Cecilia's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Re: Bitbot's CYOA (Details (Possibly) Inside)

Mini-Update

Cecilia is unaware of what her father is suffering from, as he gave no hints in his letter. Only mentioning that he was ill. If he had, she probably could have made reference.

Poking through the creatures of the world book, Cecilia finds the entry she had thought about earlier, the one that made her blush. Though only rumors that they lived in the forest, it was apparently some sort of lurking type of creature. It was made of long, green tendrils that would lay on the ground, waiting for prey to walk over it. When suitable prey did, it would lash up, capturing them and binding them tight as it would try to drag them into it's underground cave home. Although the details aren't written, it is told that any victim that unlucky will likely be used to breed additional lurking tentacles... though luckily reports has thus far indicated they are not deadly.

Re: Bitbot's CYOA (Details (Possibly) Inside)

In that case, briefly entertain the titillating idea of a domesticated variety... though of course it's more important to actually get to the business of fetching the feverish father, poor old guy.

Re: Bitbot's CYOA (Details (Possibly) Inside)

I will likely be trying to update around 9 EST this evening, which is about two and a half hours from now, so if you'd like to vote, please do so by then.

Re: Bitbot's CYOA (Details (Possibly) Inside)

We should bring a medical book, then, to cross-reference our sick dad's symptoms with.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

appears to be the most favored picture. I'm a bit of a fan of it myself, as well. Perhaps slightly more low cut, but still good.

You start to pack, picking out a couple of books you feel would be useful in travelling. Your bad could hold more, but you'd rather leave it empty for now, after all, maybe you'll come across a book in your travels. You pick out four books that have topics you might find useful. They include Flora and Fauna of the Forlorn Forest, Survival Guide - Living Off the Land, Creatures of the World, and Medical Reference Guide, 7th Edition. You also grab one of your favorite tales, a fictional story about a mage who once saw the end of magic in the world, creating a secret glade in a hidden corner of the world, so that someday magic could return.

As you pack up, you decide first off that you could use some protection on your trip. You decide to visit the weapon store, though you're unsure how much use it'll be. You find they have a lot of weapons, though you've already focused your thoughts on two ones in particular, likely a staff of some sort, probably to double as a walking stick, and probably a knife, which could be useful in many ways, not just as a weapon.

Shopping
Staves
-Masterwork Oak Staff - 45 gold
--This sturdy staff is made from an elder oak tree of the Forlorn forest, it is unlikely to ever break, and is light and supple, making it easy to weird, especially with the carved handholds. It's also a bit decorative, so it could look impressive during travel.
-Sturdy Staff - 20 gold
--This staff is a standard staff produced in quantity, the middle ground for quality, it's well made, but nothing special.
-Worn Staff - 5 gold
--This staff has probably seen better days, or maybe it was a reject, regardless, it's cheap, and it could probably give a good thump, if it doesn't break

Knives
-Ranger's Blade - 95 gold
--This knife is a bit longer than most, with a well crafted blade and hilt. It comes with a leg or arm sheath for quick usage and availability. The blade is made from the most durable steel, and treated with a special alchemical substance to never get dirty, though it will require sharpening from time to time, as all knives do.
-Survival Knife - 40 gold
--This blade is a bit shorter than some, but the blade is still well crafted. Probably more suited towards usage around camp for say, carving firesticks or cutting rope, it could still be used in a pinch as a deadly weapon.
-Camp Blade - 15 gold
--This is a simple fold in knife which is useful around camp for misc tasks that a knife might be required to do. Not well suited for fighting, but could surprise an enemy.
-Leg/Arm Sheath - 5 gold
--Available for purchase separately.

After deciding on your purchases, you decide to check around town for traveling companions or possibly caravans that might be headed south. Sadly though, you find out that no caravans are heading out of town for a while yet, considering travel has been more dangerous, and there aren't enough people for anyone to feel secure. You briefly consider checking the local inns and taverns for hirelings, but you also get in the thought that that might not be the best idea... if you hired the wrong guy, you might be even worse off when you get into the secluded woods!

