Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

Preeeeetty much. Magus can do obnoxious amounts of damage. Mostly the problem is making sure you aren't beaten by electricity immunity but that's where versatility comes in.

Arcane Mark is another offensive powerhouse for Magus. I am not kidding.

Eh, Nothing beats the muscle mage.

I miss playing Jeska.

'A cast inflict major wounds with ma sword. If that don't work A'ma try diplomacy* instead'

*The name of her Greataxe

Jeska seems a popular name for people with greataxes. I have one too.

Course, mines a barbarian rather than muscle mage.

Well, I've had mine for almost 9 years, so calling dibs. Based on Jeska from MTG..

and yeah, mine's Barbarian too. Its all in the mentality. People call Jeska battlecrazy. She is convinced that every one else is crazy.

You did get Shoryuken'd by solid rock with arms the size of your entire body.

Unrelatedly, lost interest in the 1on1 or missed it?

Oh derp, I did indeed miss it. XD

Also, true true, just didn't expect something this early to be able to practically 2 shot me.

Better now than when it counts. Sure, I could spawn a bunch of easily dealt with medium elementals instead, but thats no way to gauge a difficulty courve and you might end up losing against a guy I really don't want you to lose against. :p

Also not meaning to double post, but after looking at the rest of the conversation above, Lena right now rolls a 2d6+4 with her main hand weapon and 1d8+4, so assuming I could land good hits with both weapons, I could deal some pretty decent damage, despite the fact it has its damage reduction, I think. That is of course, assuming Lena can land an attack with both weapons, of course.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

I can break it down pretty much on eyeballing.

The Elemental is a little atypical because of the DR 5/- and earthglide. Against enemies who don't have DR they'll probably get blendered very swiftly by the sheer number of attacks the party can output.

However, the lack of primary arcane caster means there are many things we simply cannot solve on our own. Thus we will have to rely on more consumables and improvisation to get by on several things, and we're missing several staple buffs, at least until the Magus picks them up.

For example, lack of easy access to alternative movement abilities means they are very difficult to handle. We also have way less crowd control options meaning swarms, or just many weak foes, like said earth elementals could be an real threat if they coordinated enough and utilized their environment. We lack sweeps until I can get ahold of Holy Word. Though I'll need to set some protections on the evil members of the party prior to using it.

Also for the record, MF, 2d6+4 is an average roughly of 11. So about 6 damage a hit. Elementals, particularly earths, have huge health pools. We won't kill it before it kills us.

I could use the elemental gem and attempt to use that but it being of larger size puts odds against us still. I think Dismissal is the way that will have less overall casualties.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

We can all outrun it and just take potshots at it with ranged attacks, when it shows itself, but then again, that would take forever. As much damage as it did in one shot to me, that's our only real option other than retreating, and hoping that coming back with Dismissal works.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

It can just earthglide is the problem, meaning it can approach without us hitting it. If it does pursue us, we bring it to Everfrost and let the ghost kill it. It can't do anything to a ghost, and a ghost can do everything to it. Plus it can't earthglide through ice. Can't earthglide through ice... Hm. I wonder if I could... This will take some research, but always good to have a plan b.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

Yah, I'm thinking we retreat for now and either lure it with us, which I doubt would happen, or come back later with your Dismissal spell.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

In the interest of saving time, its not pursing far. It seems to be stationed as a guardian.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

So assuming we run, is the plan to somehow get a dismissal spell or are we paying off the drow with our gear?

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

Yeah, waiting for you to plan that out before responding, I think.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

Alright, adjusting the campaign difficulty now. First fight with me never counts to help the players get a feel for their characters and the system. FYI, I don't expect fights, beyond some bossfights, to go beyond 5 rounds ever, so this was quick but not super unusual.. its just the nature of forum rpz.

Next fight will be easier but might have moar consequences if you get defeated.

Assume Lena stable at half hitpoints with a nonlethal knockout from the earth elemental that has mostly healed.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

Standard combats last about 3. Historically speaking, they can go a very very long time in my experience depending on the fight. No arcane caster means there are some common spells that can make fights drag out.

Invisibility is the big one, so I'll have to invest heavily in Invisibility Purge, since there;s no such thing as a Potion of See Invisibility.

Everyone but Blues character managed to Dr Zoidberg the fyck out of Dodge, right?

I can pretty much freely control the length of a battle by setting the spawner up right, or giving conclusions (Like I did right now) early. I'm a fan of spawns that surrender or try to flee when dropped under 1/3rd and in an erotic campaign capture goes over kill anyway. Usually 2-3 rounds is a good estimate, yeah, though minibosses will happily go 4-5 and full on bosses can go quite a while.

@Tenta: Lena not Dasyra got captured

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

I've always found it unusual how everyone seems so ready to fight to the death in dnd yeah. I mean soldiers and zealots are one thing but everyone? Seemed weird to me.

Either way, for now preparations for round 2. Swapping out Airwalk and GMW for Dismissal and Ardor's Onslaught, Invisibility Purge swapped in from Dispel Magic (Just remembered Animate Deads a domain spell and I gave up my other for, well, another thing that animates dead so no swapping :p) and Ironskin swapped in for Desecrate.

Re: Trapped in the Underdark ~ Out of Character discussion

You sneaky fucker, and here I was expecting something a little worse to happen. You have surprised me, in a very good way good sir GM. :3
