Re: Games Discussion Thread
Despite what I said about games moving forward as an accepted story telling medium, they still play with a lot of tropes, and 60% of gamers are male (stats on homosexual and bisexual players I've yet to see), and with the increase in graphics capabilities, its easier to make a sexy character that people just want to look at.
That said, I'd love to see games that eschew this trope almost entirely, and not have to rely on a token jugs character. I remember when the game Draken: The Ancient's Gate came out for the PS2 years ago, and the protaganist was a female wearing pants and though she had a bustier style top her breasts were not overly impressive. I heard both males and females going "yes, pants and a realistic body type for a warrior." Even most males I talked to didn't mind playing that female character at all because they didn't feel weird for playing as an over sexualized bimbo.
Hell, even set characters that have used their large breasts and ramped up sexuality are taking a change. Take a gander at the new Lara Croft character art:
So, while the token jugs character is loosing its prominence, it'll still be around. Indeed the games that do use it may try and push the sexuality a bit further because they can. We'll see what happens.
does there always have to be a token jugs character?
