Re: Introduction Thread
I'll add that there was an attempt to change the construction industry and infrastructure (road signs and such) over to metric in the 70's-80's. The citizens of my country vehemently refused the change and since then it's been put on ice.
I've been poking around a bit online as a result of this discussion and I'm finding alot of non-US people that are really unhappy we still use the Imperial system. Why is that?
Fair enough. Why would you use decimals to express something when there's no need to? That's an extra character you need to type for... no reason, really. cm is just the most convenient unit for expressing a person's height since it's about the accuracy you want anyway. Mostly, though, it's just convention.
Still makes the previous statement false. No, there's exactly ONE other country that primarily uses the imperial system.
Wow, that one must've had a lot of dust on it. I'm surprised that CNN has kept an 18 year old article online. Anyway as I've already said, the manufacturing industry (excluding construction materials) and sciences have already switched over to metric. So again, benefits anybody? And there is a benefit. For starters, you avoid incidents likeYou must be registered to see the linksAnd sure, it inconveniences people... in the short term. In the long run, though, using a single standardized system is more convenient for everyone.
