Re: *UPDATE* [8/31] Comprehensive patreon list
It's the weakness of the genre and it's no secret that Fenoxo is seen, even in his circle of people, as a terrible writer.
There's also the problem of dialogue like you said, there's a lot of text explaining what's happening, what the character is thinking and exposition in scenes but very little dialogue. Like 10% or 20% of the text is characters talking, and outside of sex scenes most of that is lore and exposition too, not character development. Which is funny, you'd think that a game about sex and intimacy that's text heavy would let characters talk more and focus on their development.
Yes. I've actually done a lot of research about text and writing in video games. Bottom line? If it's not important, then don't say it.
A talented writer can tell the player something about the game world, develop the story, and further character development all in one short sentence. Even better if it's also entertaining to read.
I'm probably not the best at all that, but I do try my best to keep it to a minimum. In the end I just try to think of what the characters would say, rather than telling the player everything I think they should know.
Let's say the player meets an NPC that wants them to go get a chalice for them. Does the player need to know the history of the chalice? Not really. Do they need to know the character's motives for wanting it? Again, no. The only thing that you need to consider is the NPC's personality towards the player.
A: They'll be nice to the player, because they want something.
B: The player doesn't need to know why the NPC wants it. They just need to know that they'll be rewarded for their effort. The NPC should offer them gold or something the player needs badly to access new areas.
C: The player's character/s might rightfully be suspicious, but ultimately it's up to the player to decide if they want to do the quest or not. The MC will ultimately just say, "I'll think about it." or such, rather than taking 5 paragraphs to question the NPC's motives while contemplating the meaning of life.
If I ever make a text game about sex and you're going to engage in sexual stuff with an NPC, then I'll probably just write something like, "You have sex with the goblin." The end.
If the player wants more details then they can check their character sheet for vaginal looseness and all that other good stuff. No need to deprive the player of their own imagination.
The exception would be a highly interactive sexual situation where you can pick your actions during sex, kinda like cyber sex. I think a game like that would be interesting.
