(Open to New Players) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

At the mention of honor, the drow rolled her eyes, but she kept silent long enough for the woman to talk herself into the idea anyway.

'We have all the information we needed,' went Kethanua's thoughts in Talia's head once Weiss had finished grilling the mayor. It was almost like hearing her voice. Almost. 'You can wrap up with the crowd, and I'll fill you in on the way out of town.'

Then, as a literal afterthought, 'Nice job.'

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

Well, that took care of the mob. Talia didn't show any outward signs of acknowledging the drow's praise save for a barely noticeable nod, but she swiftly moved on to finish dealing with the mob. "That's right, we'll take care of this. You can go to your homes now and rest assured that this will be over soon." She spoke, urging them to disperse. "Just leave it to us."

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"Horray! The heroes will take care of everything!" they cheered, before going back to their tasks.

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

Kat sighed, and had to bite back a growl. Man, these civilians were sheep. Seriously. Whatever. "Well then, we should probably go off and find these lizardpeople. Let's get going."

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

(Going for Persuasion here. Lyra's trying to just take a gentle approach with all this:

Vylrya spoke her words as persuasively as she could but it seemed her companions were making better gains then she was and the crowd was quite persuaded to let them do the heavy lifting and dirty work so they didn't have to risk any of their people in the attempt. And the best part of all, the mayor saved face in front of everyone and seemed the stronger leader for it. All in all, a good day so far. Hopefully this luck would hold for the near future. "Now that that's done...would you perhaps know where the lizard people would be located? Figure it must be nearby if they're capturing people from this town. Have other towns had people gone missing or are there really not that many nearby to talk to?"

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"She said the unsafe place to go was east of here, so I think we just head that direction and act as both bait and trap," Kethanua reminded her. She paused a moment to look around, then turned back to Lyra with a frown.

"But how do you work out which way is east without lodestone veins to steer you?"

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"You try to watch the sun." Kat said to the drow, and looked up, trying to judge from where the sun's position was and the time, which way was east.

(Survival roll: 11+2 = 13)

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

The mayor was silent for a while, she looked at the heroes as if they were a bunch of children trying to play hero as they... Seemed to fail spectacularly, Kat of all things having to think about which way was east. The mayor pointed a finger in a particular direction. "That way... That way is east. In this part of the world the sun's eastern angle is different than where you're pointing..." she said hesitantly.

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"Damnit, Kat. If you needed t know where to go you should have just said something to me first. I'm a Ranger for goodness sake." She walked over to her friend and gave her a tap on the forehead. "Goddess you make me worry far too much sometims, you know that? What am I going to do with you?"

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"I'm a barbarian, I smash things. Not look smart." Kat groused. "Now lets just go solve this problem. Whatever! Go!"

Kat promptly marched off to the east in a huff. Otherwise she may have been tempted to cleave the mayor in two and that wasn't a 'good guy' thing to do.

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

Before the dogbold charged off to the east, Weiss tried her best to hold Kat back. ''W-Wait… we shouldn’t charge off into the enemy territory, without knowing anything. T-They probably outnumber us ten to one, if not more, and if they see us as intruders, who knows what will happen to us.'' Weiss said, before taking some time to think about the situation and come up with a plan. If they wanted more information, they probably have to ask the lizard folk themselves, and Weiss might’ve an idea that could work. ''I-It might be better if we catch one of them first, perhaps one of us can borrow a suit of armor, and pretend to be a guard while the others hide. Then, when they come to kidnap the one in disguise, we can ambush and capture them.'' Weiss proposed.

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"Why bother with a disguise?" Talia shrugged. "You really think they'll be picky about whom they're going to attack or no? If we want to just capture and interrogate one, all we really need is to simply go out there and find one. It's not like they'll suddenly avoid us or anything just because we don't look like city guards. Hell, a city guard away from town all alone would look suspicious as Hell. We might as well move out already."

"That being said..." The tiefling sighed, looking at Kat. Grumbling under her breath, she moved to catch up to her. "Barbarian or no, a smart barbarian would know better than to go off half-cocked. We're going into hostile territory that we don't know all that well. Chances are there are traps on the way. Would it kill you to exercise a modicum of patience and forethought before you do something that might get you caught and make you a liability?"

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

Kethanua gave the mayor a grim smile and a quick nod before hurrying after the others. She caught up just as Kat was getting her (perhaps justified) tongue lashing.

