Re: The Ranting/Debate Thread

Pretty sure they're just trolling for traffic. It's kind of a thing lately, staff writers posting obviously inflammatory stories just to get people to visit and go "WTF is this noise?".

If so, I have to give them a nod and a "well-played," because I posted that shit on facebook.

and I haven't logged on to facebook in like three months

I suppose it's that mentality "any attention is good attention."

I almost wish that they catch some flak for this. I know I won't be looking into the magazine anymore as long as the writer is there. This kind of shit should not fly.

I see a lot of stupidity in internet/magazine media these days. And for some reason, within the gaming community it seems to be all the more prominent.

Then there's Fox News. I suddenly don't feel so bad about Gaming Media anymore.

I've not listened to anything from Fox News since their Mass Effect fiasco years back... and before that I didn't listen simply because I had Canadian news sources.

I believe the most recent Fox News madness is an anchor being upset that the new Spiderman is black. Of course, failing to mention that this was in an alternate universe, that original Spiderman is still white, and that both are fictional characters. Also failing to mention why in god's name Fox news suddenly gives a shit about comic books.

Because everyone thinks actual news is BORING. Wars, deaths, famine and pestilence never really generate news as much as 'superstar dies from overdose after failing to go to rehab'

You mean the "Xbox 360 Orgy-fest OMG Alien Sex 9001" game? I'm not familiar with this other... 'Mass Effect' of which you speak.

Re: The Ranting/Debate Thread

Only a small rant, buuuuuut.....

Ya know, looking through the list of supporters... some of them I just don't understand what their stake in it is. It's like they're supporting it either just to be assholes, or because they were told to support it.
The supporters that sell goods that you MUST have a physical copy of (clothes, perfume, etc.) will most likely only end up hurting themselves more than help anything at all.
Then there are the groups like the CWA that I get the feeling they were told to support it. That, or they're just ignorant, which normally I can tolerate, but there is no room for ignorance when it comes to SOPA/PIPA - which a great deal of Congress has proven, as many of them have NO FUCKING IDEA HOW THE FUCKING INTERNET FUCKING WORKS.
FUCK.

Re: The Ranting/Debate Thread

I hate it when I correct somebody on a common spelling error, and they shrug it off, or even get offended, saying, "Nbdy cares its the intrnet!!".

WRONG. I care, and for a damn good reason too. When you type and spell out words incorrectly, haphazardly shooting out these abbreviations that you've gotten so used to, you develop habitual skills in typing out in that particular method of speech. (Though I dread to call such a thing a "skill".) So as you speak that way over the internet more and more, you reinforce the generally accepted method of speaking or spelling that way, both in yourself and others.

This process is how language changes, and simplifying the language you think in simplifies your thinking process'. Lacking flexibility of thought and speech negatively impacts your ability to think and speak, and this process that so many people are encouraging, affects the entire English-Speaking world, and to a lesser capacity (On the internet) other languages, that are equally as beautiful to speak and listen to. Please don't dumb down languages, it's a horrible thing to do.

And to further my point, constantly practicing correct spelling, accepting it personally when other people correct you (Only if they're right, of course, try to double check if you have doubts.) and complicating the sentences, paragraphs, and potential stories you type out, can only make you better at writing, and thinking, in English, or any other language you speak. Garnering experience in typing this way is a valuable skill to have, and it's honestly not that fucking difficult.

There was a point in time when the amount of words commonly used in the English language were quadruple the amount they currently are. People spoke to each other much, much more, and did it well. The places of socializing on the internet could be a chance to redeem the social standard of being well-spoken, if it weren't for the lazy want for typing just that one second quicker. I just really hope that humanity can retain the ability to speak to each other with varied flavours and contexts, rather than devolving into snorts, grunts and "no u"s.

So please, people. Learn to fucking spell, or I will goddamn correct you. WHENEVER, THE FUCK, I WANT.

PS: If I have miss-spelled anything within this rant, please do tell me, I appreciate it.

PPS: I hurriedly typed out this rant to vent, if my speech seems splayed out or jumbled I apologize.

Isn't it supposed to be AFFECT, not EFFECT?

And I'm pretty sure you meant to put in WERE instead of WHERE.

Pretty sure you don't need the hyphen in misspelled, it being its own word.

Re: The Ranting/Debate Thread

So I read my rep thingy.

Are you certain that affect isn't a better word for that statement? If I remember correctly, effect as a verb was for when it was to produce something. You know, I effected the smell because of my fart. Affect was leaving an influence on something. So that'd be like my fart affected the smell of the room.

Assuming that you are trying to state that the way how imformally people speak on the internet will leave a negative impact on the existing English laungage, wouldn't that be more of an influence? Because by following your context with effect (in my perspective) it would mean that people not spelling correctly would produce an English language.

Now, I'm not entirely sure on this. If I am wrong, I would love to be corrected. I don't have too much faith in my English speakingness, so don't be mad if I am wrong about this.

Re: The Ranting/Debate Thread

Affect: To have an influence on.
Effect: The result of an influence.

When you affect something, you have an effect on it.

...this process that so many people are encouraging effects the entire English-Speaking world
You're talking about having an influence on something, so affect is the correct word to use here.

Re: The Ranting/Debate Thread

While I did ask for corrections on spelling, and I do appreciate it, I can't say I'm happy about it being the only form of feedback that I've gotten. If I just wanted people to correct me I would have written about something less relevant, like the growth rate of turkeys.

At least that way annoying twats wouldn't give me flack out of their want to defend the way they spell "you" without y or o.
