Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

Re: Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

Well, I can't say I'm aware of huge personality shifts in localisation, but those archetypes you suggest do seem to be things that would shift in localisation anyway because they are very Japanese archetypes - especially if you're referring to the "perverted ... bla bla bla ....fully if Western mainstream H-games take off, we can get more niche stuff flowing from that.
for your info, tons of japanese H-games in the 90s are getting english version with no problem at all. It's only after this feminist crap that localization means censorship/content removal

Re: Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

And yeah, to try and steer this back on topic, this is why a lot of Japanese H-games won't get localised. There's a big culture gap in a lot of areas of H-games, for example tentacles, which are mainly a product in Japanese culture due to post-WW2 censorship laws. The West didn't have censorship laws which could be exploited in that way, and so we don't have that portion in our culture at all. There's similar cultural problems for a lot of stuff as well; "weak females" is still quite well entrenched in Japan, where men are overwhelmingly the breadwinners in a family, and so it doesn't fly well in mainstream culture, which is a problem for any game that relies on say, exploiting weak female characters - another thing that's quite common in some H-games genres, notably NTR.

Ultimately, we can't rely on localisation for jumpstarting a western H-games scene. There's just too many contentious issues which would either rule out Japanese H-games for mainstream consumption (and by mainstream, I mean in the same way that porn is mainstream; not necessarily something that people talk much about, but widely consumed) or relegate them to niches. We do need our own, Western developed H-games, which reflect the cultural norms of our society. Because simply put, if we don't have Western H-games which tap into the mainstream, we won't have Western H-games at all. Of course, it sucks this is a viewpoint which sucks for people not part of the Western mainstream, but hopefully if Western mainstream H-games take off, we can get more niche stuff flowing from that.

Its not just things like tentacles or "weak females". Its also stuff that a lot of manga/anime/hentai fans take for granted.

A lot of tropes either don't translate into English/other languages (ie. tsundere) or require in-depth knowledge of Japanese culture (ie. the elementary school uniform and the train riding high school student. And then there are the countless references to older manga/anime that literally cannot be translated because the original manga/anime wasn't localized in the first place.

Hahahano. 1980s Nintendo says fuck you, take your Christian crosses and red blood out of the game or you don't get to release your game on the system that is credited with singlehandedly reviving the video game industry.

Yep, that's kind of the point I was trying to make, although restricted to the stuff Erobotan mentioned. Incidentally Erobotan, maybe you should look up the number big Japanese games that didn't make it to Western shores from the 90s. Off the top of my head there's Seiken Densetsu 3, Final Fantasy 5, Tales of Phantasia, Dragon Quest 5 onwards (up until recent rereleases on the DS), Star Ocean (until PSP rerelease), Chrono Trigger in Europe, Terranigma in the US. That's just SNES games, just RPGs, only major franchises, and without me looking anything up. (EDIT: Looks like imercenary also made this point in a Ninja edit). Oh, and as I remember it, Chrono Trigger was localised pretty heavily: I remember that the prehistoric booze drinking contest was replaced with a soup drinking contest for western audiences, because obviously western kids need to be protected from alcohol.

Also, to whomever negrepped me as a "SJW", you're advised to look at my sig where my translation projects are. While I don't mind being it being known that I have progressive views, I doubt the real SJWs would have me. I also thought it should have been clear that while I am making an argument for my viewpoint, I'm by no means forcing anyone to go along with my views.

Like it or hate it, proper localisation is necessary for a lot of games to be released to the Western audience. Games are big expensive things, and so companies are going to use localisation to maximise their appeal in new markets - that's just how business is going to work. If you must disagree, take it up in a philosophical debate of "capitalism vs. just make the world give me the things I want". Not saying capitalism is perfect mind, but it's the system we've got to work with.

In that sentence I was specifically talking about H-Games "for your info, tons of japanese H-games in the 90s are getting english version with no problem at all." becaise abosain claims that japanese tentacle and stuff is incompatible with western value. The fact is this whole japanese culture only become a problem after feminist insert themselves in the industry, everything works fine before their existence.

