Re: Hate Thread
On the weeaboo thing, I'll add that I dislike the term being misused. people can go ahead and call someone an anifag or whatever other stupid insult some might think of, but shouldn't assume just because someone mentions anything Japanese or even expresses a strong like for something from Japan, that they are a weeaboo. It's like calling everyone that owns a play-station, Japanese bike/car, or any of the other millions of Japanese electronics that nearly every home is full of a weeaboo. For the annoying ones that deserve the name, paddle them plenty.
On the subtitle/dub thing, you just need to know which ones are "safe". There are certainly plenty of decent and good ones. But with no elitism intended, the large majority of dubs, honestly are frequently poorly done. Some are just god awful. My real issue though isn't actually with dubs at all, but more the western release versions that they are made for. It's the western publishers incessant insistence on making bizarre changes to the script and content of the anime that I hate. I don't know much Japanese myself, but even I know that when I hear a character exclaim "Oni chan!" and jump away from some zombies in fear, that the subtitles reading "Holy shit!" are plain wrong.
Thing's like that in certain episodes of pokemon, they have characters refering to riceballs as doughnuts, or edit in a badly drawn sandwich over the top of them in another, yet change nothing in other episodes, is just ridiculous. As if the viewers would be so damaged over the concept of rice shaped in a ball that it had to be censored.
That in the US version of Card Captors, one character lost 60% of his screen time in the second half of the series, because he was gay. And that another side character was virtually cut altogether because she didn't contribute to the action scenes.
Or in One Piece where all firearms were replaced with super soakers, poison darts changed to poison sucker dart, 90% of blood was edited out, the word wine was censored as "grape juice", a major death scene was skipped and shrugged off saying that the person was merely "taken way", and an entire plot arc was removed altogether for the sole purpose of getting to a character sooner who had been selling lots of merchandise.
This is why dub or sub, I rarely buy DVDs. Simply because western publishers are meddling ass hats that can't be trusted. Fan subs are frequently the only way to actually watch something without wondering what the US executives feel you don't want to see.
