This time I watched a nice older movie, well not that old from 2003, it's called 'zatoichi: the blind swordsman' , sadly I couldn't find a subbed or dubbed version on the internet so if you can't speak japanese you will miss out on some 'minor' things going on in the movie...

...that already brings me to why I like that movie so much, even without understanding the language, the movie tells it's story by sound effects and pictures + good editing skills alone, which is already quite impressive, add to that interesting setups and lots of steady cam, cut's that let you see the same room/scene/encounter from totally different angles/character perspectives and lots and lots of long steady shots, it's definetly a movie I always enjoy watching even for the fifth time, hehe :eek:!

Yes I am a big fan of steady camera shots that just zoom in and out and don't move that much at all...

But after all, this is a sword fighting movie, so beside all the comedy and interesting edits and shots, be prepared for some gore, it's definetly not the main theme of the movie, but it's in there.

Oh, I've seen that movie! I remember thinking it was a bit boring, but then I was barely a teenager at the time.

Isn't it about a blind swordsman... who's a massager or something? I remember a scene where he piles up firewood just by throwing logs and hitting perfectly.

I mean, I could be way wrong.

I think there is a scene like that, yeah the movie gets kinda ridiculous when it comes to what the different characters are capable of doing, but I love the pace and shots of the movie so much, that's why I rewatched it about 5 times...I happened to see it for the first time when I was, hmmm, I believe 17 myself.

The more I recall, the more I remember the kinda ridiculous stuff, and actually, I think I enjoyed it more as it went on.

I wasn't as used to the over-the-top-ness of some of Eastern cinema (chiefly Ronin or Wuxia themed movies from Japan and China respectively), or at least how casual that over-the-top-ness could be, because I wasn't familiar with the folkloric ideas surrounding warriors and martial arts, I was more grounded in western tropes were seemingly superhuman abilities usually have to be explained in detail, and so I was a bit frustrated. The same goes for Sneaking Tiger Hidden Dragon (admittedly partially western), Hero, Red Cliff, that sort of thing.

Now that I'm a bit more used to the tropes used there, I think I'd be more receptive.

Sidenote: I wonder if there are certain western tropes that is considered weird or off-putting to various eastern audiences. I know some american cinema tropes that put me a bit off as a non-American, but that's not quite the same.

Just got back from Hyena Road, and I actually really enjoyed it. As a film, there were some problems with it. Fairly predictable ending, and a good amount of scenes that felt unnecessary, and the plot itself didn't really kick off until nearly halfway in.

However, as a little slice of life movie, it did wonderfully. All those unnecessary scenes filled out little bits of what these characters did in Afghanistan, how they acted, what life could be like. They were amusing mostly, a stark contrast to the horrors and adrenaline of combat that actually hit the mark in my opinion.

And the firefights were well shot. Since the movie follows a sniper detachment throughout, there were usually only four soldiers in each fight sequence, so nothing was epic and huge. Rather it was small, and intense, and everything felt accurate even if everything wasn't 100% accurate. The gore was vicious and violent, but not so over the top that it was distracting to what was happening elsewhere.

All in all, if you like a good war movie, that gives a little view into what the average soldier's life could be like (even if they did end up in an extraordinary situation) I'd highly recommend Hyena Road. If your looking for the next big award winner like Platoon that deeply inspects the psyche of soldiers, you may want to pass.

Also, loved the music. Music was fucking awesome.

Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman is a pretty awesome flick--I've watched it more than a few times. And yes, that's the one where the eponymous protagonist chops firewood and tosses it perfectly onto the pile... but that's probably the least of his superhuman feats during the picture. The effects are a little dated but so exceptionally used that you really don't mind suspending your disbelief.

I know I'm a little late for the B-movie discussion but it doesn't get much more B than Night of the Comet.

Also Cherry 2000 is a nice post-apoc cult classic that I like to recommend to pretty much anyone who will listen.

Ice Spiders(2007), watched it yesterday...
Arachnid(2001) have to rewatch it I watched it years ago...(I would like to compare arachnid to the movie 'congo', only difference congo had some okay acting + campbell starred in it)

Both movies have no real story nor acting, but what they have is giant scary looking spiders and that always does it for me, I am afraid of giant maneating spiders :eek:...ruuuuuuuuuuuuun!!!

I remember watching Night of the Comet on USA *UP* All Night with Rhonda (You have to emphasize the 'up' to say it like her, hehehe.) Loved her so much better than Gilbert Gottfried. Such a hokey movie but I do love it.

And carrying on, anybody gone to see Crimson Peak yet? CB and I are making plans to go, but waiting on all the Hiddlestoners to get it out of their system because they're only going for costume porn and his naked ass. That, and I need money for theater tickets and I haven't got any at the moment.

and 'Debug' today, though I skipped through alot of the stuff, since the acting bored me I must say the jelly-tentacle monster of 'The Sand' was quite innovative and made me keep watching the movie to the end...sadly they had to go all out glowing space tentacle at the end of the movie, that didn't feel right to me, they did a great job with introducing the monster at the start, but then it felt like as if they were forced to finish the movie quickly and all that nice stuff introduced at the start of the movie ended up in a rushed and pieced together crappy ending... ;)

...It did kinda remind me of the horror movie

so much suspense built at the start and the middle of the movie and then a weak ending comes along not worth the first 50 minutes of the movie... :(

Almost forgot, I watched a nice sci-fi flick lately, called 'Hunter Prey' , btw. don't watch the trailer or you will reveal one of the coolest twists the movie has to offer...

And well... fuck 'em. Apologies for the links, don't take them too seriously, they're just for illustration. And a wonderfull excuse for the rest of my post.

Personally I never really got into the first six movies, 3-6 are rather good but didn't really hit home for me or something and 1-3 are rather atrocious in my opinion.

I did fall very very in love with the extended universe though, so now with the exclusion of Lucas, the return of practical special effects, Ford, Fisher, and everyone's favorite J̶o̶k̶e̶r̶ Jedi Knight Hamill also; CHEWBACCA LIVES!
I am pretty fucking excited for a new generation of Jedi to hit the silver screen.

p.s. Seriously, what the FUCK is the goddamn strike-through command? I tried like 20 different ones guys.

As of Disney's acquisition of Lucas Arts, 99% of EU is no longer canon.

Did the EU explain new stormtroopers, because from what I remember, they were all clones? And even if the EU was canon to date, it's outside the regular media, so fans shouldn't be expected to just know it all. You don't bring something from the EU into the MU without a full explanation accompanying it.

It's of questionable canon but I do know that in Battlefront II there was actually a clone rebellion that the 501st had to squash, which led to the Emperor using several different clone templates for the Stormtrooper clones and/or relying more and more on full-bred soldier recruits from recruitment.

Even if you go strictly by the movies, it's obvious that the Stormtroopers are no longer Fett clones by that point, since the original trilogy movies feature stormtroopers with varing voices and accents.

And that's not something they overlooked either; Boba Fett had his voice intentionally redubbed to fit with the Fett-clone story.
