This is my point; those are all subjective tastes.
There are many people who would actually enjoy characters that are paper-thin/stereotypes/tropes, for the main character to have zero character development so they can truly take his place, and they may enjoy RNG bullshit and grind-based timesinks because they want to blow/waste time.
In reality, that game might have sold well partially due to those things being in the game and enough people liking them along with everything else you listed.
One of the problems that happens when people get really into a culture, and even moreso when they start making things in that culture (games, music, art, whatever else) is that their tastes generally become richer, more "cultured" as it were, and so it skews their viewpoint on what they feel is objectively good to the majority of people.
For example, a musician might feel that overly complex pieces are superior to extremely basic, repetitive melodies, and they end up being unable to fathom how someone could ever prefer, say, Lil Jon over Buddy Rich.
This is why checking the stats on sales and getting playtesters and focus groups of people who *aren't* (in this case) super experienced at hentai games and especially people who don't make them themselves, is really vital.
Nitpick: strong sales indicate that a game did enough things right.
HuniePop had a negligible amount of HCG, paper-thin characters, no character development for the protagonist, and it hid some of its content behind RNG bullshit or grind-based timesinks. These aren't desirable characteristics for a game.