And the 90s also glorious days for hentai anime too, tons of them featuring shy/obedient girls, rape, and tentacles! All in english!!!

You should have probably been more specific then. In any case, I'd direct your attention to an interesting article on Wikipedia that I think highlights the actual issue on Tentacles specifically: . It's a good summary, but as it's Wikipedia, you do need to check sources. Essentially, US Lawmakers have been updating the law in such a way that it would be very hard to produce any form of pornography involving non-humans. That's a clear sign of "this content is not welcome here", and I would argue demonstrates that there are different cultural values between the West and Japan, as democratic lawmakers are typically tasked with formalising what is and isn't acceptable in a culture.

In any case, it shouldn't be a surprise. Manga isn't as popular in the US as say, DC or Marvel Comics. It should be no surprise that Japanese H-games aren't going to be particularly mainstream either.

I clearly stated "H-games" there. You should read more carefully. I mean it's just 2 sentences lol

And about your wikipedia link stating that sex with animal is illegal. Maybe, but we're talking about pixel, and maybe some paint in case of anime. That link is talking about real life stuff. And lately wikipedia is biased as hell, cant' be trusted!

Re: Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

Well, rather than pansies I would say most of western studios are bunch of idiots that are putting their (or forced upon them) ideas before their games.

Here is an idea:
Create as much buzz around your game as possible, no matter if it's good or bad. Whisper to some ears about how you can find brutal crap in your game, nudity, disgusting themes, other triggering stuff. Wait for people to attack it (be it soccer moms, femnazis, sjws, other idiots), add controversies and such.
Generally, be responsible for people badmouthing your game, upset them with stuff that rest of companies try to avoid with their products.
Embrace with love "Doesn't matter what they are saying as long as they are talking about it".

????????
PROFIT!

Now, with all seriousness, no west company would go for that, would they?
Bzzzt, wrong!
99% of all controversies related to GTA (pretty much whole series) are because Rockstar is responsible for spreading them.
Does it work? Hell yeah. Does it make their company image look bad? Yup, but only in eyes of people that aren't even their customers. Does it bring money? Oh yeah.
It's like... someone made a game with sexist, misogynist themes popping out here and there and turned toward most hardcore femnazi, with big smile and "Hey, look what I did!".
Is that a bad idea? Heck no.
Not only free, but quite effective marketing, that's what it is.

Of course, idiots from... let's say Nintendo would never go for that as it would hurt their family friendly image. Almost same goes for EA and a lot of publishers/studios out there.

Damn, same method mixed with some extra was used for Deadpool movie and look how well it went.
Which makes me wonder, why so many publishers are trying to aim at age range 12-16 with their games, while those are less than 20% of gamers. Most people playing games are 25-35 with it leaning more towards 30+.

Sometimes it just feels like huge chunk of entertainment industry in general is forced to be family friendly af.

It's almost same level of idiocy that Illusion showed years ago:
Their Rapelay title created huge buzz of controversies, but instead of embracing it and trying to ride on this hype and become known world wide porn games studio, they shriveled up and hide on their little island.
Like... wtf? Why?
That was such a huge chance and they just ran away from it... I just don't get it...

As I said, check sources with Wikipedia. I'd point out though that I'm talking about the making images section further down the page. Generally speaking though, from my own knowledge of the laws that have been passed in the US and the UK:

1) Newer laws apply equally to making real images and making pseudo-images; pseudo-images are those generated by computer or art. State laws tend to be a bit sloppy on the exact definition of pseudo-image though. It's unclear if they would apply to obvious cartoon depictions, or pixels, or 3D models.
2) Animal is normally defined to be "non-human creature" or if you're lucky, "non-human vertebrate creature". The latter would probably admit tentacle monsters, but it's the less common definition.

In any case, the precise definitions are not really the point; it's the sentiment it sends out, especially to companies who are investing substantial sums of money, which is that this kind of content would, at the least, be skirting the law in a way that suggests it is not compatible with the spirit of the people who set the laws.