"Enough, already! We are dealing with an enemy whose principal strategy is to turn former allies into enemies, as you obviously know. I'm not thrilled about coddling anyone's wounded pride, either, but we do not need to start their work for them." As she spoke, she took a thin rope off her pack and tied a loop in one end about half a foot wide. Her image grew hazy, shimmering like a mirage, and a wash of scales spread over her face. By the time she had stuck both wrists through the loop and twisted the loose end around to obscure how bound she wasn't, her hair had vanished and a spiny frill drooped sadly from the back of her head.

"Now somebody take over marching your hostage along. If we're going to use a disguise, it should be one that gives our quarry a false estimate of their numbers advantage, not a trained fighter. "

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"And how exactly is this supposed to help?" Talia sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Unless at least one lizard was captured and they're aware of it, this likely won't work. If they're confident none of theirs went missing, they'll just laugh us off." The tiefling shook her head. "Honestly, why do you people fixate on us having to use bait? Hell, why do you fixate on laying down a trap BEFORE scouting out the terrain? Priorities! First we need to take a look at their stomping grounds and find any places where we could potentially prepare an ambush, THEN get to planning one. Let's not give up the element of stealth too soon. For now, they're likely still unaware of our presence here. If we keep it that way, they can't plan around us."

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"It sounds as though your plan is to slowly and cautiously enter a large area of hostile terrain where the enemies we are concerned about have the experience of natives, relying on our approach and alertness to catch the traps you are certain await us,"Kethanua said, still not changing back. "Correct me if I'm wrong. Because the other plan seems to be to slowly and cautiously enter that terrain, stay on high alert for ambushes, and also maintain some form of gambit to take advantage of any opportunity that arises to seize initiative back."

She dispelled her illusion at that point and slipped one hand out of the rope to plant it on her hip. "I'm open to better gambits, but the second plan seems more complete, on the whole. Is there some reason why deception necessarily compromises stealth or scouting?"

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"What I'm trying to say is that it's pointless to attempt an ambush before getting a lay of the land first." Talia pinched the bridge of her nose, fighting her frustration. "Figure out what sort of place it is, if there are any obvious and non-obvious paths leading into it, which ones are in use." She looked at the drow. "In case you've missed this, those lizards had to launch attacks to capture people. Small raids, probably, likely preceeded by scouts. Wouldn't it be simpler to find which paths they use to move in and out of their turf, then set an ambush there? And even if we can't find anyone to catch, any paths the lizards use can't be trapped to the point of being impassable since they're in use. And gambits only work if you have understanding of the enemy's mentality. Do you have it?"

The tiefling paused, then frowned. "Come to think of it, was your disguise even accurate? Have you ever seen a lizardperson?"

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"I'm with the idea that we should just go hunt down one of them and go from there. Trying to wait around for them to try to kidnap one of us sounds like something that's bound to not work due to them like, attacking the other side of the town or something." Kat add into the conversation.

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

''I-I don’t get why you’re so against the idea, perhaps you didn’t understand what I meant, one of us will simply pretend to guard the town, and from what I gathered, they’re mainly kidnapping the guards. W-We don’t have to enter their lands at all, and fight them in their territory, because fighting in the swamps could end disastrous, instead we simply have one of us dress up as a male guard and capture the lizard folk when they come to raid. T-Though, if you’re really against this idea, I-I won’t mention it again, and we should probably go into the swamp and try to capture a scouting party.'' Weiss tried to explain to Talia before shifting her attention to Kat. ''A-And I would appreciate if we kept them alive, we don’t want to sour the relation between the lizard folk and humans even more.''

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

"Because waiting for them to come to us involves leaving the initiative to them." Talia sighed. "If they come to us with intent to capture, we can expect heavy fighting even if we set up an ambush. But if we take this to them, and hit them where they don't expect to be hit, we'll have an easier time fighting. Hell, if we're entering their territory, we don't even have to target warriors, no?" She pointed out. "Though yeah, we should probably try and not kill them outright. If they can be reasoned with, that could save us a lot of trouble."

Re: (Open) Dungeons and Depravity: Revenge of the Unchained

Laya listened to the arguments back and forth, sighing a bit and leans against the wall, writing in her notes again.

"If I may. Learning the lay of the land might be useful. This town has been here awhile. So maybe someone has made a map of the region if you ask around? It might not tell us where the lizardfolk live but it could at least give us a starting point to figure out what we're doing, yes? Because standing and arguing is not getting us anywhere. Let's pick a course and do it."
