What's new

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

Interesting discussion topic. Personally, I'd rather kickstart a specific project than continually sponsor something, because I like to pay close attention to my spending. So Patreon is unappealing to me. I just want straightforward transactions. And I am slightly concerned about the design incentives it might create.

I'd definitely be willing to preorder games or pay for bonus content. But anything involving ongoing subscriptions or automated deductions probably isn't going to happen.

I feel the same about that, I am very hesitant about pledging towards projects on the pay per content update model as I feel I will end up paying allot more in total than what I would of if I was patient and waited for the finished product to go on sale. There is also the same risk of other crowd funding solutions where the end product may be less than satisfactory for how much you paid.

As for Kyrieru's post on it, I like his idea of using it for merely another way of distributing his games, but what happens if he makes a game worth more than his usual $5 price point? can you kick people off a patreon so they don't end up paying $5 for nothing because they needed to be on a $10 tier to get the game?

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

He talks about thinking of adding content to existing games. I'd gladly give up another 5$ for an Eroico expansion :)

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

As I understand it, Kyrieru has no intention to make games or other content exclusive to Patreon backers.
Patreon isn't Kickstarter, or Offbeatr.
Because of that, if you're looking for "pay X for Y", it's totally unappealing. And it should be.
It could be used for that, sure, but it's not what it's designed for or good at.

In old times, patrons were people throwing money at specific artists so they could eat and have a roof over their head.
In return, you sometimes got stuff they made, but that wasn't the point. The point was "I like your art, so please keep making it and don't starve."

I figure Patreon tries to be the modern incarnation of that. It channels a bit of a Kickstarter vibe, but with less "I get stuff" built in.
If you're on a tight budget and have to pay close attention to how much bang you get for your buck, stay away from Patreon, it will only disappoint you.
It sounds weird, but we're starting to live in an age where a lot of people have more money than absolutely needed to stay alive.
So instead of spending $5 on a fancy coffee every weekend, Patreon gives you the chance of giving your money to an actual artist, rather than a sandwich artist.
But you're not paying to get something. You're periodically donating.

So I'm not too worried about what impact this has on his games.
If it means he can afford a dedicated artist, or more voice bits, it means more and better games for us.
If you're sitting on a pile of disposable income, go help people you like.
If you're keeping a close eye on spending, reap the results but don't contribute.
That's totally okay. Enjoy the ride!

this conversation has made me shift the focus of my patreon to simply helping me keep going instead of funding a specific game

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

Well, when it comes down to it, Patreon would only be good for a couple things,
-Streams/tutorials/game templates
-Adding content to a project that's updated on a monthly basis. For instance, if I made a more sandbox oriented game, and added 2-3 enemies every month.

Of course, none of those are viable, right now.

As for the who pre-order option I mentioned, given that some people have donated for nothing in return, I'd much rather have pre-orders than donations, especially if it means I can make it benefit the consumer in some way. For instance, rather than donating $10 for nothing, the person would get the next three games, regardless of price.

The thing is, something like that doesn't require a Patreon page. I could do it with the same system I currently use to sell games.

So when it comes down to it, I don't think there's much point in doing a Patreon, at the moment. But I thought I'd at least look into it, given how many people email me about it in a week -__-

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

While I don't claim to have concrete knowledge about this, hasn't Patreon been involved with some SJW events that sort of shook the gaming community a bit? If its true, I'm not exactly sure if getting a Patreon account for a hentai-game developer would be a great idea. Especially with the supposed threat of SJWs breathing down our necks.

It's crowdfunding, it probably funded someone somewhere who did a thing. Doesn't mean the whole site is inherently evil.
And I wouldn't call it a "threat", really. Some people throwing a fuss and being loud on the internet. Others being loud in response. What else is new.

A while back, Patreon got into a big tussle with paypal over adult content on the site -
they carefully made a deal where adult pages had to be marked as such, and could be backed only with direct creditcard, not paypal.
That kept paypal their deal "you can give your kid a paypal account and not worry they're buying porn", and still kept patreon functional.
But they never shut down adult pages that I know of, so I'd say they don't mind adultness, so long as it doesn't get their servers shut down.
Heck, if even has a patreon page, pretty much anything we allow here is totally fine on there.

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

Really great game, very hard like Eroico though.

To me, Eroico was harder, and honestly, faster-paced. Maybe I'm wrong, but those jumping segments in Eroico were stuff of nightmares.

Still a good game though.

Yeah I really enjoyed it too, but unfortunately I wasn't able to ever finish it. Way too difficult.

Re: Kyrieru's new game!

If my signature is bothering someone, you have the option of removing signatures as far as I know. I like having my gaming profile up, so if you don't want to see it, remove it.

Your signature is pretty fucking huge and obnoxious, to be fair. If you want your gaming profile up, whatever, but do you really need a gif of a tired meme and an arbitrary quote?

Agreed, nobody should have to disable all sigs just to deal with one selfish douche. Some people actually have entertaining or useful signatures after all.

Might I suggest moving the Dexter GIF to being next to your profile, instead of being underneath it? That would make it much less obnoxious to people (takes up much less vertical screen space, therefore requiring much less scrolling) I think.
Alternatively, removing the GIF would also free up enough vertical space to do the job.

You can probably remove the dexter sig, I mean, is it really necessary? I understand if you want your gaming profile up though.

Yep, but I prefer using keyboard to play :D

Besides, everybody knows it's not the beard on the outside that counts. It's the beard on the inside.

Wow, I found the exact scene haha.

There is a surprising wealth of media about Action Hank available on the internet. Here are some other ones I was considering using, for nostalgia's sake.

PS. Don't worry Kyrieru. Your game being associated with Action Hank can only be a good thing.

(lol sorry nostalgia was too tempting. I will try to stay on topic.)
