I played a bunch of the winners (demos or full versions), and the ones that stood out to me positively were

• Crimsion Flash Aries: Holy fucking shit this game looks and plays awesomely. It's not a button-mash brawler though (unless you play on the easiest difficulty), that's a quick way to get your ass handed to you even on Normal.
• Runway Girl and Me: I also played 1Room for a bit to compare, and its premise is 99% the same but the gameplay gives you more choices and you actually have to build up a relationship which makes it closer to Imouto Life Monochrome.
• SEQUEL kludge: Anyone who enjoys actually playing JRPG games for the gameplay and hasn't tried the SEQUEL series is seriously missing out. Easily one of the best in the genre.
• Yes My Lord: I enjoyed it enough to make a thread for it. The only unfortunate thing is it's story-driven but also doesn't have an a translation so uh do your reps.
• Hypnosis App: Kinda like an indie Miconisoni game. Does its premise of training a hypnotized bitch pretty well, and the L2D? 3D? is good.

Neutral:

• Chevalier Historie: It's PICOPICOSOFT, can't go wrong with soft fluffy MCs with big tits if you're here for the H content. The gameplay is very lacking though, I stomped through what's available of the demon lord castle in the demo pretty easily. Also, what kind of action game doesn't implement 8-direction movement??
• Noelle Will Give Her All: The pixel animations look really good, but the gameplay is a slog. Get a full save or play a Hurricane Dot Com or TissuBox game.

Negative:

• Get Violated By EVERY Girl You Encounter RPG ~MAX Volume!~: Frankly I closed the game the moment it started up on the default tiny-ass RPGmaker resolution. So much voice and art wasted on it being RPGmaker when it could have just used a VN engine.

I recognize that the GOTYs are all fairly good at least but they're all also very bulky in content so I didn't try them yet. Succubus Academia just released its official english version though so there's that.

A lot of the picks don't surprise me too much, especially the GOTY picks. Though I would almost argue that the Engrossing Game choices could probably take some of the slots in GOTY.

I gotta same, some of the categories are interesting. I'm not really sure I understand what "surprising" is in this context. Like surprise hits or something? I would've also expected a category like best gameplay, or best h-scenes or best new developer or something like that. Do the winners get anything, by the way? It doesn't look like the items got discounted.

I only learnt about this after the results were out so not sure if they were given anything. I assume it's just more exposure since I wouldn't have known about or tried a lot of these if I hadn't seen it. There are a few sub-10k sale games mixed into the awardees that could possibly get a boost from it.

"Surprising" is probably the catch-all category, in that anything that caught the voter's eye and surprised them can work, like the game mechanics, the premise/presentation, or even the story which I guess somehow doesn't overlap with Excellent Story. The description given on the page:

Well, there some work that I really wouldn't even want to try in them as well as the opossite.
That poll is usually a good way to know the popular / trending circle or genre / fetish of the moment.