However, while pondering this, you remember your good friend Dan. He's a childhood friend of yours that you met shortly after you first ventured outside the guild when you were old enough to remember. You became friends with him, even though you lived in the guild and he didn't. His father was a soldier and guardsman, and his mother a baker. Anytime you left the guildhouse, you'd end up playing with him around the city, and he'd often come to visit you in the guildhouse where you'd tell him about your studies. You're aware he has a bit of a crush on you, but are unsure if you reciprocate the feelings. Regardless, you decide to pay him a visit, as you know his father trained him well. He's happy to see you, inviting you in to chat as you explain the situation to him. He says he would be glad to accompany you for only traveling and maintenance expenses, which would add up to around 15 gold. He has his own armor and weapon, and works often as a caravan guard. He gets paid well, so you know you're getting a good deal...though part of you thinks you might even be able to talk him out of that small amount he's asking... after all, he does have a crush on you...

Decide which, if any weapons to purchase.
Do you want to hire your friend Dan?
-If yes, do you want to pay him the 15 gold? Or...do you maybe want to offer him payment in some other form...

Extras: Any other shopping? What else do you need before you go?

Bonus Vote: How does Cecilia feel about Dan? Does she like him as a friend, does she want him? Does she want to tease him and drag him along? Milk him for all he's worth?

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Weapons:
Masterwork (or at least sturdy) staff. Losing it would suck, but lets start this with a little optimism, yes?
Camp Knife. Seriously a weapon you don't know how to use is more danger to yourself then to your enemies. A belt knife should be sufficient.

Dan: I don't have a strong opinion on this, but having someone come with us is probably a bright idea, and he seems to be the best option. Definitely pay him back for his expenses, but not a penny more unless we want to spring for his usual merchant's guard pay.

Oh, and I think that if we really wanted to sleep with him we would have already done it.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Sturdy Staff and Survival Knife, we don't want to attract the attention of the fancy staff and we might well need some money down the road to pay for other things. Middle ground for both. =D

As for Dan, pay the man, if we convince him with sexy times he might expect it and leave us high and dry later.

Also vote for friends for now, sex is better with some build up to it and what better opportunity than a grand adventure? >_>

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Sturdy staff and Camp knife.

Pay him with gold, because whoring ourselves out should always be a last resort.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Sturdy staff, camp blade.

We think Dan is a pretty cool guy. Who happens to be cute. Pay the man his money, but don't be afraid to be flirty.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Sturdy staff and camp blade.

Also pay Dan.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Sturdy staff; we're not trying to draw attention to ourselves and the price of the fancy one is outrageous -- almost six-months wages?! Eek!

A camp blade should suffice for most things... besides, I like the sound of Dan. He sounds dependable enough, and I don't mind paying him the fees. I'm sure that if he needed something from the Scholar's guild later, he would offer up the coin in exchange, right? Besides, if he's asking about money he's being professional, and that's downright gentlemanly compared to what he /could/ be asking for...

He sounds practical and dependable, but it would be nice to see him in action before making any decisions about him as a romantic choice. Besides... Cecilia isn't sure about how to return his advances. Perhaps trying to match his own flirtations when the right time comes up would be the best way to show him... but now doesn't exactly seem like the best time. Perhaps if we get bored on the road and have some time to ourselves...?

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Sturdy staff and survival knife. It doesn't take training to stab a wolf biting you, people, and we don't want it to break when something tougher-skinned comes along and has our second hand for swinging that staff around in it's mouth, or we're climbing or something. No leg/arm sheathe - we've got a sheath in general, though, right? Like tied to our belt or something?

Dan sounds like a pretty cool guy. We should pay him - we're sorta sheltered and useless, so we should focus on surviving the forest, and wait to decide whether or not we want to bone him once we've made it through.

Make sure he knows not to play hero to impress us. Hope and pray he's not distracted with his crush.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Going for a double update today, probably an hour before the first update.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

You look at the wares of the shop for a while, carefully weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each purchase. You briefly consider the masterwork staff, but decide not to get it for now, though the quality is really high, you feel it might attract unwanted attention, and settle on the sturdy staff. You also settle on the camp blade for now, folding up will make it easy to carry in your pouch, you doubt you'll use it for fighting, but in a pinch it could be useful. As you select the items and go up to pay, you chat with the shop owner a little, as it's a pretty slow day and he probably doesn't mind a chat. You know him as a friend of the scholars guild, as he often visits looking for information on weapons and crafting, being a bit of a studied man himself. You chat and he thanks you for brightening up his day a little by giving you a little discount on your purchase, bringing the total amount of gold spent to only 40.