My memories are a little fuzzy on Rapelay, but wasn't it that it was being imported by a company that got banned from Amazon for violating their ToS (probably the no obscene content rule) when mainstream newspapers found it on Amazon? And then Illusion decided that they didn't need the bad publicity, basically because what is edgy porn in Japan is obscene (and therefore likely illegal) in the West? As I said, my memories are a little fuzzy on this... But yeah, whether or not they could ride the wave of publicity with a niche, the fact they would have to deal with a whole load of mainstream negativity is very offputting, and would require substantial resources to handle.

I understand the point, but I can't agree.
Case of legality depends on country, but most of them can distinguish between reality and fiction, making it more of a "muh feels" problem. Imagine people bothering with every "muh feels" case and letting it go wild. We would have a lot of weird people, forcing weird rules upon everyone, demanding weird crap to change their fantasy world into reality and generally, censorship of stuff they don't want to hear about, acting like kids throwing a tantrum whenever they don't like something... Oh, wait, forgot it's our timeline.
Their game was a work of fiction, hurts nobody.
But the way Illusion backed from all of this proves one point: They didn't have any respect for their own work. It's literally a case of: "It's red colored, therefore it's shit, you are shit, go fuck yourself", without pride in what they crafted, they cried and ran back to their safe space.
All they had to do to thrive in the market and survive was: Nothing, just keep releasing games. No resources needed, no damage control needed, nothing.
Sometimes no action is a best reaction.

If it was a case of bad gameplay, shitty graphics or anything that can be worked on and improved, then critique is important, should be taken into consideration and all of that worked on for improvement's sake.
Unfortunately this wasn't such a case, it was simple matter of not having enough pride in their craft and respecting their own work. Illusion devs/boss/one responsible (at that time) proved they failed with that.
Thus, my respect for them is gone (0*n is still 0).
Same goes for any company/person that doesn't respect their own work.

And Rapelay just had textures and polygons. That worked out real well for them didn't it?

Quite frankly, you're crawling through a non-existent legal loophole thats been around for so long that internet trolls use it just to get gullible people arrested.

Re: Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

I feel like with the legality of anything, if someone wants to get outraged about the content of a game or work of art and find a way to attack it they will.

There are legal loopholes in both directions. Both for the ones defending the art and attacking it. At least to a certain extent.

but you know, despite all you said, the fact is recently more and more big companies are ignoring these "law" these days. More games comes uncensored and more store turn a blind eyes and let "questionable" products on their stores.

The one who still get butchered are the ones who's picked by SJW companies (and the censored games are then hacked and modded by gamers to restore all of the original contents). regarding this, this is just my guess but maybe this is the reason why people still call you SJW despite all the translation that you did. In localization scene there quite a lot SJW companies, they pick sexy & "questionable" title and butcher it, while posting in social media how much they hate gamers. So translating lewd stuff no longer make you immune from being called SJW thanks to these people.

the fact they would have to deal with a whole load of mainstream negativity is very offputting, and would require substantial resources to handle.
nah, Yoshiiki speaks the truth. illusion is too angry to realize that they can ride the bad publicity to obtain riches and fame just like GTA dev. Most japanese gamedev are bad at marketing just like this. Bayonetta comes to steam after like 7 years? wtf lol, this game is hugely popular when it was released in console, it should come to steam likr 1-2 years right after the console release. Same with Valkyria Chronicle which despite very successful on steam SEGA do no follow up to release the rest of the titles. Or How Nintendo decide to stop selling their retro NES console production despite it sells more than wii u.

And Rapelay just had textures and polygons. That worked out real well for them didn't it?

You should read Yoshiiki post, Illusion decided by themselves to withdraw support for international market despite NO ONE forcing them to do so (which is a bad decision on their part). Huh? Amazon ban? who cares, there are tons of other well known japanese stores who support english language and can handle overseas sales. Every otaku and H-games fans know these stores.

And let's hope it's going to stay that way until it's mainstream.
Reason behind it works on same principle behind indie games boom after Minecraft success. People realized that this works and there is not only potential in it but a lot of free space in the market.
Nowadays we have tons of indie games. Same thing happening in west porn games and as it is a snowball effect, it will go until we are literally drowning in porn :D
Which is great, because: having a lot of things to choose from. Of course, as with everything, cons to that are: crappy games made only to milk customers.

