Re: Games Discussion Thread

Gotta say I'm sceptical of that. Not even played God of War before, but I know fictional universes can get pretty crazy. I'm sure there are plenty of non god characters out there that would put him to shame.
Video games are like comic books in this respect: You can argue basically anything so long as you are willing to find a way. Kratos can beat anyone in a realm of magic and gods, but are these abilities effected in normal realms? Or realms with different magics? Are they weakened, strengthened, removed, inverted, etc? Who's hell will he go to if he dies? Can he claw his way out of that one as well? Has he gotten so used to climbing out of hell that he's lost his sense of self-preservation? If your argument is simply "he's pretty badass" then any number of characters are up for the running based entirely on the opinions of the person imagining the throw-down. If you're going to think about it you need to thing about it.

Badass character vs badass character wars can be fun, but also potentially ridiculous and kinda endless. Since I haven't played the games myself I'm not really qualified to say anything more. But there's always a bigger fish.

In this case, no. Because in everyone else's case there was Kratos.

Nah, that's not true. There's always Kane.

Heh, which Kane are you talking about then? Because I can only think of the Command and Conquer Kane at the moment. He's awesome, but I don't see him fighting a god and coming out of it well.

Really? Because I see him appearing to lose and then resurfacing in 20 years time looking exactly the same as he was before and having access to even more tech.

Unfortunately, Sephiroth always wins, because everybody's a final fantasy whore.

Me, I've always preferred 'most interesting villain' wars. Because you can actually start a debate instead of a 'my dad can beat up your dad' food fights. For example... Magus from Chrono Trigger and Richter from Tales of Symphonia with the villain-but-not-villain deal were both FAR more interesting than seph's pansy little "I can float around and I have a sword that's too long for anybody to ever be able to use properly!"

yes, I am a final fantasy hater (especially 7). If you don't like it, too bad, you can have your own opinion too.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I will say that an Archdemon from Dragon Age would beat Kratos simply based off the fact that, if it dies, it simply moves to the nearest darkspawn and gets back up. Therefore, any fight between then two has one of two outcomes: neither truly dies, or Kratos dies. Eventually, the second option will have to happen.

Until Kratos goes on epic quest to become Gray Warden. Sure, it'll kill him, but he's fought his way out of hell many a time.

I don't know, but I'm tempted to go check the "crossovers" section of Fanfiction.net to see if there's GoW/DA out there somewhere. They have fanfic for fucking PONG for gods' sakes, I don't see why that would be any different.

It would destroy Kratos's soul as well as killing him, so he doesn't get better.

As for an interesting fanfic I would like to see... Halo/pokemon strikes me as something that would be amusing.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I would comment on how much of a complete dick Kratos is... but I'm not sure who's completed God of War 3 yet. I seriously hate that guy, but everyone thinks he's bad ass. *shrugs* Oh well.

I've recently picked up Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising on word of a friend of mine. I'm only on the fourth mission, but I've greatly been enjoying the game so far. Definitely not for everyone as the game is rather unforgiving. Many firefights can take place over a few hundred metres and a single bullet to the brain pan can make it all go squish. A few shots to your legs, or chest can have you bleeding out and desperately trying to apply first aid to yerself whilst bullets fly about you.

I've only played single player, and the maps are fucking huge. I had my little guy walk a few km, and it felt like a few km. Moving through forest and over mountains whilst trying to avoid a few enemy guard posts and patrols was surprisingly fun. When I was discovered I did enough damage to their chopper that it took off, and set off my C4, and booked it into the woods in the darkness. The game let me break contact without having to murder everyone, and without the enemies going "well... they must be gone now,". I saw helicopters still searching the area and spreading out a few minutes after I'd gone.

Like I said though, hard. It's all part of the realism they tried to create here. There are lots of things I could pick apart, but the atmosphere is amazing.

You mean that they don't believe it was just a rat that killed their friend?

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Recently reopened Exteel after a while. 99 days according to the ingame logging, but anyway. The game system in itself hasn't changed much, but my main gamemode, Last Stand has grown awesome. Instead of just periodic spawnings of beasties, players have to survive 10 predetermined waves, with new enemies popping up, including suicide enemies and huge bosses. Pretty awesome, though it does mean no LS5 rounds until people figure out how to beat the odds.

Yes, because killing motherfucking GODS totally shows what a prick Kratos is. I mean, gosh, can't he understand that they have feelings too? God, what an asshole.

But seriously, there's a truck load of reasons why Kratos is badass and why people (rightly) consider him so, but I'll just leave you with the fact that HE KILLS EVERY SINGLE FUCKING GODDAMN GREEK MYTH YOU COULD POSSIBLY THINK OF.

Kraken? DEAD.
Motherfucking Zeus? DEAD.
Gaia? DEAD.

Reminds me of my old Delta Force game. You're always inserted into the operation a fair distance from your objective and it feels like a fair distance, with similar patrol dodging. (Or elimination) You can also sit back a long distance with a sniper rifle and pick off enemy sentries and sure, they might know that someone is sniping them, but it'll be a long time before they pinpoint you.

It doesn't have that kind of breaking contact thing, but this game is moving on about 10 years old now, cut it some slack. I wish I still had it, loaned it to someone I never see anymore...

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Kratos is a complete and total asshole. Sure, in the first one there's a reason for it, and the second one still works, but the third one you're just like 'wtf, god-damned asshole'.
Doesn't mean he's not a total badass, but he IS an asshole. And if you say it to his face, he'll gut ya. Because he's an asshole.

ANYWAYS.

@ lurker: yeah, I played it a couple weeks ago. I like what they've done with last stand, but you pretty much HAVE to use your main mech now, which means spending more money on repairs, which hurts me especially because I REFUSE to buy NC coins.
Basically, my problem is this: you can play that game for hours and hours, get to around level 30-40, and still get beaten in PvP by a level 1 just because he spent enough money to get that much better equipment than you can ever have. Hell, that's the reason I stick to Last Stand. Unfortunately, if you want ANY sort of money to buy weapons and parts that are worth a damn within your life time, you HAVE to PvP.
It's a nice game, yeah, but NCsoft is being fucking stupid about how to go about the donater thing. Sure, give them better stuff, but balance it by making weapons and parts level-restricted, which to my knowledge they have never done nor ever will do.
