even a bunch of personal property from the founders using only a claim of foul play (again, no trial)

Let this be a lesson kids, America gets to steal your stuff just by accusing you of theft.

Pretty much. The outcry against SOPA will probably make it fail. So they will tone it down a bit an try again until it gets through. It's true though that there needs to be stronger ways to combat online piracy. Just not something that gives private corporations the power to shut down most of the internet at will.

Honestly as much as I do love my free hentai I would like to see the good content providers make more money though so I get more an better hentai. I have a love/hate relationship with piracy lol.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

a list of supporting and opposing for congress, right now its 61-189 so the bills chances of passing are close to zero. however, Im going to copy something i wrote on a different forum, as i feel sopa is nothing more than stepping stone for future little brothers.

Before we look at the main goal of the bill, we must look at the writers of it. As it turns out, most of origins of the bill come from strong media giants. (A good example is Hollywood) You must remember that these people are experts of predicting people actions towards certain things, as they have to be to get there products watched or sold. So why would these people write a bill that will quite obviously fail? The answer, This is just a stepping stone, a paving for future less extremist bills. It’s the simple idea that if you hear something for a long time, you start to forget its there, take it for granted. This is the logic behind SOPA, for after it falls, we will have been introduced to the idea of internet censer ship. Then, a new bill will be realized, not as strong a SOPA, but still extremist, and still strongly hated against. But the bill will be less opposed, people will start to look at it and say “perhaps we do need this?” I’m sure you’re seeing were I’m going. The point of this is just to get people used to a bill that, for all we know, is already written. If this future brother of SOPA was seen by you today, chances are you would still hate it, even though it less drastic than the current SOPA. But what about in ten years? How long does it take for someone to tell you something you strongly disagree with, before it starts to sound right?

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

The thing with online piracy is no more than the companies fault. They just don't want to, or better yet, CAN'T find an original and attractive way to sell their products anymore. Take Electronic Arts for example: When was the last time they launched a decent game without a ton of bugs? They supported SOPA, by the way. Then take Blizzard's method of selling World Of Warcraft. Or Bethesda's Skyrim which is WORTH buying simply because of the overall quality!
People will still pay for a good product, even if it's available for free on the internet. It's only common sense that they do.
And if the companies would find something tangible to sell along with their media (like Bethesda's GOTY Edition packages or music albums printed on vinyl with fancy covers and inlays, instead of shit CD's) they will sell, because those things you just CAN'T download off the internet!

sopa and pipa have not passed, calm down y'all, you can remember this is just a battle and not the war but for the mean time, a brief moment of peace.

Until I see a fair trial or actual fair proceeding against Megaupload, I'll keep my guard up against big bully USA.
