Re: Games Discussion Thread

Alright, so I want to know who's idea it was to put achievements in Counterstrike: Source. I'm not against it, but it looks like I could get every last one of them just by playing with bots. Which is stupid. If they're going to put achievements in a game, at least make them somewhat challenging. I mean, hell, for as ridiculous as some of them are, at least in TF2 you have to work for the achievements.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Alright, so my copy of Alan Wake finally came in. I'm only about three "episodes" in, but I'm rather impressed. The game has a good story to it, and while I think the voice acting could be better at times, it's not hurtful to listen to. Indeed it almost seems like a beacon of sanity amidst the madness.

The game isn't all running, pointing lights and shooting, like I was worried it would be. Much of it feels like a highly interactive cutscene. There are many parts of the game that could have been turned into a cinematic in order to get you to running through the forest at night with a flashlight and gun, but instead they let you explore a little, get a feel for the world and its characters.

And as to the combat itself, it's well done. Aim flashlight to strip away the darkness from enemies, then shoot them to kill them. Button replaces flashlight batteries, another reloads. Aiming is pretty simple, and by using the flashlight instead of a cross hair, its a little more engrossing. Not by much, but enough. The sprint button also doubles as a dodge button, and when dodging an enemy attack it slows down a bit for a cinematic effect. Unnecessary, but pretty neat to see how close that Axe came to Alan's skull.

I'll have more on it when I'm either finished or further into the game to see how well the joy lasts.

Tis a shame that it was canceled for PS3, it would have gone along well for owners of Heavy Rain. Hopefully they port it for you guys.

Jumping to slightly older tech - don't know if anyone's ever played it, but the settlers of catan is a remarkably good board game. It's never the same twice, and you can totally customize it each time you play it. Highly fun if you can get a copy.

SLIGHTLY? I can remember playing this as a child, and I'm ancient. At least the people in my class make me believe that.

You're completely right though, if you can get a few people together and you still have a complete set of playing stones, Settlers of Catan is very fun. Not to mention all the add-ons they released. There's also a card game for two people, which has been released for the PC.

What's wrong with being ancient, my sling still works perfectly. Love Settlers of Catan myself, it's especially fun with drunk friends.

If you like Catan, try out Carseconne. Great game as well.

Protip: Do not buy the gallery edition.

It was the only copy at the store I picked it up at of the main game, although they also had expansions. Turns out the Gallery edition is non-expandable, and the board is... barely customisable.

I didn't read the box properly, and now I'm stuck with this crap, and a 5-6 player expansion I cannot use.

Munchkin is a pretty cool game too. With enough players, you can cover a table with the equipment cards of all the characters. I've got a pic of that on my phone where I can't do anything to get it onto here. There is no surface spare around the edges of the table.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Just finished playing Turok (2008) for my 360. Gotta' say that it's not a bad game, but it does have some flaws. The biggest one HAS to be the difficulty. About 70%-80% of the time, the game will be legitimately difficult. The remaining percent though...ugh. Sometimes you'll get bum-rushed by swarms of enemies, and be unable to fight back due to game mechanics, such a delay in being able to fire your weapon if you've gotten up after being knocked to the ground, or enemies who simply do too much damage to you for no real reason.

It's a sad thing to see in Turok, because the game is good and has a fair challenge without those segments of artificial difficulty. Other than that, it's a fun game with a lot of good atmosphere, good voice acting, and fun gameplay. Slitting the throats of raptors is pretty badass, and I like the decent stealth mechanics they put in place. I bought it for about 10 bucks used, so if you have a chance to pick it up at that price and are into killing dinosaurs and making plenty of shit blow up, I'd say go for it.

I didn't mind Turok, and while the big draw for me (knife and bow) was awesome... they didn't give me enough fucking arrows! I ended up getting bored with it though. Oh well.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

i made it through the first half of Turok with just the knife. then i gave up when that became to hard. i don't know what kind of enjoyment i got outta knifing my way through a whole army, but that made the whole game for me.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Turok on the 360 was all about the knife for me. The only reason I used any other weapon was if I wasn't able to use my knife on an enemy, like if I wasn't able to get close enough to melee.

**Sin's honest impressions on Alan Wake**

It's not a shame they canceled it! OMG, I can't believe you actually paid money for that lousy...thing...they're trying to pass off as a game!!!!

((And yes, I'm joking. Some people need to lighten the fuck up. Seriously.))

I fire the wave motion gum!

If we're taking board games, Arkham Asylum. Seriously. You verses the game. Half dozen different ways to lose. Three ways to win (maybe four with the right expansion). The game *is* evil and will try to kill your character at *every* opportunity. But it's so much fucking fun! My gaming group and I switch off and play that when we're not saving towns from warring goblin tribes. I think we've won...twice now? Playing it properly (figured out we screwed up on a few rules initially, so we wiped our record.) and lost...yeah. Just...yeah.

Cthulu's a bitch. So's Yig. And don't get me started on Narlathotep, Azothoth (although he's fun. He wakes up, world's destroyed. You lose. Negative infinity to your dice rolls to fight him), Shib-Neggerah, Ithicua...And yes, I know I'm probably spelling half of these wrong but if you've ever played/read/done anything with Cthulu, there's a REASON for that.

Copper.... Now I want to try the game out cause it sound hard. Which is hard to find these days with most games holding the players hand for most of the game. Wonder if I can find and online version.

That I can't tell ya. Finding it to order online might be possible, but I don't know that there's an online version. Although the good (?) thing is, it's for 1-8 players. The rules just change pending on how many people are running around on the board.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I can get the game no problem but I don't really have the type of friends to the game. I know you can game alone but on of the things cool about broad games is playing with friends. Seem unless the makers of the game release an online version themselves it's not happening. Maybe in a few year we see one.

I've actually already read that article, and I couldn't believe the reaction some people had. Sure the graphics aren't the best I've ever seen and there is the occasional hiccup, but they look good enough, and get the job done. All in all, they do not detract from the game as a whole.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

If we're going board games, anyone tried 'ZOMBIES!!!'? I got the main pack while I was at college, and I find it pretty fun. Though now at home I can't play it as much, the rules are simple, the map is player-generated every turn, and with the expansions you can go to every steriotypical zombie apocalypse location you can dream of. Add the fact that Twilight Creations actually has a database of player-made scenarios and made-up rules, and ya don't really need to play it the same way twice.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

ZOMBIES!!! isn't bad. I've got pretty much all the expansions. But lately I've been into this game called "Last Night on Earth" which is another zombie board game. I find it a little more in depth, and a little more fun. Kinda like... Axis & Allies compared to Risk. Both are great games, but I enjoy the more in depth gameplay and strategic level of A&A.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Hey, graphics hiccup. It's not uncommon. And if they're pretty and shiny enough, I'm happy. Pixel count be damned. I mean, holy crap, the jump from 8Bit to 16Bit was f'ing cutting edge. Gamers today don't know how good they have it *rambles on about uphill, both ways, barefoot, in the snow*

*checks to see if Zombies!!! is the same as the one played at latest con* Nope, but in reading the description...

A simple game where players are people trapped in a town full of zombies. First to make it to the heliport or kill 25 zombies wins. Cards are used to represent events in the game such as finding weapons or zombies. Simple counters are used to keep track of certain aspects of the game. The game comes with 100 little zombie miniatures.
Holy shit, it's L4D the board game. Sounds like a blast. I may have to talk the GM into this.
