Re: A rant about gaming.

... I know it doesn't work out that way, but that's not the developers fault, and they shouldn't have to hold back what they want to do, due to bad parenting on the game.

But the point needed to be blunt, like a sledgehammer.

Re: A rant about gaming.

It kind of reminds me of Final Fantasy VII. Most people hate it because it's so popular.
I hate it because it's bad. That, and the fanbase is probably the #1 worst I've ever seen. From fanboys to cosplayers to basement dwellers arguing about how much better it is that OoT.

I just hate how they keep milking the franchise, and I especially hate how people keep buying into said milking.

Go Sacred!
I don't understand this comment =(

Sinfulwolf is either referring to the videogame Sacred or Sacred II.

Re: A rant about gaming.

I'm afraid I disagree with the very core of your argument alias.

I don't see the need for any good storyline / character development to make a game great (although of course in many cases this will make the game much better).

1:20 - 1:35 is my opinion summed up very nicely.

"But but nahtzee I need a reason for what I'm doing, motivation for my character, a backstory!"
"Would you really need a backstory to play Donkey Kong, you twat? How about football, or poker? If the process of playing a game isn't fun for you, then maybe you're not a gamer!"

Of course I do agree that games should try to be more original, but that really isn't going to stop me getting every Advance Wars, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Trauma Center, Legend of Zelda, Touhou and Smash Bros. title out there, because they fucking rock.

Re: A rant about gaming.

Heh. Weird thing is, I actually agree with you and that video. Mostly. I guess I'm just not very good at putting my thoughts down on paper. I guess I think there are two types of good games - those with challenge, that you just play for fun, and those that you play to sort of get into an interactive book.

FYI, I love Touhou, I've won a couple Smash Bros tournaments, Mario Kart, and am a die-hard LoZ fan. My introduction to my obsession with games came from Pokemon.

I didn't like AW though. Ever play Fire Emblem? It's like AW, except with a compelling story and wonderful characters. This, to me, makes Fire Emblem = AW^3.

Storyline isn't something that devs shouldn't worry about, even to put all their focus on making it fun. Many of the RPG gamers out there like the experience of playing through a book-like story, and in some cases, choosing your own path in the story (a la Bioware's games, KotOR, that martial arts one set in ancient China whose name I can't remember, etc). Because some people have fun that way, by interacting with the story.

On the other hand, you could say that this viewpoint justifies making games like Halo 13 and CoD over nine fucking thousand because some gamers have "fun" staring at all the pretty graphics. My response to that is: Fuck you graphic whores. *flips the bird*

Edit: As a side note, I love how he draws the attention to the retardedness of the accent he speaks in.

I've played most of them, and still prefer Advance Wars. Possibly because I much prefer multiplayer games. Also I just like the whole "prodcution and city capture, then back to square one for the next game" style more than characters that you keep throughout a game and level up. It was also a lot easier to break the single player in Fire Emblem by grinding those squares with infinite enemies and you win money (I forget now what they were called - colliseums maybe?).

Also I feel that the gameplay in AW is a lot more diverse, there are a lot more completely different legitimate tactics (artillery spam and mech parade immediately come to mind), some that counter others - while in Fire Emblem it's more about "choose a diverse team, beat the enemies and progress to the capture point", with a few levels with slightly different win criteria.

It's like AW, except with a compelling story and wonderful characters. This, to me, makes Fire Emblem = AW^3.
For me, gameplay >>>> storyline / character rubbish. Not that I skip past cutscenes or don't read dialogue, but the storylines of the fire emblem games I've played did nothing for me.

All my favourite games bar Final Fantasy 8 made little to no attempt at a good storyline, but I couldn't care less.

Also we should play Brawl wifi sometime. Unless you're a melee-only smasher.

Re: A rant about gaming.

Well, different strokes for different folks. I can respect your preference for AW even though I don't feel the same way =D

And yeah I think it was coliseums. Or arenas. Or something like that. Me, I just never went for them. Have you played the newer ones, for GC and Wii? I'm an addict for progression of characters, which is why I love RPG-style type games, so that I can see them unleash cooler and cooler powers (also one reason I prefer FE to AW, in AW there was no progression... you just had what you had at the start and it never changed or got better). The main character in the GC one was fucking god. I've gone with just him in the last level (hardest level) on the hardest difficulty setting and solo'd the entire level with just him. It was awesome. Granted, not very fun except for the first time novelty and being able to say "Ike can solo entire maps," but for that first time, that was hella fun.

I have Brawl, but I suck with it. It's sort of like going from CS 1.6 to Source. The timing, the engine, everything's just a little bit different, so where in melee I was a tournament-level player, now I get regularly beaten by friends that used to be unable to beat me 3v1 with no ff. Also, for some reason whenever I go online, it lags for about a half second, making the whole thing unplayable for me.

Still. Ike, that incredibly overpowered character from the GC fire emblem being in Brawl? I would have gotten it if that was the only good thing it had going for it. I also like the new version of Marth (I was a Marth player in my melee days) and Olimar is fun to fuck around with.

Re: A rant about gaming.

Well Marth is my main so I hear you there.

I have been playing Melee since its release and picked up Brawl on its release, so I'm pretty pro at both, although I'd bet you'd beat me at melee while I'd school you at Brawl since i've focused on that for the last year.

Also I find that it's easy to play melee and then play brawl straight after, but oh so difficult to play brawl and then try to play melee. Huh.

Having said that, when all the pro melee players at the tournaments I go to try and play a brawl friendly, they always start swearing because they can't help but instinctively try and wavedash.

And lol Ike. I FIGHT FOR MY FRIENDS awesomeface.png

Re: A rant about gaming.

I won all my tournaments before wavedash was discovered haha, so I never really got into it. But even so, brawl just seems a tidbit slower than melee, I never really got used to it. Then and again I don't really play it a lot anymore.

ahaha my old roommate was so funny with that, he'd get so pissed that I kept beating him with ike and spoof it in a retard voice, so funny to hear this quiet, mousy kid bust out with "I fight for my friends" and facepalm.

Although the best part of Ike is is taunt spamming.

HRRRUUUNGGGHH!! HRRRUUUNGGGHH!!! HRRRUUUNNNNGGHHH!!!

STFU IKE!!

HRRUUUUNNNGGHHH!! HRRRUUUUNNNGGHHH!!! GREAT ETHERRRR!!!

Omg....

I was refering to Sacred 1. I just borrowed it from a friend and am having plenty of fun with it.

Wait... wait.... wait...

Wait...

Why the FUCK would anyone compare it to OoT?
That makes NO sense.
That's like me comparing Warcraft and Dynasty Warriors.

You've been to GameFAQs right? They have a Best Game Ever contest and FF7 vs OoT is always the end result. The first time round, FF7 won. This year, OoT won.

Bah. OoT was awesome when it came out - hell, it still is - but the best game is Duke Nukem Forever.

Re: A rant about gaming.

Unfortunately, Chrono Trigger beats all 3 of those games' asses.

Although I haven't played any of the Duke Nukems. I probably should.

Am I crazy for having enjoyed Majora's Mask better than OoT?
