Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

I don't really understand that. Why would cooking make you enjoy wine more? Just so you know, I don't cook much so I'm genuinely curious.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

It's usually added into a lot of recipes. For instance, I like making drunken spaghetti, but a good wine will usually matter. There's also this HUGE specific taste of wines to certain dinners that I'm trying to understand. At this point, I can't even tell which colors to match up most of the time, I just know you don't have white wine with steak.

It's little fanciful faux pas bullshit that I'm trying to see if I need to set up a nice dinner.

*edit* my current project of taste is trying to set up a nice garlic shrimp pasta with white wine sauce. I haven't exactly got the sauce down yet, but I'm loving my shrimp pasta dinners lately,

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Well I know about cooking wine, but do you really add things like red or white wine into recipes? And also, at least you know there're specific wines. I'm uncultured swine and just see two colors.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Apparently, from what I've gathered, it's less like red, white and sometimes pink, and more like red, white and whatever shades in between.

I always thought it was white wine with white meat and red wine with red meat. On the other hand, I have no idea where I got this rule.

This conversation makes me picture Toxic as having a mustache and wearing a tuxedo and monocle all the time.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

It's usually something like that, but can get pretty specific? I'm not very sure on that. I used to think all seafood was white too, but I guess it depends on the specific meal, and after that, it's not so much a specific color, but a specific area of color you should be in that you can pick your wine from. I'm just not sure anymore, hence why I pick my meals specifically.

I had a picture of that somewhere, with the subscript "BRILLIANT!"

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

So is this a rule of etiquette or is it just a matter of "this wine tastes best with this meat so you should do it"?

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

I know it's considered classless to order the wrong wine, but the tradition may have sprung up around complimentary tastes.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Well, I'm not much for social rules if something still suits you, so the idea someone would give you a problem for ordering a t-bone with a glass of chablis makes me think I'd be stabbing them with that stupid extra salad fork I know I won't be using. But it is a kinda universal thing. It's like when you're a kid, if you're having a bag of doritos, you usually get soda, and if you're having cookies, you usually get milk. Today I didn't have wine, so I made a small garlic sauce with my pasta, only to find we had almost no drinks whatsoever, and ended up having it with a wild cherry hi-c box. It's just that some things don't mix in most people's palettes.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Man... When I go to restaurants, I just order of glass of water with my food.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Haha, I can't stand water. I've been known to order hot cocoa after a game of golf mid heat wave of the hottest summers. I actually had a really quiet restaurant freeze movie style in shock, and I sat there thinking "What? I like the taste"

But then again, that might more indicative of my hot chocolate fetish.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

i enjoy a nice wine, but that could because I've been trying to cook more lately.

Oh don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a glass of red wine as soon as I'm home. I was simply saying on the job I like the coffee better (it's warmer and I work outside most of the time. Also wakes me up in the morning).

I'm not a fan of white wine really, so even if I should be having it with something, I'll still go for a red. I'm not really too big into the wine scene either so I still stick with the fairly cheep Merlot.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

I was going to bring up that I cook, but still don't care about wine.

But I mostly cook asian foods, weeaboo that I am in the kitchen. (What? it's delicious and easy). I occasionally use chinese rice wine, but only really when the recipe calls for it.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

>.> I do know that Australian Shiraz (only Australian. Fuck yourself California) goes well with steak, asparagus, a yeast roll, and lightly garlic-ed mashed potatoes.

Silly me, i always pick food to go with my wine. I love looking up wines and buying them and then basing a meal around it >.>

I'm not an alcoholic, I tell you. I'm a connoisseur.

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

If you were an alcoholic, you'd probably be abusing vodka sauces instead.

Drunken spaghetti can easily get you doped. If serving a large amount, there can be more than 2 quarts of wine absorbed into it.

Doesn't boiling remove most of the alcohol in it?

Re: Images of Wonder Truth and Fear...

Uh... no? I don't think so. I think its direct heat.

Not quite sure, although I know most people throw it in just before boil. Also it is moved from the pot to a large frying pan in order to absorb a cup of wine or so in there as well. I thought if you're adding it to water, it'll still retain a good amount of the alcohol, maybe like 75%

I don't really like wine in general.

I'll get food with it in it and I'll have a glass of red wine every other blue moon, but it was just never something that caught on with me. I prefer even water over wine.
