Re: (Nutaku) Milenium War Aigis (English Version)
It's funny how you bring up Fire Emblem of all things. It easily destroys any argument you have about games spoonfeeding you information.
Class changes? You can CC at level 10 instead of 20 in FE. Does the game tell you that doing so will cripple that unit's stats? Nope. Gee, sounds kinda like Aigis' 30CC vs. 50CC.
Which is on purpose. In the most recent Fire Emblem in NA (Fire Emblem Awakening, with Fates coming later this month), you are able to de-evolve those characters to retrain them. You have to do so with Frederick, who starts the game in an evolved form, but it's easy to see from his stats that he evolved at level 10 rather than 20.
If Nintendo gave you perfect evolved units, you'd use the crap out of them and stop using your lesser powered units. But by having your evolved units have such flaws, you can fix this by de-evolving and properly leveling them. And you WILL see the difference if you take one of your other units all the way to 20 and then evolve them. The simple difference in stats will make it abundantly clear how crap Frederick is.
And there's an easy way Aigis could even use the same kind of example. Let's say they give you a unit that's pre-evolved from level 30. A 30/1. They could use timing for such a thing to clue you in on several things; 1) That they expect you to start using evolved units either now or soon; 2) That evolving units is a thing; and 3) That there's a big difference between a unit that's evolved at 30 and one that you evolve at 50. And they could even make it so that this unit isn't wasted.
Using the above, let's say they give you a 30/1 Katie. This would be your second Katie in the game, currently evolved, so she has the improved CC skill. You get her and see she's not very good, so you 50cc the one you got from Katie's Strategy Missions. Now you have an extra, worthless cc'd Katie and one worthwhile cc'd Katie. Just combine them for a guaranteed 2/5 skill and -1 UC on your worthwhile Katie. There; the game taught you about CC and you got something worthwhile out of the experience. This would also aid in a problem we have in Aigis; That there's only one Katie available in the NA version from Nutaku. Could also use Cloris for this example. Give us a worthless cc'd one to teach us about evolving, that we can use to strengthen the actual character we got from elsewhere.
I'll admit the need for silvers isn't elaborated on, but that's easy enough to recover from and it's an early mistake you ought to get out of the way.
Still, it shouldn't have happened in the first place. It SUCKS when you find out you screwed up so badly and basically have to start over from scratch.
Now, your complaints about how you were consistently underleveled and unprepared for gateway levels like Castle Retake? That's not a valid complaint. Like in Fire Emblem, it's very easy to make the mistake of not leveling the right units or leveling all the wrong ones, only to get massively screwed over down the line when your super-invincible paladin gets offscreened by the plot or whatever. FE doesn't tell you those things either, so expecting Aigis to tell you what units to CC is silly.
More recent Fire Emblems have eschewed such things by making every unit you get completely viable. Sure, some are better than others (I'm looking at you, Donny), but everybody's good in Awakening. Maybe not great, but good. And while I did complain that the jump in difficulty in Castle Retake is insanely high, my continued inability to beat it was blamed on my own incompetence and inability to adjust to the new enemy's tactics. Not to mention that Lich was plain nasty if you're unprepared for it. On that note; that Gold Rush mission for Death and the Holy Women? Two Liches at once? That's just dirty, Nutaku. Strangely, those two were a lot easier to face than Castle Retake's one.
I could go on and on, but the simple fact is, you didn't bother to research and insist on all your knowledge coming from the game only, then blaming the game itself for doing something you could've easily avoided with some research and/or common sense.
Then there's the fact that you blew $100 out of a $10000 income speaks volumes about your thought process.
I shouldn't have to research a game's basic mechanics. The game should be capable of teaching me those on it's own. If a game cannot teach me about it's own mechanics through play, then it isn't a game worth my time. I have hundreds of games all vying for my time and why I spent so much time and money on Aigis is beyond me. I feel now like I wasted both, especially now that I know that Aigis' scenes for the many women of the game are posted elsewhere for me to see and read.
Keep in mind that I'm 31. I was raised on the NES, a system well known for, amongst many things, it's ability to teach players through gameplay alone. You didn't need to sit down and read the manual for Super Mario Bros, because it was pretty simple. It was a game about jumping over pits and running to the right. It's most high-tech technique was holding down the B button allowed you to run. Otherwise, d-pad moves you, A jumps, B shoots when you have a fire flower, and start pauses the game. It didn't need to hold your hand because it was so simple that you could only blame yourself if you couldn't keep up.
As games evolved, the need for tutorials became necessary as games got both deeper and more complex. For how complex Aigis is with it's many mechanics, there is no excuse not to mention so many important mechanics in the tutorial. Or not having multiple tutorials, to teach people how to use mechanics as they become relevant.
And if you need context for why I blew $300 on Aigis, I'm mentally handicapped, okay? I have a nasty learning disability, so please get off my tits about it. I'm a bit sensitive about my disability, so if you can please not poke fun at it, I'd appreciate that.
