Amateurs. I chose to receive an instant email notification every time someone posts. Pretty useful thing.

im trying to picture it in my head :

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

He's joking. Still, it makes me think when way back in May the game was about 2 weeks from the release.

Yea, that was borderline insane. That also did not account for 1) the time spent finishing the Hunter's Quest release, and 2) the revamped artwork. I have a terrible habit of planning as though I'll work every waking minute on the game, but that just never happens. Hence why I don't do release dates anymore, I do the progress chart.

@Keep: Awesome, that made me laugh!

@Archedio: Three months is a pretty safe estimate. I doubt it would take that long, but I can tell you, checking every three hours is not worthwhile. Even if I was 100%, it would take me more than a day or two to finish the final pieces. It's close, but not that close.

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

Sound will easily take 3 months. :p

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

This may be too late to come up but since all the art from the prologue and battle system have been implemented and stuff, why not release the prologue as a sort of demo when in between the release for the patreons and the final one with all bugs squashed:D

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

Whoa, got even negative rep just for asking how things were going. I guess this thread is some kind of lair for evil dudes.
Anyway Yummy, I quite understand your...high standards for your own game (you have to be proud of it, that's correct), but I think you exceeded it. I mean, you're not a big gaming company and such, so you have to take the time you need, but after one year and a half from the first announcement of the game (more or less) you're still stuck on chapter 1, out of 5. I know that you were working on it just on your free time for more tha a year, but...I don't know, maybe for this chapter it's time to face the fact that it's taking too much time. Obviously you're not taking money monthly so I'm not screaming "it's a scam!"...
But it's your own game. Do as you want. Still, don't act too stubborn 'cause it's not good.
And for the love of peace, this is not meant as an offensive critique, so I apologize if it sounds like that.

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

@MasterQ2: I agree, if I could go back with what I've learned in the past 18 months, things would be quite different. Made plenty of mistakes, and they led to things dragging out to an almost unbelievable level. Hell, if I could go back to April, I'd do things differently. That's all part of the amateur development process, I'm learning as I go.

For me, the real test will be Chapter 2. Can I apply everything I've learned, and remain disciplined enough to get Chapter 2 done in a reasonable timeframe (1-3 months). As I said on Patreon a long time ago, with the pledging method I use, there really is no need for other accountability mechanisms. If I don't put in the time and work, I don't ever get paid. If I can't get things running smoothly enough to finish chapters in a few months, I don't get paid often enough to go full time. Neither of those is acceptable. So, I will find a way to get these releases coming at a more reasonable rate, whether it be forming a team, or being smarter with features, or whatever.

Keep up the good work, even if it takes longer than other games, you are working alone on this and I personally think you are doing a great job with it :)

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

I'm surprised people even care about sound. I've muted every single RPG Maker game I've played after 5 minutes. The menu selection beeps and combat noises are so burned into my brain that I just can't tolerate them anymore. That little "kchkchkch" noise when you move to a different area..oh god make it stop. The stock noises are just so grating.

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

As someone thats worked with Sound before I can estimate that it would take about 4-5 days to set sounds for every scene, this is given the fact that you might have to get custom sounds made for some specific scenes (also since you're not a robot and might have to sleep or do something else in between), if you have a library for sounds effects ready instead I'd give it about 3-4 days and about a 1 week more or less for the Final Playthrough.

So yeah, a month of waiting is fine since the quality of the game will do more than make up for it, wish you a speedy recovery Yummy!

Music is perhaps one of the most powerful aspects of games and movies. Just look at Final Fantasy, what would it have been without the music? Or, find almost any motivational video and you'll find the music is usually just as important as the message. I care about the music.

As for sounds, what you're saying is just another reason why I want to get in there and change things. I'll still have some stock sounds, but I try to normalize them and bring them so they don't loudly go "kchkchkch" in your ear (btw, that is a perfect way to describe that sound, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I can tell you, when writing, it can be hard to come up with onomatopoeia words).

@Krystallize: Ooooo, a let's play on my game! I'll check it out.

@Azope: I wouldn't worry about artwork getting revamped again. I've settled on a style, been using that style for nearly 4-5 months now, and still love it. I doubt I'll be dramatically changing things enough to warrant another revamp like this.

@Keyen: I'll be honest, about 7-8 months ago, my serious goal was chapter 2 by June 30th... and we saw how that turned out. So... don't get too excited for chapter 2 by Christmas. I think it will be done by then, but what do I know?

I totally agree Yummy, I don't know if I could play games the same if it wasn't for the soundtracks.

As for the RPG maker sounds, I haven't been playing as long as some people here, (definitelly more that 2 years tho) but I honestly don't even notice them anymore.

He is not a big company, and that is the thing what affect the most on production speed. Even Blizzard need years to polish single game, and we talk here about single independent developer.

Also this chapter 1 in fact is not just the chapter 1 but also entire gameplay system behind entire game.

I guess 1,5 year is not long in terms of games developing if we want some decent quality. To be honest, there is tons of RPG makers games, but only few are good. I rather wait some longer and see a good game, than next one what I will shout down after 30 min of gameplay.

@YummyTiger
My advice is keep going your own pace. Do not try be in hurry.

Re: Aylia's Story - English H-Game Goodness!

Even when comparing to a single developer who works on their own game you must understand that some people have background, contacts or some hidden party to support in gamedev or coding or pretty much anything that can make their lives easier and smoother. It isn't always monetary either, it could be work space, software suggestions, voice acting, editing, scripting...

YT is still a hobbyist. This was never his 9 to 5. It is not fair to compare him to someone who can legitimately call game development their career and earns their keep in developing. Many successful solo developers take many years almost full time and still need the support of friends and family. Many successful solo devs also come from a background that could assist them in one part of the development be it coding or sound or art or designs.

There are exception but that is why we call them exceptions. It isn't the normal.
