Re: [One Minute Reviews] Recommended anime and manga

I think the only issue I ever really have with any anime/manga are the bat-shit insane fans. The ones who pretty much have a raging hard-on the second they hear anything that vaguely reminds them of the anime/manga, and summarily go on to tell you how great it is - no matter how forced into the conversation it is. And if you dare speak the smallest ill of it, they lose their boner and storm off like you just killed Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny right in front of them and their younger siblings. And forced them to drink the blood.

Bleach - I pretty much turn off my brain for the most part when I watch/read it.
Also, I may be reading the manga to stay up-to-date, but I prefer it as an anime.
I was kinda happy, but mostly disappointed when they decided to continue the story.
All I could think was "Really? after ALL THE REST HE'S EARNED (though, being Ichigo, as IF he'd rest), you're going to KEEP GOING? WTFISTHISSHIT"

Naruto - Pretty much the same as Bleach brain-wise.
I like the manga better for the most part.
I swear to gog, the next mother-fucker that says "believe it!" while dressed as Naruto is going to be punted into space.
Also: Chouji is my homeboy.

One Piece - ..... eeehhhh..... never really got into it.
I'll probably go back and read it from the beginning one of these days when I'm bored and want something 'new', but for now, can't really say too much about it.

And now, I really kinda want to go watch Yu-Yu-Hakusho again. For some reason. Totally doesn't have to do with anything else. Not at all.

That's exactly the reason why I'm slowly going off anime. I can't stand those people and it makes me embarrassed to be a part of the fandom with people like that. Sure, every fandom has people like that but from my experience anime is the worst for it.

Yeah, anime has some bad idiots. But that's why I have groups I hang out with to (hopefully) mitigate my chance of meeting them.

I would NEVER go to a con by myself, always go in a group, even if it's just 2-3 other people.

Also glad I found the Anime Club at my college. The current president of the club as well as a couple others are pretty cool people. Sure, there are a few I could care less for as well, but they keep to themselves in the back anyways, so meh.

Heyheyhey, I mostly do that to be ironic. But yes, it's one of two of the series I can honestly say I'd recommend to anyone. The other is Gurren Lagann.

I'd like to comment something regarding the main reason why some mangas are more successful than others despite having more or bigger flaws:

Characters.

People don't just read or watch something for the complexity or how compelling and well written may be the story. A factor that can get people hooked to a fiction piece is the charisma some characters may have for the reader.

Even if a story is gloriously done, if you don't like or don't really care about the characters then you're not going to like it much overall.
However, a manga with a story with many flaws and deus ex machinas but some very likeable characters, it's going to be much more enjoyable for the reader than the case before mentioned.

Which explains how there're some mangas with dull or repetitive or not-so-consistent stories that are loved by so much more people (Ex: The Big 3, Golgo13, Hajime no Ippo, Detective Conan, etc).

It happened to me this week, when reading Planetes, i came to the conclusion that while it's well written and all, i just couldn't give A SINGLE SHIT about the characters, so i got bored of it and stopped reading.
Same thing happened again while reading Osamu Tezuka's Adolf (And i like many of OT's works, Apollo's Song being my favorite).

Then since i was bored i went and checked on MangaStream (Yes, they're shitty and drop awesome mangas like Vinland Saga, but they're fast) and found latest Bleach chapter (since it's the last to be released each week)...

and shat a brick

Not that Sakura's life being in danger isn't at least a bit interesting, but that twist wasn't nearly as much an impact as Bleach 448's 2 last pages. Holy fucking shit.
That alone created more expectative in me to see what's going to happen next than the couple of volumes i've read of OT's Adolf and pretty much half of Planetes combined. Hell, it's possibly one of the most tension ridden moments since Aizen's pepsiman mode fight.

And of course such expectative isn't due Urahara's plotting shit behind people's backs (like if that was a surprise), but the involvement of Ichigo's dad and possibly Rukia (Both awesome very likable characters) into something that's probably going to crush the protagonist's dream
If it weren't by characters like these, especially Rukia which is my favorite Big 3 character, i wouldn't even bother reading Bleach. And because of them, i'm waiting anxiously the next chapter.

The thing is, character's charisma is something very arbitrary and subjective to the reader's preference, so it's hard to include on a review since it's a hit or miss factor.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Apollo's Song - Subgenres: Psychological, Angst - 5 STARS

A story about love, madness and hatred.

Chances are you're going to both like it and hate it.

Onani Master Kurosawa - Subgenres: Drama, School Life, Psychological - 5 STARS

"This is a story of mistakes, redemption, and the choices made in between. It contains the very worst and best of the human condition." That's a very good description for this manga.
Do not get fooled, the manga starts as a bizarre revenge fantasy, but then it gets serious and quite deep. Dwells into isolation, bullying, egocentrism, despise for the others, bad decisions and hatred.

Note: I guess it wouldn't be a far assumption to think some of these subjects might hit home to many of you as well, after all, we're on a god damn forum about cartoon porn. That's it, hope this manga gives you some constructive introspection.

Re: [One Minute Reviews] Recommended anime and manga

It sounds like Life sort of Krim. It's a pretty dark manga series about this school girl who is for lack of a better term, Emo and is bullied by the rich/pretty/popular girls in her school and is put through a lot of bad shit and has cut herself in the past. Like I said it's a rather dark shoujou manga that sounds a lot like the one you just posted.

I've read a very similar manga by the same mangaka (Suenobu Keiko) called Vitamin . But i didn't like how unrealistic it's her extremely sudden character development change, like a switch from complete emo pussy to total badass. It's just too unreal.