When you visit Dan you enjoy chatting for a while as you agree to pay him for his expenses, feeling it was right, after all, this was for food and such, so that he didn't actually make a loss travelling with you. He thanks you, though you get the feeling that even though you've paid him, he's going to enjoy travelling with you as a friend. You know he has a crush on you, but have told him before you don't quite see him that way, though you do flirt with him on occasion. And since then he has behaved himself and proven to still be a good friend...but who knows what travelling together might bring...

You try to think of anything else you need as you pack up your things, getting ready to meet Dan by the town gates. You have a bit of travelling food and a few other odds and ends of survival gear that you picked up because the survival guide suggested so. Meeting Dan, you see he is clad in his armor, which looks moderately lightweight, but enough to give him a small air of impressiveness. He has his sword slung on his back, right under his shield. You certainly think you'll feel safe travelling with him.

It looks like it's time to travel! Didn't forget anything, did you?

How should you travel? Quickly? Take your time and go steady? How do you want to talk to Dan as you travel? Mention old stories? Discuss current events? Something else? Be creative!

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Traveling steady sounds safer.

We should talk to Dan about current events.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

I'm assuming we already have really basic stuff. I mean, change of clothing, camping supplies if this is going to take more then a day, and food for Cecila as well as our friend. That should go without saying.

Pacing should probably be moderate. We're not here to see the sights, and the forest has dangers, but on the other hand we're not going to run the whole way there or anything.

We should probably ask him if he's heard anything about the village, since we never found out just what that rumor was. Other then that... well, it's not a short journey. Old times and current events are probably both good. If it's been a while since we've seen him, leaning towards Old Times is probably fine. If we see him every week, maybe not so much?

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Wouldn't we potentially need a tent or at least a bedroll of some sort, assuming we'll be travelling for more than a day anyway. Might also be an idea to get some rations or at least a waterskin in case living off the land doesn't go so well.

Travel steady, no need to tire ourselves out with rushing.

We should talk to Dan about his aspirations as well, sow some interest in his life. We want him to be more than just hired help in case we run out of money.

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

Dan wouldn't run off on us if we ran out of money, he's a pretty solid guy... right? o.o Right?!

Anyways, let's keep things relatively quick-paced. Cecilia's father's probably not getting any better, and it would be good to hurry through the dangerous part of the woods.

I would say, for Dan, tell him a bit about what we've been doing in the Scholar's guild, ask him where his travels as a caravan guard have taken him... and if he's gone this way before, ask him about what sorts of dangers we might encounter there... Maybe on a less overt note, suss out what /he/ thinks about the monsters. It wouldn't be very becoming to let on that thinking about such things makes Cecilia blush, of course... Though I suppose if he catches a hint of that, he might sort of understand why she hasn't been outright flirting back? Maybe if we emphasize questions about his greater adventures he'll pick up on the fact that perhaps we have a bit of a thrill-seeking bone, even if Cecilia's been cloistered in the city for all her life.

I agree about asking if he knows about the rumour revolving around the town. We haven't heard any specifics, but chances are that he'll have heard something, if he's well-travelled.

And, you know, whilst underway, if he's relatively chivalrous about it, I don't think it would be a /bad/ thing to admire him a little. It's not like he's homely or anything!

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

>Update 3: Friend Zoned
Aw man, now I feel terrible!

We oughta hustle our way to the edge of the forest. If it's dark or getting late, we should probably camp along the edge, and then go at a moderate pace through the forest, watching out for monsters and rapevines, but also moving quickly so as to spend as little time in the dangerous forest as possible.

Cecelia, did you pack your tinderbox? What about some torches, and some flint and steel to strike a spark? Do you have your map and other navigatey things? Did you pack your toothbrush? And don't forget some clean undies!

Re: Cecila's Tale - A Bitbot CYOA

You go over your supplies, food, torches, tindersticks, flint and steel, and all the misc things that you picked up at the suggestion of the survival guide. You know Dan also likely has one of these things each, though you do remember you've forgotten to pick up a bedroll. You give a bit of thought to a tent as well, bus dismiss it as impractical. Firstly, they're expensive, and secondly, they're quick heavy, you doubt you could carry it. And it would be a bad idea to have Dan carry it because it's bulky and would get in his way if he had to fight. So for now you decide just a bedroll will do. You go to the general store, buying a very nice and comfy one, high quality, for only 3 gold. After all, if you're going to have to sleep outdoors, you might as well me comfortable.