The one who still get butchered are the ones who's picked by SJW companies (and the censored games are then hacked and modded by gamers to restore all of the original contents). regarding this, this is just my guess but maybe this is the reason why people still call you SJW despite all the translation that you did. Political views aside, habisan is far from SJW, I would never stick that to a rational person because I don't agree with someone. Negrep blaming tactic is exactly what SJW would do, shame on you anon, shame on you. But, before stones start flying, I did that too once or twice some time ago, so I am hardly without that blame (though, if I am going to negrep anyone in the future, I will remember to stick my nick with that >_>). So shame on me too.

Back on offtopic topic (xD). Yes, a lot of localisations teams tend to butcher and remove/change stuff that isn't hard to understand for your typical Joe Shmoe, but it goes against their own views. Big part in that is being also eaten by game ratings and them trying to get it as low as possible. Again, this weird trend of forcing everything as family friendly. I will agree that there are things that are hard and sometimes impossible to understand for west audience so it needs to be changed, and that's ok.
Even saying things like: We can't localize it because 70% of game would be hard to make sense for western players. Then don't change it, there are enough weebs that wouldn't mind... I would even gamble and say that this kind of people would go for it even if they couldn't get 99% references, but still want it because it's from Japan and that makes the game already worth their money.
It's weird and sometimes doesn't make sense. Like with marketing, a lot of people doing it properly would confirm that sometimes doing opposite to what logic suggest gives desired effect.
But yeah, let's just remove sexual innuendos and call it localisation instead of censorship.

It's not exactly that Japanese devs are bad at marketing. Ads in Japan are much different than ones in west, there is a different mindset, different type of marketing which doesn't exactly work in west.
Even ones for US and EU are slightly different, but way similar in comparison to a lot of asian countries.
And in general, companies in Japan have clear contrast when compared to west, all of that surfaces when cultures collide.
Games that are shipped to Japan also face some problems, a lot of censorship even.
So, is that a reason their marketing fails? No, hell no.
This is a simple matter of putting right person on right position, someone who does understand both markets.
Simple, isn't it? Unfortunately it's rarely happening and in most cases, people responsible for those tasks either think they know what they are doing or don't at all.
Shit, even few weeks of research of different culture has huge impact, but it feels like stereotype on top of another stereotype is a base for everything.

Some devs in Japan already started realizing that and tend to put that in effect (look at Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus and no butchery other than hiding girls ages and removing few lines from dressing room, with statement of "We don't want to censor our games anymore"). NieR Automata had some butchery in dialogue, but visually it stayed the same. Damn, even whole butt controversy added to sales because Taro Yoko embraced it.

Really, there is no point in fighting windmills, especially when those windmills aren't even real.
I said it before and will say it again.
There is a huge hole in game porn market, especially outside of Japan. Clock is ticking, so they will either realize huge potential in releasing their ero games in both eng and jap OR this hole will get filled without their help, taking their chance away. It's that simple, yet apparently too hard to realize :D

I think it also has a lot to do with market reach these days. Games are coming to Western markets a lot more frequently and therefore there is demand for uncensored versions of the games which break out of the Japanese market and into ones which allow uncensored content.

Re: Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

Even with all that's been said, I'm still sticking to my opinions. I'd also point out that Nier Automata's sales are more to do with it being an actually good game from a well regarded studio rather than butts. On the outfits, Kotaku does writeups on video game fashions on occasion, and - it's worth a quick look, but the takeaway from that piece is that the 2B's outfit is actually very grounded in Japanese fashion (although a bit more revealing than you would normally find). As it's grounded in real world fashion, it's a lot less controversial than it could be. If you look at high fashion, there's actually quite a lot of nipples on show. Not controversial though, because it's fashion. Style does seem to be a good way of subverting cultural reference points.

But ultimately, Nier isn't a good reference point for H-games, because Nier is primarily about violence where I would put the cultural values of Japan as slightly less tolerant than the West - meaning that generally speaking, violence in Japanese games isn't going to shock Westerners (ignoring a few fringe cases). The main cultural issue is depictions of sex, where Japan is somewhat more open than the West. I mean, think of things like Comiket where adult and non-adult comics are sold in great numbers. Things are starting to change in the West, but we're nowhere near that level of openness with regards to depictions of sex.