Not that the premise of Kurosawa about fapping isn't bizarre and unrealistic, but at least there're shades of grey and better throught character development.
Vitamin's development and it's happy ending seems too forced in my opinion.

brb reading Life, will review later.

Just saw the last volumes and read the ending
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Life - Subgenres: Drama, Crime, Psychological, School Life - 1 STAR

A story about a bullied girl and crazy bitches.
The moral of the story is that bullying is a very serious issue and that being a murderous sociopath ultimately leads to an unhappy life.
The reason it got 1 star is because for moments it is just too exaggerated and there're some HUMONGOUS plotholes, and because Manami's rage never had a basis to start with since she never gave a shit about Katsumi yet she went full yandere psycho out of fucking nowhere later on. And Ayumu and Shi-chan's friendship didn't mean anything, so why did Ayumu go full emo?
It's awfully written

Hokuto no Ken - Subgenres: Action, Fighting - 4 STARS

Opening:
One of the piooners of fighting manga.
Imagine a hack of Mad Max with insane instant kill martial art styles starred by a mix of Bruce Lee and Sylvester Stallone: What you get is aAAAAAAATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATA AAAATAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! You're already dead.
In HnK's apocalyptic world some people have a lifetime supply of steroids and melee weapons (Yet guns are very scarce), and the hero, who represents the king of moral, or at least as moral as someone could be in a post fallout scenario. In spite of being from 1984, it has aged well and it's still one of the best action mangas out there.

Queen's Blade Rebellion

The third season of Queen's Blade. A fun and semi serious-light hearted fantasy action series set in the fictional world of Gainos. IIRC it takes place somewhat three years after the first two seasons, where Claudette has taken the throne after Leina has defeated the previous Queen Aldora. It centers around a beautiful Princess Knight, Anolette Kruetz who at first sets off to get revenge on the Queen for sieging her kingdom. Along the way she meets several new beautiful warriors who support her quest and seek to dethrone the Queen.

The characters are fun and interesting enough, though if anyone is familiar with the first two seasons, they should know this series is heavy on the fanservice. Though I personally don't feel it detracts from the quality of the series itself. Without giving away any spoilers, I will personally say that I found the ending a little lacking and unresolved. Overall a decent 12 episode series to watch for time killing. I give it 80 points.

Old thread? is it okay to post? I love manga. Books and fruit alike.
-----------------------------------------
SHINIGAMI-SAMA TO 4-NIN NO KANOJO - 5 stars
Genre - Comedy, Harem, Fantasy

Yes yes, a Harem where 99% of it you can predict who the MC will end up with, 0% to the childhood friend and 100% to the girl that shows up in the cover of the manga.
Its a dark, funny, manga. Emotions are perfectly drawn. Makes you feel pressured too. Highly recommended for someone who likes a harem manga with unpredictable results.

Has a yandere, an intelligent, a tsundere, and an emotionless one.
All 4 dont know that their boyfriend are the same.

MC is not a bad guy actually, he just got forced by this girl below. A Shinigami.

Would you believe it? Comedy! Romance!

Re: [One Minute Reviews] Recommended anime and manga

I post this knowing full well that I'm beating a dead horse.

I'm a fanboy for One Piece. Always been, still am. But the other two can burn. I say this as a guy who has kept up with the anime and manga of Naruto until deep into the great war arc and who has watched most of the Bleach anime and still reads the manga...they are exceedingly painful in their own ways.

That said, I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Baccano! or Monster. Both five stars in my book.

Monster-

Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a renowned young brain surgeon of Japanese descent working in Europe. Highly lauded by his peers as one of the great young minds that will revolutionize the field, he is blessed with a beautiful fiancé and is on the cusp of a high promotion in the hospital he works at. However, all of that is about to change with one critical decision that Dr. Tenma faces one night—whether to save the life of a young child or that of the town's mayor. Despite being pressured by his superiors to perform surgery on the mayor, his morals force him to perform the surgery on the young child, saving his life and forfeiting the mayor's. All of a sudden, Dr. Tenma's world is turned upside down by his decision leading to the loss of everything he previously had. A doctor is taught to believe that all life is equal; however, when a series of murders occur in the vicinity of Dr. Tenma, all of the evidence pointing to the young child who he saved, Tenma's beliefs are shaken.

Baccano!-

During the early 1930s in Chicago, the transcontinental train, Flying Pussyfoot, is starting its legendary journey that will leave a trail of blood all over the country. At the same time in New York, the ambitious scientist Szilard and his unwilling aide Ennis, are looking for missing bottles of the immortality elixir. In addition, a war between the mafia groups is getting worse. On board the Advena Avis, in 1711, alchemists are about to learn the price of immortality.

Both have great English voice acting too. I value Monster for that highly because of how long it is.

Re: [One Minute Reviews] Recommended anime and manga

I've had Monster recommended to me. CB, I think, is more interested it in than I am, but have heard really good things about it.

I have an disc or two of Baccano!, just haven't gotten around to checking it out yet. Trying to think if there's anything currently I'm reading that I'd recommend. Being the yaoi fangirl that I am, they've restarted Amano's Crimson Spell, which has a lot of fun with fantasy tropes. Art's gorgeous and you do feel for the main character, Vlad, who's sort of caught between a rock and a hard place (no innuendo intended.) Just finished volume 3 (the new one) and am immediately distrustful of the newly introduced character, so we'll have to see where that one goes.