That all done with, you double check your supplies again, remembering a few changes of clothes, though you don't think you'll use them unless well...your current ones get torn off, or something similar... Regardless, it's time to leave, and Dan meets you at the front gate, smiling quite a bit, you find. Curious, you ask him what he's so happy about.

"Well, it's just... I love to travel, get out of the city, see the sights, you see." Dan explains to you, as you recognize the signs of wanderlust. Which is funny, because a part of you has been feeling that as well, though you're only going to see your dad... part of you looks forward to this journey, just so you can get out of the city.

"I... see." You say with a small smile. "I guess... well... I can understand...I feel a bit of the same way." you finish shyly, deciding it wouldn't hurt to tell Dan that you want to get out more. He nods as you finish, grinning a little

As you travel, you chat about old times a little, it's been about five weeks since you saw him last, as you've both been busy with so many things, you haven't had time to sit around and chat. You needle him a tiny bit about missing your birthday, but don't try to make him feel too bad about it, you can tell he's really unhappy he couldn't make it. After that, you decide to ask him a bit about what he's seen in his travels, and his ambitions. He tells you about a great many travels, and that yes, he has been through the woods before. He talks about how he's visited ruins, traveled over the sea to far away ports for trading, and even poked around in the caves a little. Though, this has always been traveling with someone else, and a part of him doesn't want to do that, he just wants to set out as an adventurer, exploring various areas and doing whatever he'd want. He says the first place he'd go would be the rumored haunted island.

You question him a little more about the forest and the monsters within, seeing what he thinks about them. He responds that it really quite depends. While there are wolves and the like, which he considers just animals trying to survive, they often don't bother travelers if it doesn't look worth the trouble, there are also creatures like the lurker vines. He mentions how he's see a few of the female merchants who had hired him get caught... he considered them... interesting creatures, if a bit vile, but not inherently evil, after all, it wasn't like they killed people. Still, he'd rather not see you get caught by something like that. He takes the time to say that the most common monster he's see aside from that is slimes, though he's never seen what they do, since they were always quite weak and managed to destroy them before they could do anything.

When you ask him about the rumors you remember hearing about the village, he nods, speaking. "I think I've heard those rumors as well, though I don't know how much I trust it. What I hear is that apparently there's some sort of cult forming in the village, of sorts. I don't know much more than that, but I'm a bit doubtful of there being a cult as it stands regardless."

You are making good progress with Dan, going at a brisk pace, you ended the woods proper a good set of hours ago, and here the sun is still bright through the trees. You stop for a quick snack before continuing, Dan keeping an eye out at the surrounding area for any creatures or anything out of place. Fortunately, the lunch goes by without issue as you pack up. There's still a few hours of daylight left in the day, and neither you nor Dan feel tired. Smiling you continue on your way, chatting a little with Dan, deciding to flirt and tease with him a tiny bit while admiring him for his profession. He chuckles a little, clearing enjoying travelling with you, even just as a friend.

Night falls eventually, as the day winds to a close. You set up your bedroll as Dan sets up his, making a small firepit for light and warmth. He keeps an eye out for a while as you rest, making sure there's nothing in the woods before his drifts into a light sleep. During the night, nothing happens, and you wake up refreshed, having a quick breakfast before setting off at a brisk pace with Dan again. Today is a bit more quiet, as there's not as much to talk about, but you start to read your book, pointing out interesting things and Dan making comments on them, looking around as you take the chance to actually get some real world practice in identifying plants.

As you're travelling through the day, yawning a bit as the weather is nice, not to hot, but there's a nice breeze that keeps you cool as the sun beats down, filtered through the trees as it starts to get a bit darker her. Your yawning seems to distract you from something as Dan puts a hand on your shoulder, telling you to stop as he draws his weapon and shield. "I heard something, moving through the growth." he says, eyeing around as he looks for whatever made the noise. You manage to spot it before he does, pointing it out to him. You recognize it as a slime, from Dan's description and from what you've read in the book... though...

"I've never seen this type before." Dan says... a little bit of worry evident in his voice, after all, an unknown enemy might be the most dangerous.

Finally, action! How do you want to handle this...do you want to let Dan handle it by himself? Help him fight? Maybe you can identify this type of slime and tell him what it says? Perhaps you remember it off hand from various readings of the books, but if you don't, do you want to take the time to look it up?

What about tactics, is there anything Dan should try if the book doesn't suggest any?
