Having had a look at the fonts again, I think I have to agree with the majority on Hand Textur as the best. I think I can pretty much discard most of the choices from the first batch for fairly obvious reasons (mainly plain-ness), apart from Uncial Antiqua, but given it being more Gaelic learning that's thematically inappropriate for the character. From the second batch, Barloesius Schrift and CAT Schmalfette Thannhaeuser have very short ascenders, which make them pretty hard to read. Gotische Missalschrift suffers a lot from letters which look way too similar (e.g. h/b, or t/r which are basically the same glyph). Hand Textur is not perfect, with some issues on similar looking letters (e.g. it's fairly hard to distinguish e/r/t, and perhaps y/u, but nowhere near as bad as Gotische Missalschrift), but it maintains the ancient Germanic feel which I want. Thanks for all the feedback on this.
(Also as a technical note, the horizontal width of the font isn't actually a concern for me, because I can just spread things across multiple dialogues if necessary. Typesetting takes so many issues out of translating.)
Now, progress report: Bad news is that I've only really one thing done since last time, but it's one of the big ticket items: I've gotten integration between JapeTrans + LanguageTool, and so now I have several thousand errors to check out - although mostly these should disappear once I've finished a list of regex's to identify onomatopoeias. Slow progress has been part because of work continuing to be a bit nuts, and some hand pain caused by a new mouse (solution: repair old mouse, return new one).
Going forward I hopeful I should have at least a better amount of time. Work is starting to calm down a bit, and obviously my hand should be getting better. If this forecast is true, it will be the first time in the last five months I haven't been overloaded with work and/or ill. Anyhow, onwards! Check back for the next progress report on the 3rd of June (2 weeks).
Oh and MyNameIsHawk - spoilering this due to discussing the character I've been looking for the font for:

While there is a certain thematic appropriateness in using comic sans for the beast that will destroy the world... No. Just no.
