So school started for me again this week. I'm adding a Foreign Language Correspondence Clerk to my IT Clerk. It'll be like Clerks, only a lot less dope and fun, and a lot more French and Chinese. . . I'm not going to be online as much, and I may have to drop an RP or two.

Well good luck with the Chinese, I picked up a little Mandarin when I was learning Korean and it's tough to learn. the French shouldn't be too hard though.

I actually don't know if they're going to teach us Mandarin, but I have heard it's easy to speak as well. And I'll still be on every day, I just need to manage my time more.

Erm Mandarin is one of the few tonal languages still around, meaning that if you change the pitch of your voice the wrong way while speaking you are saying something completely different...

its more obtuse than that, i once heard of a story where someone tried to ask when their assignments was due and they stuffed up and said "to jump on a fart". That and they have entire stories that consist of the one word over and over with a myriad of different tones.

Gah. Mandarin. I wonder why my parents never bothered teaching me THAT during my childhood. For some reason, they felt that Cantonese was more important apparently.

Tones are really important, I can tell you that. Couple words I can think of from the top of my head is "Fork" and "Tea", "Give" and "Nose", "Candy" and "Soup", "Gun" and "Long", "Nine" and "Dog", "Want" and "Climb", and a bunch more I can't be bothered to remember.
