What's new

RPG RPG Maker [Sweetsprite] Forest of the Abyss 2 (RJ217876)

I interacted with the goddess statue in the maze forest and got the quest with golden icon about 90 challenges something, where do I go to start on this quest?

Hi, I've been lurking this thread for a while and I can't help wondering if there's any new news about the translation. I want to buy the game but not being able to understand the things going on has been a deal breaker.

IIRC the translator is waiting for the finished version (because in every update all translation will be reverted to the japanese), correct me if i'm wrong...

OK, I know what I'm doing next month...
Super Mario Maker 2!

OK, I'll be serious now, I'll start doing a Version 1 patch release. Version 1 will restore all strings to the originals from the RTP.
Version 2 will replace the opening crawl with one in English, using best guess logic.
The Version 3 releases will replace the gallery versions of endings with English ones.

One thing I will NOT change currently is where Sweetsprite used text on a transparent image overlay. These edits will be able to be applied as a patch to a still encrypted version of the game, meaning I cannot replace any graphics or audio. That is a hard and fast rule.
Regarding the opening crawl, you can use a program called Capture2Text to get the text, more or less accurately. It should be able to recognise most of the characters and has a clipboard function, so you can just use that to put the text it into your translator. It's free, so check it out if you want to get a decent understanding of the text. Won't capture all characters perfectly and can confuse some, but it should be enough to help you understand it.

On the previous page is a loose schedule for the translation release, which is likely beingw orked on when possible. version 1 *should* be out this month, but obviously these things can be difficult, especially if sweetsprite suddenly puts out another patch of fixes or minor changes.

I already have a way to copy the opening crawl, and will be removing the original text outright, due to the fact a lot of the flow is lost in translation.

I think he meant about how this thread has been seemingly abandoned for weeks.

Translations take time, especially if the script structure is as convoluted as Valentine made it out to be. Just relax and have faith, we'll get updated when there's something worth posting about.

yeah. though admittedly i would settle for just the bad endings, i think it's great the effort is being put in to translate this entire game.

I see your point, but remember that this is a game that someone made. They put effort into the story as well as the bad endings. Even if it is a hentai game, I've enjoyed games significantly more where I understood all the dialogue and story as opposed to just seeing what they're saying in a game over CG

Something I will state...
The hard part is that Sweetsprite codes in a very very lossy way.
Easy way to do a item pick-up string...
Use the game's own item handling routines and undoubtedly already done '... has picked up... ' string.
Sweetsprite's way...
MANUALLY write 'Arle has picked up some curry ingredients!'
This triples or worse the workload for one map.

Add to that having a life, and well...
No wonder this never got a translation earlier.

no doubt. i'll actually give the whole thing a try if the full thing gets translated. as far as bruteforcing my way through games go, well i did it with one of sweetsprite's other games. that carnival one. was a pain in the pass but this would be on a much larger scale. seriously though if anyone's played it, that game literally requires you to guess everything PERFECTLY to get one of the endings. it sucked.

Eurgh, I know. Sweetsprite's tribute to Puyo Puyon was a nightmare for probably a lot of us.

Do not bump this thread with the same question again.
Any updates on the translation of the game so far ? It's been awhile without any news . Or it will never see a light ?

I sort of mentioned this in the translation thread, but what about a partial that only translates the hentai scenes? I'm not familiar with how the scene script vs the rest of the game's script is, but it seems like it would be a whole lot less work while still giving people the meat of the content. After all, it's a hentai game, we play it for the hentai. Story can be nice (MGQ comes to mind in particular), but really it's not as important as the H-content.
