Re: Games Discussion Thread

No customisation and no editor? The feck? That doesn't sound right at all.

I loved the customisation stuff in the series. I always wanted them to add a little bit more, not take it away. I made a fair few custom fictional worlds, my favourite being a large scenario map based on Kharak from the Homeworld series. It had all the historical clans, the gigantic desert to fight over being the first to cross successfully, custom units I stole from a different mod and all sorts. The mothership project was the final wonder required to win the game. And civ5 has taken this kinda stuff away?

The "praise (...) every other reviewer in the world is doing." had better be good. '_'

Also, yeah, Red Faction Guerilla was a load of fun. I said that a few months ago. It was kind of hilarious how "your character" invariably develops a strange hatred/destructive love of any interesting architecture throughout the course of the game. You'd be driving along, and suddenly skid the truck to a stop because you saw an "interesting" building or structure of to one side. I remember ploting that large bridge in the wasteland zones downfall for a long time. Things like driving one of those heavy missile tanks right up the stairs to the government plaza, and smashing it through the front door are of course awesome too. I think my favourite side missions have to be the defence missions. Or at least latter on when the enemy started coming at you with the more advanced weaponry, so that even the small arms fire would slowly shred and blow chunks out of buildings. I always liked to walk around the building afterwards and try to evaluate myself just how usable/trashed it was in a more real sense. (as opposed to the % rating you get)

Hadn't heard the song, tis fun too, though I'll actually say that the video is rather lame. Spends far to long killing civies and not enough time smashing things. All in one tiny area too. Also strangely bugged me that he never once used a vertical swing throughout the whole video.

Edit: Also, getting comically killed whilst doing the "cool guys don't look at explosions" thing, by taking a random fluke piece of office furniture to the back of the head as it came back down from orbit. Stuff like that. It may have made me fail the mission seconds before the mission complete screen would have showed, but I love it anyway.

There is still a mod option stuck right into the main menu, so at least Firaxis is still highly supportive of the mod teams out there. How easy it is this time around however, I don't know. I'm sure it won't be too long before some mods start popping up. Still, as I've never been a modder (my few attempts with Medieval II Total War were not entirely successful) I do hope that someone figures it out soon.

And yes the praise given to the game is good. The actual game presented is high quality. Like I've been saying over and over, the combat is great. Ranged units actually attack from a range, siege units are excellent against cities, and cities are tough little nuts to crack that defend themselves to make up for not being able to stack a shit load of units on top of them. The new hex grid system over the old square one works very well, especially with this new combat method.

The fact that all the leaders speak their own language in the diplomacy screen is rather neat, and the game does an excellent job of reminding you to make sure all your cities are working, and all your troops have orders.

Strategic resources are now finite making one really be careful with how they use them. Especially iron in the early game. (though the death of a unit using one of these resources gives it back to you thankfully)

So while the series has taken a few steps back in some categories, they've taken a good few steps forward in other categories.

Still, keep in mind those drawbacks I mentioned, because if your favorite part was the customization of the game, then this may not rub you the right way.

On another note, also got Dead Rising 2. I'll give my thoughts on the full game later on after playing it a bit more.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Minor little update when I got my Playstation magazine today. Apparently DA2 opens with Hawke and his mage sister fleeing Lothering, only to run into the very darkspawn they're trying to get away from. And as Shang Tsung says..."Fight."

inb4Fatality :p cause that sounds like such a setup for said sister to either snuff it/get captured.

Ain't that the truth.

Also, Bioware has officially announced the Dragon Age Ultimate edition.

PC, $50, Console $60, according to Gamestop.

Likely going to reserve it and see how the DLC is done with this. If it's codes, meh. Savings are nice, but I already have the core games. Don't need it. If it's on disc, might trade in for it, since that's more convenient for me. Only about a month wait, so that's not too bad. Let's hear it for Halloween presents *laughs*

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I dub thee Dragon Age: Dead Cow edition.

Because milking a dead cow is kinda like beating a dead horse.

Y'know, I used to like Dragon Age...

Then again, if you's just starting, it saves ya having to buy EVERYTHING again.

Or constantly milking your pocket for more coins.

Yes, I'm looking at you, FFOnline and your fuckton of expansions.

I don't think that's the case at all. I've read that the sister is one of Hawke's companions through the game.

I have no issue with this. I won't get it, but I have no issue with it. It's just like the Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition, or the Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition.

It's been awhile since the release of the game and most of the DLC, and now with Dragon Age 2 starting to show up on the horizon a complete package is being offered to those who may want to get into it who havn't before.

Still, I don't see how a release of a package can make you change your opinion on the core experience of the game.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

It's not this final package that killed it for me.

It was the new DLC every other week. And frankly, my opinion of the Fallout 3 DLC was that it ruined the game; I played GotY and thus had them all, and because I start with the quests already active and with beacons, I'm naturally drawn to them. Then, before I've even hit level 8 I've got my hands on equipment better than what normally appears in the game and proceed to walk through the rest of the game with no concerns of money, ammo, healing supplies etc.

I see. While I've not been impressed by much of Dragon Age's DLC with the exception of Awakenings (which is a true expansion rather than just simple DLC), I found Fallout 3's were actually quite good. Especially the one that extended the level cap and continued the game past the point of where the original ended.

Also, with Fallout 3 you didn't have to download them from the disk off the bat, so you can't really blame the DLC for ruining the game when you did it to yourself.

In Civ V news however, I have to correct an earlier statement of mine. There are autosaves in the game, however it doesn't autosave every turn and didn't let me know until I went searching around the load screen for them. However because it apparently autosaves in between two set in game years, which can be annoying as you can still end up with ten turns or more lost.

I'm also currently rather frustrated with the game's tendency to completely lock up. It's done it to me twice in the past hour, making me play the same damn ten turns over and over.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

For Civ 5, you can set how often the game autosaves in the interface options.

Dunno what's causing your lock ups though.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Thanks for the help, but these damn lock-ups are a pain in the ass.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

So, the next game is going to take things into a different direction. Apparently, it's going to be a horror shooter.

Or, you have someone like me without a gaming computer and thus who relies on consoles for games like this and doesn't have the means to hook up a router to a system that's some distance away from said computer (or just finds it a supreme pain in the ass...) and having all the content on one or two discs is nice. Still, Incubus has stated his reasons for why he doesn't like the DLC and the like, and since it's a different argument, I'm not going to press.

Although working with video and computer games for 5 years like I did, the Ultimate edition comes as no surprise to me really. I mean, we have Battle chests...GOTY editions...editions getting re-released with included expansions each time an expansion came out (I'm looking at you SIMS and NWN...) So yeah, I think it's kind of typical and for me, nice. And hey, I know I won't get back what I paid for them, but can always trade in my existing copies for the new one. Or just roll over my reservation if it's not what I want.

Or like Dawn of War 1. I purchased the Platinum edition to get me started, mostly as the rents were quite dubious it'd even work on my craptop at the time. It has, and now I'm contemplating Soulstorm for the 'full set' so to speak.

Who wants to bet that the beasties are an old by-product of good old Ultor? Remember the giant worms the doc set on you in Red Faction 1? Some of these look rather similar.

After reading up on the series on wikipedia (haven't played them unfortunately) this actually seems possible, what with all the nano-experimenting that's been going on in that series.
