Re: What made you feel giddy today?
Or, you know, any of the countries neighboring Russian?
Granted, I do think Putin is a badass, but I wouldn't willingly give him any sort of power. Although, after WW3 the world will have significantly less problems, being an irradiated rock tends to do that...
Well, there are some countries that are fairly pro-Russian. Belarus and Kazakhstan comes to mind. On the other hand you have countries like Georgia and the Ukraine that shows what happens when former Soviet republics try to align with the west (although the Baltic states did all right). Of course, that's in reference to the political and economic elite, and not in reference to most people. Russia maintains an increasingly more friendly relationship with China, although China isn't as interested in antagonizing the US or the EU as Russia is, since China's economy depends much more on export to those very countries.
Kim Jong Un's approval rating is through the roof!
Well, as much as I think Russia's media is heavily manipulated (moreso than Western, at any rate) I do think Russian approval ratings are reasonably accurate as Russia is a very different beast than North Korea.
To a lot of Russians, Putin is the strong leader that is keeping Russia strong and afloat in the face of hypocritical Western politics that continue to try and debase Russia and deny it its, in their eyes, rightful place as one of the preeminent nations of the world.
Another thing is that Putin's party is strongly populistic and throws itself on whatever political currents are prevailing. In the last few years, Putin has lamented the fall of the Soviet Union (something that was highly controversial for the Russian right wing for a long time, although he is ex-KGB, so it's not too strange) and partly exonerated Stalin, yet on the other hand cozied up to the Orthodox Church (whom it'll be noted faced severe discrimination and persecution under the soviet era). Not to mention the flirting with right-wing extremists that are expousing a racist ideology against asian-russian migrants to the more industrualized west (compare to Americans who are really paranoid about mexicans).
Basically, Putin's political platform is basically "keeping Putin in office". XD
