Or that soldiers can recover from anything short of death by taking cover for a minute or so.

I believe the effect of taking cover and healing in the more recent Call of Duty games somewhat emulates taking a bullet to the plates and taking a breath to recover from just getting shot before heading out. One could also apply a tourniquet/quick clot in that time spent in cover. That could have been a neat game play mechanic.

The Spartans weren't the only ones to wear red to disguise blood, the British Redcoats did as well. However, I don't think the Spartans wore red tunics seeing as Greek vase art and statues are all naked. From my understand Greek soldiers went into battle wearing very very little. Just don't show that often in modern movies/video games as it would get an X rating.

Grenades in video games have never, ever yet come close to portraying how destructive they are in real life. I believe the kill radius is something like 10 meters, perhaps more, I can't remember. The wounding radius is something like 100 or higher. Claymores, to the front, have a killing radius of 50 meters, and wounding of much further. Even behind they can cause wounds up to 100 meters away.

The FMJ for a shotgun could replicate shotgun slugs perhaps? Something soldiers use often overseas alongside buckshot and... birdshot.

When you have a shield big enough to protect your body, who needs to weight themselves down in heavy armour?

That said, at least in Rome: Total War (which I trust for historical accuracy, they tend to do their research) the greek hoplites do wear some armour.

My latin teacher was a bit of a history buff when it came to greeks and romans and one of the things she hated most about 300 was the fact that they had no armor in the movie when they did in actual history. Also, the red tunic is a well know thing they did do, and about half the vases out there will show them wearing armor. It's just that the greeks liked to glorify naked guys.

Sounds not entirely unlike the original DoD (back when the entire game was brown and poorly lit so you couldn't see anything). I once managed to miss-throw a grenade and team kill all 8 other people on my team. Grenades in that were ridiculously strong.

and yes, the greeks also just drew everyone naked. there is a reason homosexuality was known as greek love.

I never saw it, but the movie "The 300 Spartans" supposedly portrayed that battle much better than 300 did. Th spartans in "300" were hawt though ^.^

Armors were expensive, so not everyone could afford one. Before true proffesional armies, soldiers were given little or no equipment (and/or training), so they had to buy their own.

But if we were talking about 300 (the film)... well, it was based upon a comic -not an historical film, right?

There were actually apparantly a fair bit of inaccuracies in the game apparantly. Mods started coming out from history buffs Like Rome: Total Realism, and Universalis Europa. At least that's how I think you spell it.

But I've been proven wrong on the Greek thing. Need to check my sources on that one. However, the movie '300' never did claim to be historically accurate, more just to tell a good story and be cool while doing it. The earlier 'The 300 Spartans' which inspired Frank Miller was indeed more accurate in its portrayal of the events, but you can only go so realistic with the special effects of the time.

You're not very familiar with how a phalanx works, are you?

Alright, granted. From what I can remember about Total Realism, many of the changes were just the power levels of the units, such as reducing the damage of cavalry but increasing their charge bonus. A few factions were renamed to more historically accurate names (Spain into Iberia), some factions were given more lands (the map was extended further into the middle east to properly show certainf azctions power) and some factions were removed because they were not a unified force. The closest thing to the kind of details we're talking here is that Total Realism removes bows from the roman armoury.

I'm not familair with Universalis Europa. And I did say generally :p

I may not be around after Monday, so I'm leaving this as a heads-up... in case anyone noticed I disappeared longer than usual.

[Edited to remove sentimentality.]

If I do come back... Well, then I'll just have to edit the middle of that message and we can go back to pretending I don't have a heart. That would be cool with me.