Similarly, if you haven't done so, you should probably look at some Japanese porn alongside Western porn just to verify that the two are very different animals. Expecting Japanese H-game devs to find huge success in the West is unrealistic, because the two cultures have very different views on sex-based content. I can see a handful of Japanese H-game devs managing it though, but this will be the exception rather than the norm. Other games are going to remain fairly niche (e.g. Senran Kagura) - although perhaps they will be a popular niche.

Until people actually seriously look at the market for English language adult games targeted as the West, it's going to remain a niche rather than mainstream.

First of all, sex sells, no denying that.
Also, no denying that B2's butt wasn't main selling point, but(t) it was an enormous booster to the sales. Shit, even people I know learned about NieR due to the butt controversy and decided to check it out.
For me her outfit seems normal, but it's a possibility to get a nice view of her bottom cheeks that makes it smexy :D

Fashion shows? Place where a lot of people want to create shock and controversy to get a name? Yeah, if I were to look for some slut outfits for heroine shaming, that would be my first place to start searching :D
It simply lost it's power due to being repeatedly used over the years.
More open? A country where genitals (in porn) and nipples (in games/some media) are censored? Where authors are fighting censorship with creative ideas (To Love-Ru Darkness manga)? Where all you have left are dirty jokes and imagination? They are actually getting more strict with every year. At this rate even in porn games they will censor nipples. Japan is killing their openness as we speak.
Irony, they are literally walking towards scenario depicted in Shimoneta (which was a satirical joke on the topic).
Similarly, if you haven't done so, you should probably look at some Japanese porn alongside Western porn just to verify that the two are very different animals. Expecting Japanese H-game devs to find huge success in the West is unrealistic, because the two cultures have very different views on sex-based content. If we are talking about irl porn, then I look at a lot of them. Difference is, I do it for drawing research (can't get off to real people). Both sides follow their own guidelines, which makes them different. Even stuff like camera angles, scenes length, top thing to focus on, etc. In Japan they have to deal with censorship, which was a reason a lot of fetishes were made (like bukkake).
Japanese porn game markers would actually find a huge success in west market. Those being different from what west have is interesting in customers eyes as soon as they see it(and let's be honest, for westerners, asian culture was always interesting, history says so).
I think in review with Mangagamer translator/marketer this sentence shows exactly what I mean:
"As for our clearly adult titles which are meant to help give a good wank, well, those kind of sell themselves once people realize they're there."
And their sales go up with each year, which could suggest growing customer base.
As long as there will be rising trend of people being single and focusing on work rather than eye-to-eye social life, porn industry will be growing. That's almost the same reason why porn games are doing so well in Japan.

Main reason why a lot of games from Japan are considered niche and why West (mostly US) dethroned them from game industry is their own fault. When you ignore global market and focus on your own one, because times change and you struggle, someone will take it. Thanks to that, west set mainstream genres and rest followed. Japan was left behind and their genres become a niche outside of their island. So when you try again on place from which you ran away, your products are now niche, you lost your chance. Some of them are doing fine, but how many of those are now guided by west rather than their own rules?
And exactly same thing is happening in game porn industry.
They have a huge chance, yet they aren't taking it.
Sure, porn games will never be as big as mainstream games, but those can still grown quite huge.
Until people actually seriously look at the market for English language adult games targeted as the West, it's going to remain a niche rather than mainstream.
This, exactly this.
You are 100% right.
Fortunately, same was being said about games a decades ago.
Nowadays? Look at this market :D

Re: Discussion - Now I know why good 3D hentai isn't happening soon.

Limiting the game and it's potential just to make it a safe space for people is dumb. Parent's need to realize that violence is everywhere, your news, schools and your home. "Hey lets paint clothes on Michelangelo's work cause it's naked and the children will see it"

Me telling the shit brain mother "Ma'am, go to hell, if you have children and you know the art isn't appropriate for them, THEN LEAVE!!!!"
