There are memory scrolls for which you see the story (located in one of the menus, under play memories like what Denmu said),
and a spell scrolls (located inside your inventory) which you used to blast the hell out on the field.
So far, the memory scrolls doesn't interfere with your game progress, though reading it can change a wee bit of your gaming experience.
The idea of making up your ideal equipment defers on your play style and what the situation demands. For insance, if you wanna focus on fighting Black Goat alone for its inscription or essence, you might as well prepare Athame knife with beast-slay+ lighting essence. If you wanna fight against Wild Hunt and Dragger only in first stage, then just prepare the right equipment for that. If you are talking about general equipment, that would be vague, though in my opinion, you might want to consider at which point in the game that you kept dying and from what, and build your general equipment to counter that.
Most of dual wielding damage depend on weapon base damage + 100%Str like athame knife and sword breaker, while some depend on weapon base damage + 70%Str + 40% Dex.
Insane STR build would be double edge, since all buffs that involve STR build have high consequences (like Bondage gears to binding, Blute inscribe to Futa which invite fatal ejaculation). So if you wanna go with insane STR build as your general build, you need a counter measure (like Arachnid inscription to counter binding, and perhaps Vine inscription for stopping ejaculation though I don't use it myself).
Long rage usually depends on Dex, and since I don't use long range, I can't give any pointers.

Perhaps this is a bit late to the party, but I figure that it could be useful for those who are still playing this. If the lack of a voice for Roland (I think that's her name, anyway) is bothersome to you, you can lift the voice files from the Dungeons and Prisoners demo and use those instead. It isn't perfect, but it at least alleviates the silence a bit.
It can take a bit of poking around to figure out how to get it to work, so here's a picture of how I currently have it set up:

Have been using voices from 女戦士監禁, not perfect but the delays and stuff are adjusted. backup your Sav_Voice.rvdata in case you don't like it.

The trial version hasn't been updated for a while, so don't bother and buy or download the game from elsewhere.
I never tried the trial so I have no idea how to get the English interface working, but it works on the full game.
As for futa, you need to get raped by Dame Verte that's all.
Also, anyone got some support for this error? I was diddling around The Catacombs and the shroom hits me with this error. For some background information, it's a restart, Extreme Hardmode, all patches up-to-date.

Get the latest version of the game and make sure this file is in the patch folder.

If your version isn't the most up-to-date one released on the 30th of August, then the patch won't work.
Aside from that, playing the game with the usual settings for Japanese games turned on usually sorts things out. I can't remember if the daylight savings bug has been fixed in the latest version, but sometimes I even have to switch time zones to take out a few bugs.
Since the game hasn't been updated in over a year, it's probably safe to say that the creator has either abandoned the project or on a long hiatus. If it's a bug for that particular monster and that particular dungeon, probably best to avoid the area altogether.

It throws the same error with the latest version hot off DLSite and with patches as well, probably something with enabling Extreme mode, since it doesn't happen without it on.
And man, poor guy, if he got a patreon I'd be willing to donate for his health. This game's been a hell of a ride.

Okay, sorry for the very late reply. I got that error as well when I get hit by the Mushroom Trap skills. But somehow, one way or another, I didn't get it anymore.
Like Harley said, get the latest version of the game, buy it or download it (I used 30th August 2015).
Assuming you get the actual latest version, put on the latest 4 patches inside the patch file (both September and November 2015 has two). If not, then try putting all available patches inside.
Different version of the game may have different bugs, one of the older version have a no-upgrade-bug, another one have the death-bug, and another is no-English-Interface-On-Easy-Starting-bug.

There's one more patch from 2016, June 1st.
Although it appears to just be a minor bugfix for "undefined method `male?' for nil:NilClass", whatever that means in codespeak.
