Well I don't usually go in this thread, but it seems I've been missing a lot of cool stuff. 16 and 1/2! Also, Since the discussion was happening in school, and in the realm of ethics/ philosophy/ antropology there is probably some 20 years of academic lag, somewhat explaining the silliness of the discussions.
Oh, and I'm just about to go pick up my copy of Halo 4, just going to clean a little first.
And I've got a date tonight, and a different girl that really wants to go on a date next week.
So after shittyness comes funtimes I suppose.
EDIT: I had the Limited edition pre-ordered with Gamestop...SO MANY CODES! There are codes in the LE and there are codes from GS!

I find it quite odd that women are still looked at in the archaic madonna/whore thing. As if there's no gray area. And the strangest part is that however much men contribute to that, it seems that just as much is contributed by women.

Yeah, some of the discussion that came up and was gleaned over was, like Ranger said, "Okay, hey. I'm a girl. I like porn. Where, in your happy little black and white world does that make me fit?" What really irked the friend was that they were reading an essay by Margaret Thatcher on the subject. One, it was written, I think, back in the 70's or 80's (I could be wrong but still...) Plus the subject that they're covering in class is *American* pornography. No offense meant, but Thatcher's not American. Not that she can't talk on the subject, but if you're talking to American students/audiences, you'd think they'd pick someone a little closer to home who wrote on the subject. Plus the stuff they're saying is so bad is stuff that many folks might consider squicks (comparable to gore or snuff.) I mean, they were discussing porn with nipple shearing in it. Not clamps, not biting. Shearing. As in "removal of."
So yes, I can see how something like that might be disturbing. However, near as I know, stuff like that makes up only a small percentage of porn out there. And again, brings up the whole BDSM aspect of things (which, to me, that's a little extreme and beyond BDSM, but still.) Bear in mind, too, that I'm repeating a lot of this second hand and may or may not be paraphrasing correctly on all of it but the overall gist is not all porn is bad and guys aren't the only ones that like it. I just wish some of the kids in my friend's class could understand that.

Giddy isn't so much the feeling as relief, but my Tortoise Shell Cat of 15 or so years went missing for a day or so. (Extremely unusual, she's never tardy when it comes to food, or yowling for it.) I thought she'd finally bit it somewhere on the streets, but thankfully she just felt like making me hold my breath for awhile.
Of course, she came back in the late hours making a racket outside my door for food, so I guess she's as lively as ever.

The type of stuff they're referring too there I'm sure was more a shot for trying for shock factor. It's easy to get people inflamed on your side if you make them go squick or enraged first, after all.

Glad to hear that, Cappy. Mine got outside for the first time ever the other night. Was not an experience I think she wants to repeat. And yeah, they have a habit of letting you know when they want fed, don't they?

I dunno. Maybe? It did seem along the lines of the "Okay, so this is what porn is, this is why it's bad toward women, etc etc" (Not wholly the stuff mentioned, but there was stuff they watched a day before, too, that my friend didn't go to class for because, well, she didn't feel like talking about and watching violent porn. Or just porn in general. Especially with a bunch of guys in the class that she didn't know. I told her it was harkening back to the "If HP Lovecraft did Sex Ed" video.)

Friend in college called me up the other day and goes "You know those DVD bags you use to put your manga in?" "Yeah?" "Can you fill one of them up with your yaoi? I've got a point to make in class." So, I did. And for the hell of it, I weighed it.
Sixteen and a half pounds of gay porn.
And it did, honestly, help her make her point. (I'm paraphrasing a bit here.) They're talking about porn in one of her english classes and how bad it is and how bad it is toward women and every time she tries to make an intelligent question (Like "Where does the BDSM subculture fall in this?" or "What about gay porn?" or "If porn is so bad for marriages, why is it that some marriage counselors recommend that couples rent a porn together?") the teacher, because she doesn't have an answer for her, glosses right over it and ignores her. So their task today was to bring in mainstream pornography.
Sixteen and a half pounds of gay porn.
And back to her making her point, when the teacher questioned whether or not yaoi was mainstream, S's response was "Most of this can be purchased off the shelf, at a bookstore, without ID." She further went on to make the argument that yaoi manga are made by women FOR women. Men have very little to do with the yaoi industry outside of being in the books. It was also to help disprove the argument that women are not turned on by visual stimulation. There were also other issues brought up, such as "how can this be degrading to women if there are no women?" And, of course, folks in the class wanted to see the books. So the response was "Be careful. They're not mine." It also helped her find the yaoi fangirls in the class and she literally got to watch her teacher make a real life
And hearing about all that made my suckass day so much better. That, and it's fun to say "sixteen and a half pounds of gay porn."
